About

"MAGIC – KISS Kronicles 1973 to 1983” is a book that provides a day by day account of KISS’ first ten years. Photo sessions, recording sessions, rehearsals, concerts, interviews, TV appearances, band/management meetings, record company meetings, band member travels and other personal activities will all be chronicled in unprecedented detail. This information has been researched and compiled from a variety of sources including all printed material on KISS from the past 42 years (books, magazines, newspapers, fanzines), official Aucoin management paperwork, official Casablanca paperwork, official recording studio log books, hundreds of audio and video interviews, as well as new interviews with photographers, roadies, record executives, costume designers and fans. No other KISS book has ever gathered this much information and organized it in a precise timeline. Every day, every verifiable fact, every KISS fan's dream.

"MAGIC" will also present an extensive and complete study of KISS makeup, costumes, jewelry, hair styles, musical equipment and stage designs. From the clubs to Creatures, drums to dragon boots, stars to guitars, each variation of KISS' visual impact will be explained in exhaustive detail.

Another feature will be First KISS, Last Licks which will highlight the specific details of important first and last events in KISStory such as the first time Gene Simmons ever spit blood in concert or the last time Peter Criss sang "Hard Luck Woman" in concert.

"MAGIC" will be VERY photo intensive with over 300 rare, never before published images from professional and amateur photographers alike. There will be a story and detailed information to accompany each photo. Please understand, each image will be carefully chosen for MAXIMUM impact. As a photo collector/researcher for 30+ years I feel I am uniquely qualified for this task.

The book itself will be 500 pages, full color, glossy finish, hard cover, 9x12" and stunning. It will be published by Christmas 2015.

Hundreds of newly discovered facts and details will be revealed, myths will be explained and mysteries will be solved. I am absolutely committed to making this book the most honest and detailed KISS book ever. Just to be clear, this book will definitely not focus on the dirt. It will be strictly a reference book for who, what, where, when, why and how with as many rare, gorgeously sick photos as I can possibly fit into it. "MAGIC - KISS Kronicles 1973 to 1983" promises to be THE definitive story of KISS’s original make up period – the MAGIC years from 1973 to 1983.

Here are the Contents pages. Special thank you to Scott Davis and Nils Brekke Svensson for their help in this design, especially Scott Davis who did the actual work putting it together. I am blessed to have a great team of talented KISS fans working on this project.

Below is just a sample of the way the book will actually look when completed. This excerpt covers only about one month of activity but what a MAGIC month it was. From September 28 to October 29 KISS recorded "Rock And Roll Over", did the famous KISSmas photo session for Creem magazine and filmed The Paul Lynde Halloween Special.

A huge and heartfelt thank you to Scott Davis for his AMAZING layout and design work. Scott, you're my hero and I truly appreciate your help with getting this done in a rush.

Here are some examples of the kind of information and photos you can expect in "MAGIC":

1) This photo features all four KISS members without makeup posing with two of the most important members of The Original KISS Krew, JR Smalling and Mick Campise. The photo was most likely taken in February or March 1976 in either Hawaii, California or Florida. Though the photographer is unknown the photo comes from the collection of Karen Kubena whose family was close to Mick Campise. According to Karen, Mick would sometimes stay at her families house in Houston, Texas while he was off the road.

It is possible that this image and a few others I will post soon may be used in the upcoming KISS film documentary "You Wanted The Best, You Got The Best". I served as photo research assistant for that film and I'm very excited to see it finally released later this year.

2) As it's clear there are still many mysteries and much confusion regarding certain specific events in KISS' history (KISStory, of course), my book will address these questions and provide hard evidence and thorough research to reach the most accurate and reliable conclusion.

So, Here's the breakdown concerning the San Diego/Los Angeles/wet hair/water bucket/sweat/fake blood/make up variations debacle.

1. There is no evidence to support the claim that Gene's hair caught fire at the Aug. 19 San Diego show. Please see the photo collage below showing Gene before, during and after breathing fire with no sign of his hair on fire.

Gene's hair not catching fire in San Diego, August 19, 1977

2. There is no evidence to support the claim that a roadie put out the alleged hair fire with a bucket of water. Please see the same photo collage as above. The standard method for extinguishing the fire is a wet towel. This has been confirmed by photographic evidence as well as reports by past roadies. Also, there is photographic evidence that Gene's hair did not become wet until late in the set list and Firehouse is only the 4th song in the set, God of Thunder is 12th. There are two more logical and likely explanations for Gene's wet hair: 1) Sweat from a particularly energetic performance and possibly a warmer than normal venue (there is photographic evidence from other concerts where Gene's hair is very wet with sweat - please see photos below). 2) Gene may have poured a cup of water on his own head to cool down, for effect or just for fun. A cup, not a bucket, and not while holding his bass which could easily malfunction if water got into the electronics. The "water bucket to put out hair fire" theory is completely contrary to all evidence.

3. Though it is clear that the blood in the Gene photo from Alive II was enhanced, there is photographic evidence that the blood DID actually splatter on his face, forehead and under his right eye. Please see the photo collage below comparing the Alive II photo to other untouched photos from the San Diego concert.

Gene's blood splattered face August 19, 1977 San Diego

4. Gene did NOT wear the horns for the San Diego show. In fact, Gene only wore the horns twice for the entire Love Gun/Alive II tours: 1) at the staged photo session taken in San Diego on the afternoon before the concert later that night, August 19, 1977. REPEAT - Gene did NOT wear the horns for the actual San Diego concert, just the photo session earlier that afternoon. 2) August 27, 1977 Los Angeles, second night of the 3 nights at the LA Forum. This is the same night as the "Land of Hype and Glory" live and backstage footage, but not the interview and photo session footage which was filmed on November 9, 1977 in Newburgh, New York.

5. Gene changed his make up for the San Diego concert as well as the photo session that afternoon. He did NOT change it for the LA shows as Gene has claimed in the past. Reminder - please do not take anything Gene has to say about historical details as reliable information. I've said it before and here I go again, Gene is wrong WAY more than he is right when recounting dates/locations for KISS. Please see the photo collage below for a detailed comparison of all four nights in question.

Hopefully, that can help clear up some of the confusion.

3) This is a never before published photo of 3/4 of KISS hanging out in a hotel room with 2/3 of Rush sometime in November 1975.

A few points of interest:
1. Peter seems to be wearing women's open toed shoes and a night gown (the same gown seen in a photo session from July 1975 with Christopher Makos). Peter's also letting you know how he feels about your opinions on his evening attire.
2. Paul looks like the ultimate rock star even just hanging out in a hotel. Love the white boots and cut off jean jacket.
3. Gene is wearing his standard issue "dollar sign" boots, a black silk robe and what looks like blue shades in the shape of Texas. I'm not certain if that's a party favor hanging out of his mouth.
4. Geddy Lee is wearing his influences proudly with a Yes shirt.
5. Who knows what Alex may be hiding behind that chair.

Though the photographer is unknown the photo comes from the collection of Karen Kubena whose family was close to Mick Campise. According to Karen, Mick would sometimes stay at her families house in Houston, Texas while he was off the road.

Risks and challenges

My challenge will be licensing the large number of photos for the book and then choosing which ones not to include. I am 100% committed to making this book as visually stunning as possible and as a KISS photo collector/researcher for 30+ years I feel I am uniquely qualified for this task.

Also, some people have expressed concern about whether or not KISS will try to stop the book from being published because it's not an official KISS product. I have researched this subject thoroughly and my legal counsel has assured me that as long as I don't use the KISS logo or trademarked makeup designs on the cover I am within my legal right to publish this book. Therefore, I will be sure to choose a cover design that will in no way put me at any legal risk. The artwork and design used for this Kickstarter campaign is NOT the cover of the book.
