Well, would seem my main issue is somewhat covered in here. So I hope it means you are going to have it measure in mm, not meter as the prototype images show. :)
Magpie Tech Creador May 9
@MaikP Hi Maik!, that is correct!
@Ali Mughal Hi Ali, you can set it to either meters, centimeters, or millimeters.
@Garett Naff Hi Garett! Unfortunately, we are currently only supporting Android and IOS. Also, directly transferring to a CAD extension is currently unavailable. We support PDF and XLS formats at the moment for transfer. Thank you for your questions! We really appreciate it.

@ Braxton Howard:
Try the "Kern Mekometer ME 5000" from Kern Aarau.
This is the only sub mm' (0.2 mm + 0.2 ppm (0.4mm/km)) measuring device in the world.
As a long time specialist in high precision measurements for high risk constructions, I had the opportunity to use this "machine" several times and this is really astonishing.
Garett Naff May 9
FYI: I currently use the Disto D8 with the disto transfer software.
Garett Naff May 9
Will interface with windows devices be supported? I do measurements with Leica Disto and CAD (Revit & AutoCAD) software and am hoping this device will be a time saver for me. Naturally I hope to be able to shoot the measurements to my CAD software via bluetooth.

Hi, Braxton! Thank you for your question!
Yes, you are correct. Single mode tolerance is 1.5mm +/- and Bilateral mode tolerance is +/- 3mm. Thank you!

Is this project EU friendly?
Braxton Howard May 8
In reference to my previous question: If the bilateral mode is 3mm +/- then is single mode tolerance 1.5mm +/- ?
@Edon van Hees there are lasers that are much more accurate. My total station for surveying can measure without a reflector to I think 2mm accuracy @ 1600' in perfect conditions. It also costs $8k though, lol. You're completely right though, no handheld laser is a replacement for a steel tape. It's for roughing out sketches and such.

Hi, Chad!
Thank you for your interest.
We are developing "Sketch Application of VH-80" as we updated on our campaign page.
Application can share capture image for now. But, we are considering export the data via PDF to construct plans of your measuring activity. And, we'll develop it as much as possible. We'll share the progress of the application.
Thank you!
Chad Zsideg May 7
I'm curious about the accompanying app. I work in the architectural industry and often have to measure out existing spaces. Often times we are given various plans via PDF. Is it possible to import this file format into the app to add measurements to? Thanks!

@ Martin Christian Koch (and all of course):
There never - and I really actually mean: NEVER - will be a replacement for a tape measure.
Any contact free measuring method, like a laser distance meter, will be an additional system, not a replacement.
A laser distance meter is in most situations useless for e.g. a carpenter or a musical instrument maker.
A contact free measuring device with a measuring tolerance of +/- 0.1 mm' ?!
A plain and simple utopia!
It all has to do with the temperature of the environment, the roughness and reflection coefficient of the reflecting surfaces and the terrestrial refraction, not even to mention the instrumental drift of the laser units itself.
Magpie Tech Creador May 7
@ Gary
Hi, Gary! Thank you for your question!
Yes, we can. We are preparing for setting up the equipment to calibrate VH-80 under ±3mm.
VH-80 has shown minimum deviation during out test runs; our working prototype which made in a mold is consistent with our stated accuracy. However, we are definitely aware of the possibilities of increased deviation in angle during mass production, so we are currently building a comprehensive QC guideline.
Thank you.
Thank you

@ David
Hi, David! Thank you for your question :)
Operating temperature range of VH-80 is -10°C~40°C. And, the temperature of storage range is -25°C ~ 60°C.
Thank you.
Gary May 6
Can the laser calibration be tightened now with all the funding to a better control of under a -/+ 5mm? For volume measurements -/+5mm can add up to several cm off.
David Strobel May 5
I'm interested in measuring the distances of curling stones to the center of a target. The game is played on ice. What is the lower temperature range for your device?
Magpie Tech Creador May 5
@Martin
Hi, Martin. Thank you for your comment!
As we know there is no the laser measurement which tolerance of about +/- 0.1mm in the present even BOSCH and Leica. And, they are researching the laser module which can minimize the tolerance of their product. It's the same for us! We are developing and researching how we can minimize it also. If you leave your email address via message, we'll let you know our progress of the research :)
Thank you

@backers : Think this one through; tolerance on +/- 3mm - means that the "precision" of your measurements can be more than 0.5cm off ... are you able to live with that??
Simply not precise enough for any use, as I see it. Give it a thought.
@creator : If you come up with a product that could actually replace the measurement tapes, it would need a tolerance of about +/- 0.1mm. Give me a call when you launch such a product.
Cheers (and you are welcome!)
Magpie Tech Creador May 3
@Braxton
Hi, Braxton! Thank you for your interest.
3mm tolerance in bilateral mode is right :) In terms of marker for the center, we're looking for the best way checking the midpoint on VH-80. It seems to be marked on VH-80 as you can see black triangle on the front side. We got a suggestion about additional notch from other backers and we're considering where we mark one more notch on the product. We'll let you know soon about where we'll mark it additionally and if it is available or not.
Thank you :)
Braxton Howard May 3
Also, is the 3mm tolerance in bi lateral mode or in single and double mode? It would make sense to me that if 3mm for double then single would be 1.5mm.
Braxton Howard May 3
I would very much like to throw in my vote for a marker for the center of the measurement on at least 1 more side, a painted arrow would be ok but a groove all the way around would be so so much better. Without a mark touching the wall it's extremely hard to get a good mark.
If you can't do this in production I guess I could score it myself but I'm sure yours would look better.

@Sean
@Andrew
Hi, Sean! And, Thank you for your comment Andrew :)
Yes! As Andrew mentioned, Our 100K stretch goal was a wrist strap. We'll add one strap in every each package. You can check 3D modeling of VH-80 on "Specification" our campaign page. There is a lanyard ring on the right side of the product to tie the strap:)
Thank you!
Andrew Carletti May 2
@Sean If you look at update #3 the 100K stretch goal was a wrist strap so it looks like this will be included. Also, you can get wrist strap mounts for cameras that screw in to the tripod mount as well.
Sean Stephen Murphy May 2
I use distance measurements out in the field a lot including holding it over the side of bridges. Have you considered adding a lanyard ring?
Magpie Tech Creador May 1
@Oleg
Hi, Oleg! Thank you for your interest.
All devices sold today in the market works in a single direction as you mentioned. Therefore, you must travel from one end to another to take the measurement. This includes conventional laser distance measurers. By working bilaterally, the need to move is gone. You can reach both ends of your measurement without reaching either ends. This simple difference is a huge advantage in time, energy, and resources (cost).
We're really confident the product will deliver on time. We actually sent out 20 products to "TechShop" members for review before we launched our Kickstarter campaign, and 2 to the tool and hardware community ZRM for review(We uploaded a review on our Update #6). ZRM bought a retail pack after confirming VH-80 is legit in flesh. And, We are currently building a comprehensive QC guideline to manufacture stably such as BOSCH and Leica.
Thank you!
Oleg Merzlyakov May 1
how the product is different (i.e. better) from the ones already available in the market ? For instance right now I could buy online Bosch or Leica Laser measuring devices at less than $100, without extra risk awaiting when your production process finishes and with 1.5mm precision level which is twice better than VH-80. thanks.

@ Edward Lay:
Ironic indeed.
But it all has to do with laser classes and regulations.
Not counting the - portable - energy needed for a laser measuring device, manufacturing a laser unit that will produce a red dot on a distance of 40 + meter, is not that hard.
But this type of laser measuring device is commonly used in public environment and a laser unit, producing such a high energetic laser beam will most likely cause severe eye injuries.
Even if you are absolutely alone in a room, an unexpected reflection in a mirror could cause some serious damage to your own eyes.
These laser glasses do not only provide better visibility of the red dot, but also protect up to a certain level.
They are available as "over glasses" too.

Yes! Thank you, of course the laser glasses! clip-on lenses also sound pretty badass. We're putting that all on our agenda. Thank you!
