Hello, my name is Mankin Chan and this is my first custom playing cards project. The Cultura Playing Cards deck is inspired by the different cultures of countries. Every country has their own typicalities, like their own drink, mascotte and landmarks. I really like these differences, it brings variety to the world and makes life on earth more interesting.
A theme like this deserves its own playing cards, so I present to you: The Cultura Playing Cards deck!
- Produced by Legends Playing Cards Company
- Poker sized cards
- Classic finish
- 54 fully customized cards
- Custom tuckbox
- Custom stamp sticker (stretch goal)
- Inside tuckbox printing (stretch goal)
- Embossed tuckbox (stretch goal)
The Cultura Deck is a fully customized deck, with unique artwork on all 54 cards. Every suit represents a country, and every number/court card represents a cultural categorie. This way every suit gives a nice overview of the countries culture.
Every number card represents a cultural categorie. As you can see in the picture below, the US is pretty well depicted like this.
By comparing the numbers with each other you can see the difference between the countries clearly.
I chose a retro flat design style for the design of the cards. When you look at the cards more closely you will discover a lot of details.
The court cards have a two way design. Like the number cards, they also each represent a categorie. The jacks are designed with traditional men clothing, the queens wear traditional women clothing and the kings refer to an old ruler/king of the country.
Please also pay attention to the things they hold, which are typical products of their country. I will tell you more about this in the updates during the project.
I chose to make a connected red and black joker for this deck. They are juggling balls with each other. The red joker is a jack in the box, and its looks are a tribute to my uncle who just passed away. I have played a lot of card games with him so I thought this would be a nice way to remember him.
The back design of the card is colorful and typically retro. It is a two way back, decorated with the four suits.
The design of the tuckbox is based on the back design of the cards. The box comes with an embossing, custom stamp sticker and inside printing if the stretch goals are reached.
Goal 1: Stamp sticker
The first stretch goal is a custom stamp sticker to seal the tuckbox. This sticker will be numbered indivually, which means every deck becomes one of a kind and increases greatly in collectors value. Since I really want to add this sticker to the deck I have set this stretch goal as low as possible.
Since this is my first project I want to keep things simple. My number one priority is to deliver the decks on time. That is why I kept the number of add-ons limited to uncut sheets and A4 poster prints. Please check below for detailed information about these items.
If you want any of these add-ons, just increase your pledge by the appropriate amount of money after selecting your reward level.
If you are unfamiliar how to increase your pledge, this video tutorial might help. Off course you can always contact me if you have any questions.
The posters will be printed by a professional printer in the Netherlands with long lasting pigment ink on high quality matte 189gr paper. I made a video of all the cards in an A4 frame so you can see how they will look like. Feel free to add an A4 size poster to your pledge. I will ask you which card(s) you would like as a poster in a survey after the funding.
It is also possible to just pledge for the posters without a deck of cards.
An uncut sheet is a deck of cards before it is cut into pieces. This way it serves great as a unique decorative poster. See an example of the colorful uncut sheet above, frame is not included. These uncut sheets will only be printed once, so they are a great collectors item.
To make things even more interesting, if the project gets funded, I will give away 10 A4 posters in a lottery for all the backers of the project. So regardless of how much you pledge, you will have a chance to win an A4 poster of your choice. I will draw the winners in a video at the end of the project and this will be posted in an update.
The Cultura Deck will be manufactured by the Legends Playing Cards Company, which is a well known company under playing card enthousiasts. The quality of their decks are among the best of the world.
To ensure that your decks arrive safely and quickly, LPCC will also handle the fulfillment of the decks. Having manufactured and distributed pledges for countless successful campaigns, no other card company does logistics better than Legends.
The exchange rates of euro's and other currencies change every day, so this is just on indication of the exchange rate at this moment.
- €1,00 = 1,11 USD
- €1,00 = 0,71 GBP
- €1,00 = 1,41 AUD
1. Project live on kickstarter
2. (hopefully) project gets funded
3. LPCC starts with deck production
4. A4 posters will be printed in the Netherlands
5. Decks will be shipped to the Hong Kong fulfilment centre
6. Decks will be distributed to all backers from Hong Kong
7. Posters will be distributed to all backers from the Netherlands
If this project is successful I probably will release more countries in the future. I was thinking of using the same back design so the countries will be interchangeable. Just some ideas for the future. If you have any input for me about this, then you are welcome to contact me or leave a comment ^_^!
I have worked almost a year on this deck of cards and I have put a lot of effort in it. I really want this deck to get produced, so please help me make this dream come true with a (small) pledge and I will be very grateful. Even if these cards are not your cup of tea, please help me share the project with the world!
Thank you all in advance and I am excited to get this project started!
Risks and challenges
This is my first project so everything is new for me. I did a lot of research on other projects though and with an experienced partner like LPCC that will handle the deck production and distribution, I think I have minimized the risks as much as possible. With my experience as a designer, I am pretty confident to bring this project to a good end.
All the artwork is finished and I am already in contact with LPCC.
Like in every project, unexpected delays can occur. I will do my utmost best to prevent this and deliver the decks on time. I am aiming to deliver the decks in november 2015. The posters will probably be delivered earlier, since they will be printed and send directly from the Netherlands. Of course I will keep you all informed about the proces with regular updates.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about this project. I will do my best to reply as soon as possible. During the project I will check the comments section regularly.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
