The gyroscope is a mysterious object. By just spinning a disk it can balance serenely on a pinhead defying our perception of gravity. I love the way it can surprise school kids and scientists alike and leave them wondering how it's possible.
Gyroscopes are used in all sorts of things from spacecraft navigation to mobile phones, but many people know them as a plastic toy for kids.
We believe they deserve better than that. After months of prototyping we have created the perfect gyroscope, a beautiful sculpture and built to last a lifetime. It's an object that now truly reflects the significance of the underlying science.
Machined from aircraft grade aluminum and solid brass, we have achieved an unmatched level of quality and surface finish.
Each gyroscope is finished by hand, leaving it with a brushed aluminium look that subtly varies from piece to piece. This finish is called Manuka Raw.
For those who prefer a more uniform look, the rest of the Manuka line will be anodized* giving them a consistent and beautiful finish.
We have six colours available including an exclusive Kickstarter Green that won't ever be available anywhere else.
Every gyroscope comes with a Kevlar (super strong) pull string and ergonomic machined aluminium pull handle. This allows you to spin the gyroscope up to a really high speed which is important for some tricks. The slot in the handle allows you to neatly wrap and stow the string.
We have also produced an aluminium display stand that reflects the beauty and precision of the gyroscope. The stand is an optional extra.
The display stand comes with a notch in the top that allows you to perform tricks with the gyroscope.
Introducing the new Super-Stand!
Thanks to backer feedback, we designed the Super-Stand. The new display stand has a precision machined slot to neatly stow the pull handle and "Made in London" laser engraved on the base. You can also customise the colour of the stand and pull handle. To get the Super-Stand just pledge for the Showcase-Plus reward or above.
Bespoke engraving is also available with the Manuka Engraved reward. The Manuka Collector reward (limited to 50 units) also includes a unique engraved serial number (eg. limited edition:15/50).
We take huge pride in quality, and will not deliver anything but the best.
We have an excellent team ready to start work if the campaign is successful. You can expect regular and honest updates from us. If there's good news we'll tell you; if we are having tough times we'll also let you know.
We really hope you back us and look forward to sending you a beautiful hand crafted gyroscope that will last a lifetime.
For those that want to know a bit more about how our gyroscope works we have made this short video
* Anodizing is the application of a coloured oxide film coating to aluminium. This allows us to add really vivid and striking colours to the gyroscope frame.
US, EU, EEA and CANADIAN SHIPPING IS INCLUDED IN ALL OUR REWARDS. FOR ALL OTHER TERRITORIES ADD $15 TO YOUR PLEDGE.
After the campaign ends you will receive a survey asking you for your colour and engraving choices. You don't need to specify these before then.
We are blown away with the popularity of our little project. It's fantastic! We are looking into adding a night shift to accommodate all these extra orders. Please read the FAQ for more info on batches.
PLEASE READ THE FAQ BEFORE SENDING US A MESSAGE. THANKS!
Risks and challenges
We have an excellent team assembled here but nevertheless problems do arise with order fulfilment. We are realistic and know that whatever you do, something unexpected is going to happen. We have allowed ourselves plenty of margin to deliver these orders and are confident we can deliver within the estimated delivery timeframe. Items that say "Guaranteed by Christmas" are guaranteed - ie if you don't receive them before that date we will give you all your money back.
We have already prototyped the design and it works, so that is a major obstacle overcome. We also have a very experienced team and Glenn and Chris between them have a huge amount of production experience.
The biggest challenge as we see it lies in scaling up production. In order to be able to offer these high precision items at a reasonable cost, we have to be running fairly large volumes with low wastage. So far we have only estimated how long it will take to produce each gyro when the line is running at full speed.
In terms of fulfilment and postage, Glenn runs an online retail company and so has all the experience and resources to ship internationally without a hitch.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The gyroscopes will be dispatched in backer order - so, the earlier you ordered the gyroscope, the earlier you will receive it. Use this guide to figure our your ESTIMATED dispatch date. New backers should expect to receive the gyroscope by June 2014.

No. If you change or upgrade rewards you won't loose your place in the queue. Your backer number remains the same as this number determines when you get the reward.
You should ignore the estimated delivery date listed under each reward. We have tried to change this but it is locked by Kickstarter. Check out the "Estimated Dispatch Dates" FAQ for a better idea of your shipping date.
After the campaign ends, we will send you a survey asking how you want your gyroscope personalised. Depending on your exact pledge, you'll have the option to choose from a selection of colours, engraving text and fonts. We will also ask for your delivery address.
Yes. If you want (for example) two Manuka Colour rewards then you just need to increase your pledge* from $55 to $110. If you need to add international shipping you only need add it once per order. After the campaign ends we will send you a survey so you can specify exactly what you want on each gyroscope you order.
* to increase your pledge, first select the pledge that most closely matches the reward you want and then on the next page you will have the option to adjust the pledge amount.
We have checked and are able to offer free shipping to the EU, USA, EEA and Canada. We just can't guarantee that items sent outside of the EU and USA won't be subject to local taxes as this is sometimes subject to the vagaries of the particular customs official on duty!
The Raw gyro is our most cut down, bare bones gyro. We wanted to get this amazing piece of engineering art to you at the lowest possible price so we worked super hard to take out all the frills.
Making the stand is a lot of extra work so we regret that we can't include it in this reward option even if you pledge an extra $10. If you pledge for the reward with the stand you will still have the option of choosing the raw finish on the gyro when you fill in the survey after the campaign ends.
This also applies to early-bird pledges. There was never an early bird pledge which included the stand and the only way to get a stand is to select a pledge level which includes it.
When we started out, this gyroscope was a small project that we could neatly fit around other stuff in the factory. Now that we have smashed our target things have changed a little. Here's how: We normally manufacture very high value items for the aircraft industry and super high precision scientific market. These items are expensive and come with a correspondingly high margin. We wanted to get this gyroscope to you at a really great price, so we massively reduced our normal margin. Now that we are having to turn down high margin business to manufacture all these gyros, we need to make sure we still have enough cash to pay our skilled staff and all our bills. So, we are not making more money as a result of this, just making sure that we retain our current income. Hope that makes sense!
Now that you've smashed your delivery target can you still deliver the high quality product you've promised?
Yes! But it will take us a bit longer. There are no shortcuts here!
We are currently producing parts for about 20 gyroscopes per day. It's a slow process to get a really high quality product. If you do the math, 4000 gyroscopes takes us up up to August next year! However, we have now confirmed we are taking on an extra staff member - you have created an extra job! Well done! In addition we are also discussing night shifts with our team which would speed things up immensely. Below is our current "best-guess" for delivery timeframes without having a night shift - i.e. things should hopefully improve. What we do know is that we will be keeping you updated regularly!
Batch#1: 500 units for Christmas delivery. We have already started slowly and carefully producing this batch and estimate they will be ready within 8 weeks ready for shipment in late November. The factory has other commitments to meet before Christmas so after this batch is complete, production will resume again in January. As soon as the first complete gyro comes off the line we will post a photo.
Batch#2: 1000 units for dispatch in late February: This is when production ramps up. We will be using more staff and dedicating more machines to the job. Production on this batch will start as soon as the factory resumes work in the new year and should take 8-10 weeks of full time work. We estimate that the gyroscopes will dispatch in mid to late February.
Batch #3: 1500 units for dispatch in late April: Backers who's backer number is less than 2500 should expect to have their gyro by late April.
Batch #4: 1500 units for dispatch in late June: Backers who's backer number is less than 4000 should expect to have their gyro by late June.
Remember...this might seem like a long time but there really are no shortcuts to getting a super high quality product to you. It takes time and a lot of love. We hope you can understand.
Yes you can and you will still get your gift by Christmas. Click on the "Manage my pledge" button in the top right of this page. Add $10 to your current pledge but don't change rewards.
Yes. We are including the Super-Stand for free for all collectors unless you tell us you want the regular stand. Now isn't that super!?
