Starrytellers is a beautiful comics anthology created by 11 Australian women, featuring ten short stories inspired by stars. Each comic interprets the theme in the artist's own way, creating a collection of comics that range from introspective, to adventurous, to super cute!
Why stars? Stars are great! As a theme, it's broad, offering up mythology, history, science fiction, you name it.
The Starrytellers anthology will be a 96 page, full colour, offset printed book, with matte soft covers and silver foiling. We want this book to be something we're all proud of, to reflect the quality of the comics on the inside! But we need your help to make this happen.
Printed locally and featuring exclusively home-grown talent, Starrytellers is 95% ready to go, with the art pretty much done and a print proof arriving any day now. Printing will take only a week, meaning we WILL make the Christmas shipping window domestically, and possibly internationally as well.
Because we (Mamath and Alisha) are passionate about artists being paid for their work (and before everyone else has taken their cut), all of the artists on Starrytellers have already received a base page rate out of our own pockets. With your help, we can raise enough funds to print the book and then to give our contributors more dollars for their excellent and enthusiastic work.
We have ten different Australian artists, each with a unique visual style and voice:
PLUS our cover artist Sai Nitivoranant (AKA Lovesoup)!
We hope that through Starrytellers you'll discover new artists to love, as well as some great comics!
The artist signed bookplates are signed by every single artist contributing to the book. :D
This other bookplate option doesn't have all the artist signatures - but you can get a personalised inscription instead, and a sketch by one of the editors! Oooh fancy!
Examples of what a sketched bookplate will look like! We've been getting some practice in.
The $100 tier gets both the artist signature bookplate AND a second sketched bookplate with a custom inscription and sketch from one of the editors. Use the inscription to proclaim this copy of Starrytellers as YOURS and YOURS ALONE. Or use it to send well wishes to a friend! Or...make Mamath write something really rude in delicate cursive script, I guess. THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS.
Mamath is actually better known for making toys than making comics. She's pretty good at it! And has a very expensive embroidery machine to back her up! Based on the bat character in Alexis Sugden's Starrytellers comic, this plush will be at least 6 inches tall (ears/wings not included), made of super soft minky fabric, with embroidered details. Entirely hand-made, these plush are extremely limited.
PLEASE note that the plush toys are art-collectible items and NOT intended for play.
The beautiful original cover art painted for Starrytellers by Sai could be hanging on your wall!
It's very hard to get Alisha to work on other people's projects but YES if you back this tier, she will draw a comic up to 8 pages, under YOUR direction. Up to simple colours! - it could be...anything? If you have a script hanging around that you're just dying to comic-ify, here's your chance to get that done.
Mamath is also offering up comic-ifying services! At the $1000 tier, Mams will draw an 8-page black/white comic under your direction. This is MUCH less than she would normally charge for something like this.
If you would like more info about the custom comic tiers (reproduction rights, size, materials, etc!), please message us here on Kickstarter or email at firstname.lastname@example.org!
$8000 is our initial goal and allows us to print 750 books.
At $9000 we can print 1000 books!
At $10500, $12000 and $13500, artists get an extra monetary bonus per page!
At $15000 we can print more books again!
And so on, adding more artist bonuses and books as we're able. :)
Every retweet, reblog and Facebook share helps us to reach out to interested people!
There's a reblog campaign happening over on Tumblr to help us spread the word:
We know not everyone can afford to pledge but spreading the work helps us a lot!
Risks and challenges
Both Sam and Alisha have printed many comics before, separately, so we have the experience. We’ve printing with a local Brisbane printer so there’s no risk of enormous printing or shipping delays due to offshore printing. And the book is ready to go, so no art delays!
All in all we’re pretty well set. We got this.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
