About this project
Fund Urban Doxology’s New Album to encourage gospel-centered reconciliation and flourishing in urban neighborhoods!
NEW GOAL ANNOUNCED!
Will you partner financially with us to raise $30,000 and share this project with family and friends? Let's rejoice and make the most of this blessing!
Imagine urban communities throughout the world where people of all races, ethnicities, and walks of life are singing praises to God together; where all people are valued and have a seat at the table - because ALL people are made in God's image (Revelation 7:9). They are working together in a gospel-centered way to seek reconciliation, justice, and restoration in their diverse urban communities, knowing that the Gospel isn’t only about spiritual salvation, but about God bringing his Kingdom on Earth here and now.
Who are we?
Making a Melody (MAM) is a nonprofit ministry based in Richmond, Virginia committed to providing cultural training and worship resources for diverse communities who seek to cultivate the flourishing of all people. For the past four years, we’ve co-hosted an Urban Songwriting Internship to write gospel-centered worship songs that are theologically rich, culturally diverse, and musically excellent for the urban context. We call this the Urban Doxology Project.

What is this project? Why are we on Kickstarter?
We’ve written over 70 songs and are now producing and releasing quality albums for churches and communities that are committed to worshiping with people across racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic barriers. Our debut album was produced in 2014 through our own fundraising, and we now invite you to partner with us in producing the 2015 Urban Doxology Album. This project is more than just an album of music, but a declaration that God wants to use His people to bring His Kingdom to our cities here and now!

But again, why can’t we just use standard worship songs? What makes this music different from other worship albums?
There is a need. A theological and musical gap exists in the worship resources available for multi-ethnic, multi-racial, and multi-socioeconomic communities. What is “standard” worship music anyways? Most congregations can pinpoint one worship style that is normal to them, or a few styles that they enjoy the most. The Christian Worship & Media industry tends to market to people based on demographics, thus reinforcing many racial, ethnic, age, and socioeconomic divisions. We produce music that breaks down these boundaries by employing a variety of lyrical content and worship styles to connect everyone at some point.
How are we going to use the money?
We had a minimum goal of $15,000 that we met within a 48 hour window! God is good! Now we ask for your partnership in raising an ideal goal of $30,000+. This money will go towards the production of music videos, marketing, and supporting the creation of quality worship music for the urban context. With your support, if we can raise $30,000, this is how we will use it:

Risks and challenges
One of the greatest risks that we face is that we don’t have resources for churches that are trying to cross the racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic barriers in worshipping communities. Since the inception of this project, we’ve had tremendous support, helping us get to this point. In order to reach the next level, though, we need more supporters. We need people that embrace our mission and believe in our work enough to support it financially and share it with friends.
Like any project, meeting deadlines and milestones is always a challenge, and in light of this challenge we have: 1) created a timeline of one year to finish the project, and 2) budgeted for a project manager to help supervise the project.
We are honored that people will support our mission, and so with great honor comes great responsibility. We will do everything within our power to steward our time and resources faithfully.
Another challenge that we face is the ability to effectively communicate the purpose behind this project. Yes, on the surface, this Kickstarter project is funding an album of great worship music. However, it is about much more than just music. We have gone to great lengths to do our very best in trying to lay out all of the details of the overarching vision yet be clear and concise at the same time. If you have any reservations or concerns about the project that you want to chat about, shoot us an email at firstname.lastname@example.orgLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
The Urban Doxology Project focuses on creating worship content and practices that cross racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic barriers. Whether you are in an urban, rural, or suburban community, we believe that pursuing Christ means overcoming these barriers for the sake of the gospel, and you will need resources for this journey. In addition to theological reasons there are practical ones: due to gentrification and the displacement of economically poor people, the number of economically poor people living in the suburbs is steadily increasing. Conscientious suburban churches need these types of worship resources also.
Why focus on worship and music in urban ministry rather than feeding the hungry and teaching children to read?
Worship is not only about our expression towards God, but worshipping in community is a tool that God uses to form us. When gospel-centered reconciliation becomes a part of our worshipping experiences, it opens our hearts and minds to people who would not normally be on our “radar”. This type of worship shapes us into partnering with God in his mission in the world, and with our neighbor who might not look like us.
Often in urban ministry, people easily understand meeting the physical needs of people who are economically poor. In evangelism, Christians quickly see the purpose of meeting the spiritual need of the spiritually poor.
In urban ministry, who is meeting the need of the soul? Who is telling new stories for the urban context that meet the need of the soul?
We are focusing on worship music that shapes the hearts of people in the urban context and invites us, like Jesus did, to change our ways of thinking - because the kingdom of God is at hand.
The Urban Doxology Project is a research and development ministry that is asking the question, “What does worship look like for a church that is racially, ethnically, socioeconomically diverse in the urban context?”
The Urban Doxology Songwriting Internship serves both as the ‘laboratory’ to experiment with this question and the leadership development and talent pipeline to provide the Body of Christ with the leaders for this type of ministry.
The Urban Doxology Album is the worship music that has been written from the internship program. This music is a worship resource for churches that have a heart for this question.
The Urban Doxology Band is the mouthpiece to share the message that God’s kingdom is a culturally diverse Christ-centered kingdom and that we need to practice living in this type of community in our churches to bring his Kingdom down to earth.
The Arrabon Project introduces the concept of gospel-centered diversity and reconciliation in a general sense. The Urban Doxology Project builds on the foundation of the Arrabon Project and explores what does it look like when we seek the Shalom of God together as a community. The word shalom is talking about “God weaving the world back together the way he originally intended it to be”. The Urban Doxology Project is specifically exploring what this looks like when we cross the economic barrier.
Outsourcing our marketing is essential to more people getting the music. We are faithfully living and serving in our community while simultaneously creating art for our community, so it’s important that we outsource the marketing with people who can focus on this essential component. We’ve interviewed some reputable public relations and marketing companies that will be able able to help us reach a wider audience with our mission.
