Mamahuhu Colombia is a women's fashion brand producing high quality leather shoes and bags. Our small, international team is spread between the United States and Colombia, such that we are able to work directly with the artisans in order to bring you the best product possible at a fair price.
We've had a great year - building relationships with the artisans, establishing the brand in Colombia, and making products that we’re truly proud of. From the beginning, we've wanted to make Mamahuhu Colombia available in the U.S. and around the world. Now it’s time to make that a reality.
With your pledge:
- You’ll help us to complete our 2013 Collection (more designs & colors)
- We'll be able to keep over 15 highly skilled artisans employed
- You’ll receive a stylish Mamahuhu product at a discounted presale price!
Shipping any product directly from Colombia is prohibitively expensive, to the extent that we've had to turn down many orders. To better serve our American and international customers, we need to set up a fulfillment center in Miami, Florida.
The money raised through this project will go towards the completion of our 2013 collection. Successfully funded, we’ll be able to finish our first production run, ship in bulk to Miami, and open our online store shortly after we ship our Kickstarter backers’ rewards.
A core team of three young entrepreneurs (one Colombian, one Spaniard, and one American):
- Carolina Rodriguez: Co-founder, Lead Designer
- Luis Moreno: Co-founder, Operations
- Jack Dorney: Webmaster, Sales and Marketing
The three of us met in a coffee shop in Shanghai, China. After studying the footwear manufacturing industry in Asia, we sought an alternative to the factory/sweatshop setting and the opportunity to exercise complete control over the entire process - from design to material selection to production - to ensure superior quality. We found precisely that in Bogotá, Colombia.
For your pledge, you'll be rewarded with a selection from the upcoming 2013 collection. The colors and designs that are available to Kickstarter backers (including the exclusive Kickstarter Green Colorines) are shown below, with plans to expand the line based on the success of this project. And introducing the Urbana backpack, with a limited number available to those who pledge $130 or more:
You may notice that some of the products shown above differ slightly from what's seen in the video or on our website. We've recently made significant improvements to the University Handbag and Kenya boots. The graphic above is reflective of the rewards that you will receive as a backer.
How To Support Mamahuhu Colombia
Thank you for choosing to make our project a reality! On the upper right hand side of our project page, there are several different pledge tiers and a green button to Back This Project. Match your pledge to your desired reward, and follow the instructions to become a project backer (you'll need a Kickstarter and Amazon account). Immediately following the conclusion of our successful campaign, we will request your shipping address and your size/color preferences.
If you like what we're doing, please consider backing us and telling your friends and family about this project. Thanks so much for your support!
Risks and challenges
Fashion is an inherently difficult business, and the burdens to delivering a quality product in a timely manner are numerous. Designing, sourcing, manufacturing, exporting - all of these activities require sufficient knowledge and experience to overcome.
Though this project represents our biggest challenge to date, we are well-equipped to deal with the risks involved. We have already dealt with the common problems that have plagued similar projects - material or labor shortage, legal issues in exporting/importing - and have taken such opportunity to revise and even better our products as a result. Our organizational structure, with management spread between the U.S. and Colombia, allows us to deal with sourcing or manufacturing problems directly, without the need of an intermediary.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
