Hear Ye, Hear Ye! The smelt are coming! The Smelt Queen and her vast tribe are out there, out in the Deep Loveliness. Soon her majesty will return to deliver her abundance on our shores. This marvel must not go unheralded! Nay, citizens of the kingdom, let us conjure a fitting and festive celebration together!
The Smelt Queen wants you! The particulars are as follows: There shall be a welcoming ceremony on Sunday, April 21st, at 4:00 in the afternoon, in the vicinity of the Aerial Lift Bridge. The Royal Smelt Guard will welcome the faithful. The Brass Messengers will uplift the spirit. Puppets both large and small, as well as comical masks, will prance about in a manner most amusing. These animated apparitions shall lead a procession on the Lakewalk, to the Zeitgeist Arts Cafe, where smelt shall be served and provide sustenance.
For those both able and willing, we seek the wherewithal, the wampum, a few shekels, some dough, some cheese, some scratch, a reasonable sum of moolah. If this be granted, there shall be free workshops, beginning in late March, where citizens of all ages may assist in the creation of puppets, masks, and costumes, and be part of this performance spectacle. We have reserved a downtown location where Magic Smelt artists will direct all participants in exuberant and fanciful preparations for this site specific masquerade. If this be granted, Duluth shall triumph in a glorious rite of abundance and collective merriment.
Ye shall not be disappointed! Run, Smelt, Run!

Risks and challenges
This will be our second annual Run Smelt Run event. We are grateful and pleased to report that both last year and this year we have received funding from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council to bring the Brass Messengers up from Minneapolis to accompany our puppet spectacle, second line parade, and smelt fry. We have the music covered.
Our kickstarter campaign is dedicated to hosting workshops which will integrate everyone who wants to be involved. We wish to host free workshops for one month prior to the event. We would love to keep the workshop doors open as many hours as possible, pay our principal artists, buy fabric and paint, and make an incredible puppet parade party together.
The heart and soul of this project is the participation of families and individuals.
The biggest unpredictable factor for us is the weather on April 21st. If necessary, we would stage our event entirely at Zeitgeist Arts Cafe.
In 2012 we were blessed with decent weather.
