MISTRESS OF SORROWS is the forthcoming title in the DESTINY'S ROLE gamebook series written by Mark Lain, a lifelong gamebook enthusiast, and featuring a cover painted by Alan Langford (illustrator of several Fighting Fantasy gamebooks, Future Shocks in 2000AD comic, and numerous other publications) and internal illustrations by Mike Tenebrae (whose work has featured in products from Arion Games, Cubicle 7, Fantasy Flight, Niantic, Modiphius, and Avalon Games, amongst others).
DESTINY'S ROLE has an intentionally old school look and feel and is influenced by the classic fantasy gamebook series of the 1980s and 1990s such as Fighting Fantasy, Lone Wolf and Golden Dragon, to name but a few of the series that have inspired the author to create DESTINY'S ROLE. Each book can be played stand alone or you can also choose to carry your character over from book to book.
The DESTINY'S ROLE series of adventure gamebooks launched in 2018 with the introductory book, ZERO TO HERO, which has received excellent star ratings on Amazon.
Here are some reviewers' comments on ZERO TO HERO to give you an idea of what to expect from MISTRESS OF SORROWS:
"immersive and enjoyable"
"well written and entertaining"
"a top notch gamebook; very well put together"
"a wonderful adventure gamebook"
"proper old school adventuring with an immersive narrative"
"really well written and has just the right level of difficulty to draw you in"

The first draft manuscript of MISTRESS OF SORROWS is nearly finished and it is envisaged that the final version of the text will be completed by Winter 2019.
MISTRESS OF SORROWS puts YOU in the role of an adventurer who chances upon a conversation in a tavern during a speculative stop-off in the southern trading town of Riverbord. Word is that a great source of Evil, believed long-destroyed, is once again about to place the region under its malign influence. Worse still, the one-time acolytes of this Evil (known as Penelope Redcap, or the Mistress Of Sorrows) are rumoured to be regrouping to rejoin her at her side. Indeed, the Redcap herself is believed to have already begun her assault on the region in the far northern villages that are many days' travel from Riverbord. YOU must travel through the forests, hills, and plains that lie between Riverbord and your destination, collecting intelligence and essentials as you go, and dealing with the ever-increasing levels of influence and local paranoia that are only natural to exist the closer YOU get to your goal. Witchcraft and its consequences (in various forms) abound in the north, yet further south everyday life continues (or tries to continue while it still can) for the local peoples, but remember YOU must never lose focus on your ultimate aim: the Redcap must be vanquished forever or the region is lost and YOU will regret ever disembarking in Riverbord!
The purpose of this Kickstarter campaign is to raise funds to pay for artwork, manufacture of rewards, and the printing of a Kickstarter-exclusive hardback edition of the book, printed by Ingram Spark/Lightning Spark, which will not be available through retail outlets. Additionally, every copy of this hardback edition will be individually numbered and signed by the author. The hardback edition will be printed to the same 9" x 6" size format as the ZERO TO HERO paperback to maintain consistency in the series. A standard soft cover edition will be released through Amazon once Kickstarter rewards are fulfilled. It is planned that the book will feature 25 internal full-page black and white illustrations by Mike Tenebrae, as well as the full colour painted cover by Alan Langford, but this is all of course dependent on the campaign reaching its target.
Should the campaign exceed its target, there will be some stretch goals, but we will give information on these in Campaign Updates, if we are lucky enough for this to be the case, as the primary focus is on funding the project art and delivering the standard rewards on offer.
The intention is for DESTINY'S ROLE to be an ongoing series and many more titles are already being planned.
Stretch Goal 1: we have now funded so if the campaign reaches £3300 the book will include a black and white map of the region where this and other planned DESTINY'S ROLE gamebooks will be set, drawn by the legendary Malcolm Barter (of Forest of Doom and Webs of Intrigue fame, amongst other titles). Backers at the DESTINY'S RADICAL and DESTINY'S ROYALTY pledge levels will also receive a black and white A4 print of Malcolm's map (yes, that means these pledge levels will now receive TWO prints as they are already getting the colour A4 print of Alan Langford's MISTRESS OF SORROWS cover art!) Additionally, to allow backers at other pledge levels to get the chance to acquire one or both of these prints, these are now available at £10 each (simply add the relevant amount to your pledge and send a message using the Contact Me button saying which print(s) you would like and how many of each, should you want multiples). Incidentally, by backing at the DESTINY'S RADICAL pledge level you are getting both prints for the price of one...
Pledge options at a glance
Campaign updates will be sent to all backers regardless of pledge level. All hardbacks will be individually numbered and signed by the author.
All physical rewards to UK backers will be sent by Royal Mail Signed For. International backers will receive physical rewards by standard untracked Air Mail. Shipping cost is not included in the pledge price and will be added before you confirm your pledge at the following rates: UK = £5, European Union = £10, Rest of the World = £15
To order additional copies of the exclusive hardback edition of the book simply add £30 per each additional copy to your pledged amount and include a comment when you submit your pledge. Each additional copy will also be individually numbered and signed by the author.
Risks and challenges
Writing of the book is well under way and the artists' schedules fit around the likely requirements of the campaign.
The project has been budgeted realistically based on quotes from all the relevant suppliers.
Naturally, it is impossible to predict what can happen to delay a project, but delivery by June 2020 should be achievable. Obviously it is hoped that the book will be completed well in advance of this date.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
