Make your desk a portal into a more ridiculous world.
This is a desk calendar featuring biweekly cards displayed for continuous flow, i.e. the way we experience time. It contains all the regular U.S. & Canadian holidays (including the new ones celebrated by Wondermark adherents worldwide).
As the author of the comic strip Wondermark, I’ve designed a special calendar every year since fall 2007 – and they’ve been progressive-style since the 2013 edition.
By “progressive-style” I mean rather than being broken into months, it’s split into continuous 14-day chunks, so no matter what day of the month it is, you can always see at least two weeks ahead. (More on the unique design in these blog posts: Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3)
Each year the calendar follows a theme or story that’s explored from card to card throughout the year, such as an alien almanac, a bizarre bestiary, a mysterious orchestra, or an explorer’s journal.
This year, the calendar spotlights the brave athletes of the Absurd Sports League!
The Absurd Sports League was founded by mistake some decades ago, when the members of a minor league softball team arrived for their opening day away game at an altogether wrong address, and mistook the vendors of a debris-strewn flea market for the opposing team.
The players had been led to believe that the game would commence using unknown local rules, and the flea market vendors didn’t want to scare away out-of-town money. Hours later, when the misunderstanding finally came to light, all participants agreed that the afternoon had been spent far more enjoyably than it probably would have otherwise.
Now, as opening day of the new Fleaball season approaches on Boxing’s Eve, we are pleased to publish this All-Star collection, showcasing heroes from Fleaball’s past; young rookies to watch out for; the exploits of record-setting MVPs; and marquee players you might consider drafting on your fantasy team.
If you don’t like sports, well, neither did the flea market vendors, so the sport they made up proved to be unlike any other. If you do like sports, you will find Fleaball to have marked differences from any game you may already know. Not even I am sure of all the rules.
I have tried with this calendar to present an accurate overview of the history and scope of Fleaball as it has been played since its inception. But as no two games are ever the same, no three players can wear the same uniform, and no four consecutive games may be played on odd-numbered dates unless all seven endfielders agree to rotate shoes every half-quintile, I can take no responsibility for any inaccuracies the calendar may contain.
Every set of 28 calendar cards is individually signed and numbered by me! Since 2008, our calendars have been printed in a strictly limited edition, which sells out every year.
As usual, our calendar cards hang from a special wooden stand. Our plain “Classic” style stands are compatible with Wondermark calendars from 2013–2016, so if you already have a stand from one of those calendars, it will fit this year’s as well, and may be re-used.
Reward Tiers Available:
If you’d like to order multiple copies of the calendar with just one pledge, or would like to avail yourself of some special bonuses, here’s how!
We’ll use a method I tested out with my past few campaigns, and that's worked really well! It's called Code Cents.
Here on Kickstarter, you can make your pledge any arbitrary number. So if you want to add on something to your pledge, you can communicate that to me by adding a specific cents amount to your dollar total. That way, just by looking at your pledge amount, I’ll know what you’re asking for!
Wondermark Cast Cards are free (well, 1¢) bonuses for fans and collectors – little plaques that commemorate important moments in Wondermark history. If you don’t care about getting one, no worries – do nothing.
But if you do want one, just add one penny to your pledge. It’s like raising your hand when I ask who wants one!
And if this is your fifth Wondermark calendar or more, you are a Calendar Ace and you qualify for a second card too (if you like!) This is a different Calendar Ace card than was issued last year, and if you got one then, you definitely qualify to get the new one this year too!
You can stack them up, so for example: to get both the Cast Cards offered AND an ADDITIONAL set of calendar cards, you’d add 29.15 to your tier’s normal pledge amount.
Books, Holiday Cards, Wrapping Paper, and other Good Things
Are available right this second outside of this Kickstarter! I didn’t include them as rewards because I didn’t want to complicate things, and also, I didn’t want to have to wait until this project is over to send that stuff to you. (Orders from the links below can ship immediately!)
I’ve made lots of cool stuff in these other online stores, not just what’s pictured here! Go forth and order (separately):
Risks and challenges
This is the tenth year I’ve made this calendar, and the fifth year in its present format. We are using the same print vendor as before, so I have confidence in the quality.
I am fabricating the special Year X backboards by hand, in my studio. We have most of the necessary supplies already at hand, and we have limited the quantities available to ensure we can complete them in time.
This is a date-specific project and we are well aware of the challenges that accompany that. We have therefore made sure this project concludes at a reasonable date that allows us enough time to get all orders out before year’s end.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
