This Kickstarter project is veiled in secrecy. Why? Well, because the maps I've created are intended to be part of a tournament at this year's Gen Con in which players sit down to play on a map they haven't seen before. If I reveal the contents, it spoils the fun for those players...
So, instead I'm giving you a glimpse of one part of the project: a new starship that is featured on the maps. The hull of this ship shows up on one poster, while the plan of the ship's lower deck is featured on another. A bonus set of terrain cards included with that poster will reveal the upper deck and complete the vessel.
Here's what I can tell you about these new poster maps:
• They are very clearly science fiction maps.
• They are double-sided, full color, and measure 22 by 34 inches.
• They feature a 1-inch grid, and fine colored lines to indicate different terrain types.
• They depict an interior location.
• The ship is parked somewhere, not floating in space.
• The ship is modular and expandable.
• The maps are also modular and expandable, so they can fit together in many possible configurations.
• The maps are similarly compatible with another map I've illustrated within the last decade.
• The sketches for three of these maps have never been revealed publicly, but they've been under development for *years*.
If we can raise $3500 (to fund the print run, cover cards, bonus terrain cards, packaging, shipping, and related expenses), the first of these Poster Maps of Mystery will see print and backers can have their copies shipped to them by the end of August (or pick them up in person at the convention).
If we manage to double that amount, raising $7000 before the end of the funding period, BOTH Poster Maps of Mystery will be printed! These Mystery posters function seamlessly together to create a super-massive sci-fi location, so getting them both in print together would be fantastic.
And if we somehow manage to *triple* the initial funding goal, I've got plans for even more cool projects that we can get into print and add to the list of potential rewards. These may include a new cross-genre Forsaken Lands poster, more terrain cards, or reprints of existing products that are nearly out of print!
With any reward package of $14 or higher, you will get to pick from the new products funded by this Kickstarter drive, and/or from any in-stock individual poster map or terrain card set listed in my map store at http://www.mapsofmastery.com/store.html
The maps will be revealed to all backers the week of August 20. You will get to see both sides of each new poster before picking your rewards, and you'll be free to choose from my other existing products if you prefer.
Your shipping is free. Even international orders will be shipped at no additional charge. That said, if backers from other countries would like to add $10 to their pledge as a courtesy to help offset the extra expense on my end, it would be appreciated.
The sooner we can pass the funding goal, the sooner I can get these new posters sent off to the printer. Time is limited, so I invite you to consider pledging right away, and tell all of your friends about the project. Word-of-mouth is the best tool we have to lift the veil of secrecy and get these maps into print.
No. The ticketed events at Gen Con that use these maps will supply you with a copy. (We're going to try to make enough copies of the maps available to the tournament organizers even if the project doesn't fund.) However, the quality of those copies will be higher, and there will be more options available to the organizers, if you help us get the project funded.
Yes. The front and back of these posters fit together with one another, so if you have two copies you can put the front and back together side-by-side to create an epic-scale skirmish location.
It's impossible to judge the quality of the maps without seeing them. How do I know if I'll like them?
The artwork on these maps is consistent with the body of sci-fi cartography I've developed over the last 12 years, particularly with the official maps for the Star Wars Miniatures game and my line of self-published posters. My most recent project is still highlighted on the front page of my website, where you can review my map galleries before pledging: http://www.mapsofmastery.com
If the funding goal ($3500) is met, one double-sided poster (2 maps) will be printed. If we double that goal ($7000), two posters will be printed (4 maps, all of which fit together to make a super-massive sci-fi location).
If we somehow manage to triple the goal, another poster could be produced as well, but I'm going to wait and see if that seems likely before making any concrete announcements on that one.
Yes. Backers who stop by my booth in the Gen Con exhibit hall (booth 2022) will be able to pick up their rewards at the show. (The name on your Gen Con badge will need to match the info you provide me through Kickstarter at the end of the funding period.) However, the new posters will not be revealed in the booth until their associated tournament events begin, to protect the secrecy for those players.
After I get home from the convention, I will begin the task of shipping out any rewards that were not picked up in person.
Yes, but you'll need to contact me through Kickstarter after the funding period is complete to authorize your friend to pick up your rewards, and I'll need to know his or her name to verify the identity with their Gen Con name badge.
The third reward option will be a set of cavern terrain cards appropriate for any genre of game. The goal to get it printed along with the posters is now an even $10K. If we pass that threshold with this Kickstarter, the new terrain card set will be available for backers to choose when selecting their rewards.
