When we set out to design and develop a clip, we wanted something that was simple, functional, had character and looked good in any setting. Searching the market for such a clip that was versatile, and didn't damage any surface that it was attached to. We were not satisfied with what we found.
We went back to drawing board, and after months of prototyping, testing different designs, we developed a modern contemporary clip, The GRIPSTAR.
We wanted the Gripstar to have character, we played around with the idea of aluminium, brass, plastics but in the end, we chose to go back to nature and selected Wood. For us, wood combines beauty, elegance and texture which adds to the individuality of each peice being hand crafted. You choices are:
The king of woods. Beautiful with soft tones with a grain structure that enhances the Gripstar. Due to the nature of oak, the Gripstar can be used inside as well as outside and will last a long time.
A deep rich, warm red hardwood that has the same durability and versatility as oak. The Meranti Gripstar can be used inside as well as outside and will last a long time. It blunts sharp tools like no bodies business, but we still love it.
- The Gripstar can grip objects up to 6mm thick. It can grip paper, a pack of paper, cloths, cables ... this is the just start.
- Doesn't damage or leave marks.
- No drilling, no nails, just stick the Gripstar to the wall, and twist to remove.
- No cork board or whiteboard required.
- Attach to multiple surfaces for example, wood, brick, glass, ceramic, metal, wallpaper and painted surfaces, and doesn't leave a mark.
- The Gripstar and adhesive can hold up to 1.5kg of weight.
- Its durable and reusable, both inside and outside.
- Dimensions: 25mm (W) x 60mm (H) x 30mm (D) or in inchs, 1" (W) x 2.35" (H) x 1.2" (D).
- As every Gripstar is hand crafted, these dimensions may vary very slightly, no more than +/- 2mm or 0.07". All this means is that each Gripstar is unique.
After extensive testing with different types of adhesives such as suction cup tape, velcro, double sided tape and various other products, we found that double sided removable adhesive strips delivered the best results in holding capacity of up to 1.5 Kg (3.3 lbs) . In addition our tests have shown that the strips can be used on multiple surfaces and be be reused a number of times before changing is required.
Please note that repositioning of the Gripstar using the same adhesive strip may reduce its holding capacity. Each pledge Gripstar comes with a spare double sided removable adhesive strip. These strips can also be purchased from any supermarket or hardware stores.
We handed out a serious of Gripstar's to our friends and family, this is how they used their Gripstars.
We have found several applications for The Gripstar in both domestic and commercial environment.
We were delighted to see that our friends and family had found so many different uses for the Gripstars.
We next took the Gripstars to a busy commercial environment for example our local Coffee Shop. We gave them 2 Gripstars and set them a challenge, "What would you use the Gripstars for". We went back the next day, and these are the photos they took:
They were amazed that The Gripstar was so versatile and could still hold a considerable about of weight after re-positioning the Gripstar.
How would you use your Gripstar?
By backing this project, your helping to support local businesses. Every step of the this project is local. No off shore sourcing. We pride ourselves of quality of work and the ability to bring back local manufacturing.
We have invested a lot of time and money to get to this point and look forward to working with the Kickstarter community to introduce the Gripstars to the market. From experience, we have found that having a working prototype is not enough. In order to accurately calculate manufacturing time, we have carried out a production run of 50 Gripstars and planned accordingly. Our timeline is as follows:
- Design & development - Completed
- Testing - Completed
- Production run of 50 Gripstars - Completed
- Kickstarter Campaign begins - 4/11/2013
- Kickstarter Campign ends - 19/12/2013
- Setup for production - 18/12/2013
- Production begins - 2/01/2014
- Backers receive their pledges - April 2014
How will the funds be used?
The funds raised will be utilized for the manufacturing of the Gripstars, tooling. The past 4 months have been filled with designing the Gripstars, materials testing, prototyping and building relationships with key manufacturers. With your help, we can make Gripstars a reality.
It is our responsibility as designers and manufacturers to think harder, reduce waste and eradicate the use of harmful chemicals from everything we do. We have worked hard to use materials which are recyclable and can be traced to their source. What's just as important is that our products can last a lifetime so you can carry them with you where ever you go.
We still have a lot to learn and hope that by being transparent about the choices we make we can collectively improve for the better.
Risks and challenges
Every project has it's challenges. As we have our own equipment, we are able to do 100% of the work in house and handle issues that arise during production, manufacturing instantly. This allows us to keep prices down and have control over the processes involved.
Our biggest challenge is delivering on schedule. We've found that having a working prototype is not enough. In order to accurately calculate manufacturing time, a production run is needed. We've done this and planned accordingly.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
