Let's not sit back and give each other high fives and slaps on the back, just yet. We know we can do more. Two words: Stretch. Goals.
Every £30 over our funding goal, means we can buy a new rash vest or t-shirt for the Harper Sliders.
If we go £300 over we can get a new soft top surfboard for the club.
£5000 over and we can get a whole quiver of surfboards for the Sliders.
£10 000 over and we can deck out the club with a computer lab.
£20 000 over and we can build another Surf Club House for the new Waves for Change project in East London, South Africa.
So don't stop! The more pledges we get, the more good we can do through the power of African surf.
Now's the time to tell your friends or increase your pledges and load up on more Sliders goodies (there are a few new combo options). Remember, we are only making the 'Harper Sliders' range ONCE.
What is the project?
Mami Wata is a premium African surf lifestyle brand that is connecting the world to the power of African surf. The Waves for Change 'Harper Sliders' surf club in Harper, Liberia, needs a club house for their #SurfTherapy program and we want you to help us build it.
To reward you we’ve created a limited edition ‘Harper Sliders’ collection of clothing, accessories and equipment only available by supporting this Kickstarter. Buy these exclusive products and you become a member of the Harper Sliders and part of the power of African surf!
Why We're Doing It?
Harper Sliders is a surf club run by Waves for Change, a world-leading surf therapy organisation, working in communities affected by violence, poverty and conflict, where mental health services are often stigmatized and under-resourced.
Harper is an isolated town in the South of Liberia. Until recently, the community had never seen surfers or been exposed to surf culture. Since the introduction of surfing and #SurfTherapy in 2017, surfing is now booming in Harper. The beach has become a community-owned safe space and more children and adults are getting involved every day.
One by one, these kids are improving their lives through the power of African surf.
But they need a club house!
The Harper Sliders Surf Club House will create a focal point for this growing surf community; a safe, shared space around which they can bond, learn new skills and store their equipment.
At Mami Wata, we work closely with organisations like Waves for Change to fulfil our promise of being a force for good in Africa through design and creativity.
What's Special About It?
Beyond improving the lives of these children and being part of a massive wave of positivity in Liberia, we've created an exclusive range of Harper Sliders Mami Wata surf wear, all made in Africa and only available through this Kickstarter. So you can do good, feel good and look good too.
"Surfing is a brand new sport in Harper.” Explains Waves for Change founder Tim Conibear. “Before we started, there really was nothing. The beach has become a hub for the community ever since with 50 to 60 people gathering under the almond tree daily. The club house is going to create a safe space to gather, store equipment, run sessions and galvanize what’s fast becoming Liberia’s biggest surfing community!”
About the Harper Sliders Club House
The Club House is made up of two big rooms. An office and computer room (for skills training and online literacy projects)on the right, and a smaller store room for surfboards and other equipment on the left. In the middle is a bathroom and open air basement, with a shaded deck above for checking the surf.
The Harper Sliders Club House will become the home of #SurfTherapy in Liberia.
How We're Gonna Do It?
Waves for Change already has a team on the ground in Harper. We've done all the costings and agreed on the budget with the local builders. The community is standing by, ready to chip in and make this dream a reality.
Here at Mami Wata, we've designed and manufactured all the samples for our unique and exclusive Harper Sliders range, which is only available by supporting this Kickstarter, while stocks last. We've also pulled together partnerships with the best in the business to create Harper Sliders skateboards, surfboards and an original, once-off art surfboard bag with luxury brand Missibaba!
Now all we need is your support, so we can break ground in Liberia!

Harper Sliders Club House Timeline
December: Laying Foundations
January - March: Building the outer structure
April: Roofing (in time for the wet season)
May - July: Interior & Decking
August: Club House completed and in use
From May until November is the rainy season in Liberia. So we needed to get building quickly, to have the roof up by May, which will allow us to do all the finishings during the rainy season and launch the Harper Sliders Club House in August 2019.
In order to do this Waves for Change used cash from their strategic reserve fund to start the work, we're confident that we'll meet our Kickstarter goal and reimburse them.
Harper Sliders Pledge Product Timeline
Our Kickstarter runs for 30 days and finishes at the end of April 2019. In May we send the Harper Sliders Membership Cards and thank yous. We also consolidate all the pledges and place orders with our manufacturers.
By the end of June, our product arrives from our manufactures and undergoes quality control.
In July we plan shipping and distribution and in August we ship the goods. Which means you should be getting your rewards by September 2019.
The trip to Harper is scheduled for July / August 2019
We’re a new African surf lifestyle brand with big ambitions. We need your support to connect the world with the power of African surf and to make a real difference in the lives of the kids of the Harper Sliders Surf Club in Africa!
All the funds raised go towards building the club house in Harper Liberia and paying for the hard costs of the Mami Wata rewards.
Manufacturing Roadmap & Ethics

This is an ongoing journey that we have proudly undertaken as part of our manifesto to be a force for good in Africa through design and creativity. Come with us!

Risks and challenges
Building a club house in Liberia could be considered a risk, but Waves for Change are an incredibly accomplished organisation who understand the political, economic and social factors in Liberia and more locally, in Harper. We are using an established and experienced local building team, and available materials and fittings. Waves for Change project managers are on the ground, overseeing the build.
Manufacturing high quality apparel in Africa could seem challenging, but here at Mami Wata, we have several years experience in this field and we work with some incredible suppliers and firms to create our goods to the highest quality and spec.
Beyond that we have all the roles, mechanisms and supply chains in place to not only produce world class apparel and surf equipment, but to distribute anywhere in the world.
Mami Wata currently runs a thriving online business delivering our product to a global audience. We also have two brick and mortar stores in Cape Town and are stocked in surf and lifestyle shops all around South Africa, the UK, Switzerland and Japan.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
