With over 300 species in the wild, parrots are some of the most vibrant and amazing avians on earth. In this deck, 54 of those species are on display in full, brilliant color. Each card in the deck features a unique species, making this an art deck unlike any other.
I have always been fascinated by birds, and parrots in particular, having had a parrot in my life and on my shoulder since I was a young girl. My idea for the deck came about last year when I was commissioned for 10 small parrot portraits - I thought those little images would look fantastic on playing cards, so I began the task of illustrating the rest of the deck.
The suits are divided by scientific families - cockatoos for the hearts, lories and lorikeets for the diamonds, conures for the clubs, and macaws for the spades. Together, they represent four diverse families in the Psittacine order. The two jokers will be represented by the budgerigar, the most widely kept pet parrot in the world, and the comical white bellied caique.
This deck can be used as a traditional deck of playing cards, as a conversation piece, or even as a tool to help you learn some of the different species of parrot. They also make a wonderful gift for the parrot lover in your life.
Here's where you come in
I have everything prepared, from the art to digital files, all ready to be sent to the printer. But I don't have the funds, and the only way this deck can be printed is through everyone on Kickstarter.
With your help, this art deck can become a reality.
What you get
The most obvious reward is the deck! It contains 56 cards in total: 13 suit cards of each of the 4 suits, 2 jokers, and 2 additional cards detailing each species of parrot by common and scientific name. The deck will be full color, with custom pips and a custom back. They will be printed by Quality Playing Cards & Games (unless the stretch goal for USPCC has been reached) on 310 gsm paper with a custom tuck box. The cards will be poker sized (2.5"x3.5")
Additional rewards available include a 51* page hardcover book printed in color which will contain full sized illustrations of each parrot, full sized (4x6) prints of the parrots, original artwork, and custom artwork created just for you.
*the pledge tier for the book has an incorrect page count. The book is 51 pages long!
Increase your pledge for additional rewards:
$10 for each additional deck (+$2 international shipping)
$5 for each additional print (+$2 international shipping)
$25 for an uncut sheet of cards (+$20 international shipping)
$35 for each additional art book (+$10 international shipping)
$60 for each additional half brick of 6 decks (+$20 international shipping)
$100 for each additional brick of 12 decks (+$25 international shipping)
$5000 - Deck gets printed!
$10000 - Magnets! How do they work? One magnet will be included in every order!
$15000 - Stickers! A sheet of 4 stickers in every order!
$28000 - This is ridiculous. How many people love parrots?! Printing at USPCC (Why is this goal so high? More for a space than a money issue - USPCC demands a minimum print run of 2500 decks and I don't have space to store so much stuff.)
Risks and challenges
Though this is my first Kickstarter project, I have both participated in other card deck projects, and orchestrated my own, all of which delivered on time. I'm a graphic artist by trade and have a great deal of experience working with printers.
The artwork is completely done and set up for printing, and I expect on receiving funding to be able to promptly send the project to print, which will take 6-8 weeks according to the printer's own estimates. Barring any major catastrophes, I expect decks to be in hands by the middle of the year. (July/August)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
