Through more than 5 years and 37 iterations, we've meticulously designed Maku sandals wherever life takes us—from city streets to light trails, and every place in between. We wanted a sandal that we could wear every day, walk in, travel with, and still have it come out the other side looking like new.
Our passion led us on a quest to track down some of the best materials and manufacturers in the world. We accepted nothing less than unmatched comfort, exceptional durability, and real versatility. Out of this (somewhat obsessive) journey was born the Maku sandals you see today.
And now, we need your help—to make something that was once only available to a few select individuals, available to the entire world. We appreciate your support and everything you can do to help spread the word and get people as excited and passionate about Maku as we are.
The Maku team - David, Hanane, and William
Designed and built to last for years, from some of the highest quality materials on the market.
We tested 50+ types of rubber to find the one that was the most abrasion resistant, flexible, light, puncture resistant, and that had a versatile grip, with just the right shock absorbance.
- White on Tan: 100% genuine premium leather footbed
- Red on Black: The footbed will either be made from an advanced 100% genuine premium leather with high color-fastness (i.e. color won’t fade or bleed), or an equally advanced material that has the same qualities as leather
- Black on Black: Has an anti-slip rubber footbed and is ideal for wet environments
Custom produced especially for Maku, the straps (laces) are made from a special nautical (boating) fiber that resists saltwater, sun, abrasion, lasts for years, and yet is still very soft on the hands of sailors. It looks and feels softer than cotton.
If you're familiar with the concept of planned obsolescence, then maybe you're as irritated by the practice as we are. Planned Obsolescence is the practice of intentionally and artificially limiting the useful life of a product at the design phase for the purpose of driving more sales.
Maku lives on the opposite end of the spectrum. We're great believers in the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” motto, live by it every day, and have designed Makus that way. They're made with some of the best materials in the world, intentionally designed to last for years.
We’ve spent 5 years sourcing and testing some of the best materials on the planet. That's why your Makus come with our Maku Triple Guarantee:
* Certain restrictions may apply. We'll share those with you once we formalize the relationship with our fulfillment partner.
We ship worldwide and offer FREE shipping within the US.
For our Kickstarter campaign, sizes are available in US Women’s 4 to US Men’s 13 inclusive (EU 35-46), in whole sizes only. In the near future, we will be adding more sizes, half sizes, and possibly kids' sizes.
After the campaign ends, we will send you a survey asking for your shoe size and choice of Maku sandal. We will also include an accurate method of determining shoe size to get the perfect fit: a template you can use on your foot to find your ideal Maku sandal size.
Back in 2009, I thought that going barefoot would solve my knee pain. It didn’t, but something unexpected happened. Back then, I had made myself sandals to run in but ended up wearing them more than all my other shoes.
I wore them almost every day until they broke. That’s when I decided to buy something similar. This was very frustrating because what I found either felt like cardboard or was bulky or unrefined. So I made my 2nd pair, improving the design and durability. This same story repeats 37 times!
At some point, I had made a pair of sandals for my partner Hanane, and we'd wear them almost everywhere. People were regularly coming up to us on the street asking us where we got them from. It was obvious that there was something special about these sandals.
We began accepting orders and had people buying them across 4 continents. That started a long process of “get real-world feedback, improve, repeat.” With every upgrade, we wanted the best materials so the sandals would be even more comfortable and durable.
5 years and 37 tries later, we finally had it right. So right, in fact, that as soon as we sold 50 pairs, a hundred more lined up. With each pair taking us 4 hours to make by hand, we knew we had to find a better way to bring Makus to the world.
And that’s why we're here today, reaching out to you. Launching a Kickstarter campaign will help us deliver the unmatched quality, comfort, and design of Maku sandals to you and to the world.
We love our Makus, and we hope that you want your own Makus as well. Thank you so much for sharing this journey with us!
William Choukeir. From as far back as he can remember, William has been taking things apart and making things (like his own toys, remote-controlled helicopters, meditation chairs, and clothing). When William is disappointed with products available in the market, it’s quite possible that he’ll try to build his own version. He has high standards and is obsessed with making beautiful industrial-quality consumer objects. By day, William is a designer who helps businesses make things people want. It's this combination that initially brought the 1st pair of Makus to life, and drove their persistent improvement, year after year.
David El Achkar. Over the years, David has launched and has helped others launch a variety of businesses. He truly enjoys making things work simply, setting up and optimizing operations, as well as the creativity involved in designing solutions where none were previously available. Early adopter turned co-founder, he joined the Maku team to launch a new brand and setup the infrastructure needed for people all around the world to enjoy what was once limited to a very narrow circle. At his core, David values minimalism, quality, and design. His Makus are the first thing he grabs when leaving home.
Hanane Kai. Hanane is an illustrator, maker of picture books, and an occasional award-winner. She's in love with materials and textures; with their tactile and visual qualities. That passion drove her to source the world for materials she can fall in love with, materials that ended up in Maku sandals. Hanane's special ability to know what stirs emotions in people guides the design direction of Maku. Without her, Makus would have never ventured out of our home into the wild. She has spearheaded efforts of getting early versions onto people's feet, collecting feedback, and integrating it into the final product you see here.
We already have relationships with our partners in the value chain. Specifically, we have vetted our raw materials suppliers, our sourcing and manufacturing partner, a fulfillment partner, and a logistics and import partner. In other words, we're ready to formalize those relationships and start executing as soon as we successfully fundraise.
Here's our timeline:

Risks and challenges
We have carefully chosen our partners based on prior relationships, reliability, and track record (manufacturing, sourcing, and logistics). We are very confident in the ability of our team, our suppliers, and our vendors to keep up with our schedule and deliver on time.
Having said that, we cannot always control or predict everything that may arise and there are always uncertainties and risks of delays in any manufacturing process. We believe this is very unlikely, as we’ve committed to a fairly generous window of fulfillment time in order to ship on time or earlier to everyone.
Throughout the duration of the project, we promise to keep you updated, every step of the way!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
