About

I would love to hold an issue of The Magnolia Review in my hands and not just read it electronically. With these funds, I can print Volume 4, Issue 1, and Volume 4, Issue 2. We have published two issues a year since 2015. We're accepting submissions for our ninth issue.

Writing stories, poems, creative nonfiction, and drawing comics, painting, sculpting, and making art is my life. I love sharing other people's work with a wider audience. Reading submissions, designing the issue, and interacting with contributors and readers is a blast and a joy and a highlight of the sometimes drudgery of grad school and a full-time job.

The Magnolia Review began as an idea while I was an undergraduate creative writing student at Bowling Green State University, 2008-2012. I learned editing and design with Prairie Margins and Mid-American Review.  With the help of fellow creative writing students, Kristin Brooker, Aretha Lemon, and Alicia Harmon, we selected poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and art to create Volume 1, Issue 1, in January 2015, as an online literary magazine available as a PDF. We have published two issues a year online since 2015. We publish  photography, art, comics, creative nonfiction, fiction, flash fiction, experimental work, and poetry. For more information about The Magnolia Review, please see our website, www.themagnoliareview.com.

By pledging, you'll be able to choose from a physical copy of Volume 4, Issue 1, a physical copy of Volume 4, Issue 2, postcards, and bookmarks. I am raising funds to pay the printer to make 500 copies of Volume 4, Issue 1, and 500 copies of Volume 4, Issue 2. Each contributor (writers and artists) in both issues will receive two copies because of their contribution to the issue. Volume 4, Issue 1, has 48 contributors, and Volume 4, Issue 2, has 40 contributors. The remaining copies will be available to fulfill the pledges here on Kickstarter.

Excerpts from Volume 4, Issue 1.

"'Did you hear what I said, Davey?' Jon was drunk, and his insistent words flowed with a sloppy ease that David sometimes saw in him. He was standing, unsteadily, before the eight-point deer skull hanging from a nail in a tree. 'I said, I can’t think of a single reason why anyone would ever need to know that. Not a single reason.'

Jon had managed to push himself out of his chair and clatter through the empties, stopping before the skull he’d spotted, vanishing in the gathering darkness outside the glow of their fire. David had corrected Jon’s observation ('That’s one horny bastard!') by pointing out that deer had antlers, not horns. A facile, automatic response to his friend’s misstatement."

--from "Fire Sermon" by Paul Lamb

"The highways like frozen rivers

isolate,

capillaries and deltas of asphalt

sprawling,

‘this is the future’ the past will say.

The roads fill with travelers almost

together

yet always alone, infinite headlights

weave

and merge—so why is it still dark?"

--from "Highways Like Frozen Rivers" by Ben Groner III

"Adam tossed Carla’s wedding album into the banker’s box after he dumped a DVD of Meghan and Amanda’s fourth birthday party at Disneyland. Carla’s lower lip trembled as she ejected a four-letter word and told Adam to move faster."

Excerpts from Volume 4, Issue 2.

" Two fools, we:
  sun-baptized and swallowed up.
  When we kissed later
  in the sizzling rain,
  I could taste
  the day in your throat."

--from "Two Fools" by Sarah A. Etlinger

"The collapse of your second marriage has left you feeling numb, wandering around in a fog, unable to think, or feel, or do much of anything. You left her, so you don’t really have a place to stay. You impose upon your friend Matt for a while, but it’s clear you are in the way of his complicated marriage. You decide to leave the Bay Area and head back east."

--from "Turtle Bay" by Henry Hitz

"I was too young to remember the day I brought home the secret to eternal life, but I know I did, because I know that it stank like mold. It did for years, infiltrating the air of my family living room from its perch on a high, cement ledge. I found it at a pet store when I was two, a small, slender frog that my parents let me bring home as my very first pet. I walked down the aisles of the shop on the far end of town, dragging my fingers across the grates of gerbil cages and wooden dog pens until I stopped in front of a wall of glass, floor to ceiling tropical fish and hermit crabs. I chose the aquatic frog, because it was at my eye level, close to the floor. Or anyways, that’s how my dad tells it."

Regardless of what you are able to pledge at this time, thank you for supporting The Magnolia Review!

Risks and challenges

The challenge of this project is working with the printer, and dealing with their deadlines and schedule. If the printer is behind schedule, I will inform you of the schedule changes and do what I can to deliver the copies to you as soon as I receive them. There are proof copies to communicate with the printer so the issue is print ready, which may also increase the delay in receiving pledges.

Please keep in mind that I am in grad school and work full-time, so my free time is limited. The Magnolia Review is a priority for me, and I will do my best to fulfill the pledges as quickly as I can. I will inform you of any changes in the schedule.
