About this project
Introducing the Mamut VR Protection Kit - Vive
Safety for your gear without compromising the experience
WHY?
From the get go it was quite clear that the controllers was in great risk of hitting just about everything around you while playing.
YouTube and Reddit forums later proved this to be a real concern. Something had to be done. With experience in completing similar projects and working in the industry we saw our opportunity
when no one else seemed to want to take the leap.
We chose kickstarter to gather funds for
the initial mould needed for mass production of the Skull.
HOW?
Using already known and tried sources in China for production and using our warehouse in Shenzen is the key for holding down production and shipping costs.
The design and process for the products differs:
Mamut Skull
The complicated one. Combining thick, lightweight material without covering the sensors was the two main issues. It needed to be thick, with internal deformation zones so it could withstand a real smack in the wall and of course it should not interfere with tracking. This one started, and even named the project (frontal, tilted a bit up nose - voilá! A skull).
Material: Solid Matte Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)
Method: Injection Mould Size: 124x48x72mm Weight: 57 grams / 2oz
Mamut Spine
The stock strap provided has proven to be under dimensioned. We have corrected the original design by having a thicker loop that will
keep the controller connected to the strap even if dropped in high speed during gameplay. In addition we also added a quick buckle so you can easily swift your left and right without having to pull the strap of your wrists.
Material: Round woven polyester, filled. Elastic.
Attachments: Quick buckle, lenght adjuster
Size: 6x220mm
Mamut Cape
There is no real science behind the Cape,
it's just a extra large microfiber cloth.
Because when it comes to sweat absorbing, bigger is better.
Material: Polyester
Method: Sublimation printed 4+0
Size: 180x150mm
Risks and challenges
Production- and distribution chain is used on a daily basis, bulletproof.
The design of the products are tested thoroughly using mockups and prototypes.
Biggest risks of the project is currency (SEK - USD) and loss of goods due to freight failure.
To big shift in currency rates will not halt the project, nor will it postpone deliveries, just eat a bigger hole in our pockets.
Loss of goods should not postpone deliveries.
The production time including moulds is 8 weeks, freight from warehouse in Shenzen to our distribution center in Sweden is 3 days. A reproduction of the kit will take 5 more weeks, which leaves us with a delivery in early December, still in time to send out as planned.
