About

Are you a jeweller? a designer? a technologist? an alchemist? a maker?

Do you want access to cutting edge digital equipment, skills and expertise?

well.......

MAVERVERSITY Factory-on-Thames

Makerversity is a making and learning company based in the heart of Lodnon. We are building a 21st century digital factory, bringing industry back to the banks of the Thames, as well as developing learning and work placement programmes focused on emerging technologies, developing skills, attitudes and networks.

Makerversity is a collaboration between London based designers Smith and Tobia and Something and Sons and MAKLAB Glasgow.

Why do this?

1. We are creating a bustling centre for making and digital manufacture with sustainable business model that can act as a physical and financial base to support our wider objectives. Part workshop, part studio, part laboratory part learning centre.

We are creating a diverse environment where differing people, technologies, crafts, and world views can come together. The objective is for the space and its community to be a place where some of the best work across emerging disciplines is conceived of and produced.

A place where some of the most weird and wonderful collaborations occur. Where we offer a model that is fair, affordable and inclusive, ensuring creative and experimental work is not pushed out of the city.

2. We are building learning programmes for young people that aim to be viable alternatives to further education through programmes focused on developing young people's skills, attitude and creativity with connections direct into different industries.

Our programmes will be focused less around formal education and more around learning as a way of life.

Our aim is to develop young people who are engaged, proactive, critical and enthused. They should be excited by the possibilities of technology, have a love of craft and a passion for ideas.  They should be able respond proactively to constant change and new technologies with flair and confidence.

The interest and allure of these technologies is a good way to teach hands on learning that develops in young people sets of skills and approaches that are valued in a number of different growth industries.  We are developing direct routes into industries where young people developed through our learning programme can flourish.

3. Our third objective is to put digital manufacturing in the hands of people who might not ordinarily use it. We see many of these technologies as being transformative, both in a technical sense as well as from a social perspective. We have witnessed first hand how making things with technology can be an incredibly empowering exercise and how it can spark creativity and imagination.

Through projects, workshops and memberships we want to put these technologies in the hands of a wider audience and support people to make a start.

What will the kickstarter pay for?

The money will allow us to set up and kit out a full digital suit in the basement of somerset with some flexible workspaces attached. We expect to install the following as a minimum but will add to this list if funding targets are surpassed;

Risks and challenges

We have delivered a successful MAKLAB in Glasgow and have learned form the process, setting up London will present it's own challenges but we believe that we can mitigate them using our suppliers, partners and staff.

We are endeavouring to have MAKLAB London established before March 2014, if our funding target is met we will deliver MAKLAB within six months of the closing date and operate it for at-least one calendar year.

After the first year, membership renewals will then fund future years of operation in a not for profit model. So to sustain MAKLAB, we need your continued support & membership subscription.

Inevitably there may be delays procuring equipment but we will do our utmost to ensure that a full compliment of equipment is available at low cost rates from the official opening onwards.
