"It's like if John Waters made Teen Beat." -Buddy Hangs, filmmaker and comedian
FRIDAY Magazine is a female-run quarterly alternative arts and culture magazine. It's lo-fi, lowbrow, and filled with retro-inspired design and aesthetic! FRIDAY's mission is to empower an array of creative perspectives and voices in each eclectic and eccentric issue.
FRIDAY Magazine is a smorgasbord of amazing art, titillating articles, fascinating interviews, and comics! Some of our recurring features include 'Hunk of the Month', quizzes, horoscopes, offbeat travel guides, and so much more! It's 100% female-run and 1000% far out.
Historically, the majority of "fun" and "weird" magazines in the world have been run by men. Who made these rules? FRIDAY Magazine is the female-run MAD Magazine of tomorrow! The lady-powered Juxtapoz of today! Many female-run magazines today are doing amazing things to empower women and share underrepresented perspectives, but there's still a need for a female-run magazine that isn't afraid to get weird and let its freak flag fly!
Even though you'll hear rumors of print being dead on the streets today, it's actually a wonderful time to start a print magazine! The DIY zine-makers of yesterday have stepped up their game and are producing exciting and groundbreaking publications.
Even with all this progress, I have found that there's still a need for a female-run magazine that taps into the lowbrow, raw art and weirdo scene with an unbridled curiosity in the oddities of modern and past life. As I preparing to put issue 1 together, I was doing a lot of research about what goes into making a magazine and was saddened to discover that the majority of the magazines I enjoyed growing up and currently are run by men and often times have misogynistic undertones that put women down. I decided that I would change things. I couldn't find a magazine that had everything that I wanted in it, so I decided to go out and make it myself.
Issue 1 of FRIDAY Magazine was a huge success! It was a pure passion project made out of love for the indie and DIY scene and a frustration over not seeing enough of the things I liked to see in today's magazine culture. While issue 1 of FRIDAY was great, issue 2, 3 and 4 (which will finish out year 1 of the magazine) are going to be bigger and better! Issue 2 is all ready to be printed and chock full of fabulous weirdness! It's like I took everything I learned from making issue 1 and gave it a Mario magic mushroom. We have so many incredible people in these upcoming issues - I'm so excited to share them with you, but I need your help to make them a reality!
"It's seriously the most fun I've ever had with a magazine, and I subscribe to Playboy." -Donna Seeker, life coach and LGBTQ activist
Making a magazine takes a lot of time and a lot of money. FRIDAY Magazine is a one-woman operation at the moment and in order to bring FRIDAY Magazine issues 2, 3 and 4 to life and finish out the 2018 year with a bang, I need your help! Printing and distributing a magazine isn't cheap, that's why so many publications are exclusively online these days! But I think we all can agree that holding a magazine you've been dying to read in your hands is incomparable.
Having a budget to produce the issues 2, 3, and 4 would mean that I'd be able to pay the talented writers, photographers, illustrators, and designers for their amazing work, which would in turn make FRIDAY Magazine even bigger and better! We'd like to keep the magazine as ad-free as possible so we can fill it to the brim with great content! That being said, we haven't brought on any advertisers yet and we'd only want to work with advertisers who share our core values. We need your help to bring FRIDAY Magazine issues 2, 3 and 4 to life!
The money I raise here on Kickstarter will go towards:
- Print full-color copies of issue 2, 3 and 4
- Distribution and mailing
- Paying contributing writers
- Paying contributing artists
- Paying contributing photographers
- Research & development
We've got lots of fun rewards that you can pick from! I worked hard to make rewards that I would want to receive, so I hope you will like them too! There are options for whatever level you are able to back us at! Anything you can offer to back this project is greatly appreciated!

Risks and challenges
After printing issue 1 of FRIDAY Magazine I realized that the printing process can be tricky if you're not prepared for surprises. Sometimes things don't turn out as expected when they are translated from digital to tangible format. As with any printing endeavor, things can potentially go wrong during the printing and mailing process. Printing deadlines could get pushed back if there are mix-ups with layouts and proofs. Mail could get delayed. I will do everything I can to have rewards delivered when I say they will be delivered, but the mail can sometimes do strange things, so this could be a challenge.
My hope is that this project will help fund issues 2, 3, and 4 of FRIDAY Magazine, which will finish out the 2018 year! Issue 1 was a learning process on the design, curation, printing and mailing front and now we're ready to take what we learned and make issues 2, 3 and 4 bigger and better!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
