About this project

Nostalgia (title subject to change) is a project that aims to blend visual novel with adventure gameplay. We were influenced by games such as Phoenix Wright, 999 and Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward. In terms of setting, books like Brave New World provided us with further inspiration.

In Nostalgia, you play as Alice, a child kidnapped and forced to take part in Project Nostalgia, a chain of experiments conducted to confirm the existence of an alternate universe. Other victims her age wanted nothing more than to escape. Alice, however, suffered from family abuse before her capture, and this science facility could in fact be a new home for her.  

12 years later, the victims managed to flee from the facility. Some simply wanted to move on, while others thirsted for revenge. Meanwhile, their counterparts in the alternate universe were screaming to be let loose. Alice must pick a side, and she only prayed her decision would not anger her alter ego.

Note: The story may vary as development progresses. If we are able to secure funding, writer InvertMouse will jump on board to put together an ~50,000 script for us. InvertMouse is also a visual novel creator. His recent titles are Cursed Sight and Without Within 2, with Unhack 2 currently in the works.

Two worlds, one soul: Just about every character in this adventure will have their alter egos to deal with. These counterparts may share the same soul, but there is no guarantee that they will get along.

Environment interaction: Players will investigate various locations throughout the game. Find, combine and use items to solve puzzles and survive in the tense world of Nostalgia.

Animated graphics: Our team is working hard to deliver animated graphics onto your screen. We hope you will like them!

    Multiple endings: We want the story to incorporate plenty of twists, and the team has two alternate endings in mind so far.

Voice acting: Nostalgia will feature voice acting during key moments of the game.

The Nostalgia experience will consist of three elements—visual novel, puzzle rooms and battle sequences.

We want nostalgia to feature a deep story, and the best way to express that is via a visual novel. Players will be asked to make plenty of decisions throughout this adventure.

We call the escape rooms "Sequences."

Besides telling a good story, we also want the user to interact with the game as much as possible. That's why we have created a few puzzle escape rooms, not just as an interactive experience, but also as an addition to the main story. In fact, these rooms are totally related to it.

We have also included an additional feature to our game: Battle Sequences. Battles are complementary to the story, therefore they only take place at key points of the game, so you won't see them too often. There is no experience/stats system, only you and your weapons.

A traditional styled adventure ties the above elements into a cohesive whole. Explore the environment and discover items vital to your survival.

With the Wii U Gamepad we want to take the game to another level. A few of the puzzles will be exclusive on PC, while others will be only available on Wii U. A few exclusive Gamepad features are:
-Object scanning.
-Off-TV
-Brand new GUI

The Magna Studios team loves dark stories filled with unpredictable twists. We are fans of films like Inception, Se7en, The Usual Suspect, The Butterfly Effect and Oldboy.  

Visual novel is still a growing field in the western world. By including more traditional flavors of gameplay, we hope to further spread the popularity of this medium.

The Team:

We have been backing projects on Kickstarter for a long time. Some projects have finished, while others ended up being failures. Money is a requirement in any endeavor, and we are grateful for your consideration.

We want the community to be a part of this project, so we will be creating a forum for players to contribute their ideas. It is impossible to fulfill every wish, but we certainly appreciate your participation.

Risks and challenges

Combining storytelling with gameplay will be a challenge. In order to achieve the best result, we have a broad range of testers on deck (from casual to hardcore gamers) to provide feedback.

With so many things to get right, we must work hard to deliver the final product on time. If we are able to receive funding, we will dedicate ourselves to the development of this project
