Development Update #14: The state of things

Greetings backers,

Well, it’s the end the the month and as promised here is an update on where things are at and what has been going on with World Engine. A little while back the team got together and took a long hard look at the state of World Engine and where it needed to go in the coming months. After some discussion, we all came to the same conclusion; World Engine, at its core, has some issues that we simply cannot code around. These issues would require us to tear down a lot of what we have already built and, this being the case, we decided to think a bit more out of the box. In the end, we decided that if we were going to have to make such wide, sweeping, changes we may as well create the project in a system that gave us more flexibility.

So, today we would like to tell you that we are currently in the process of transitioning what you currently see in World Engine into a Unity 2018 project. I am sure the next question is why the change. One of the big struggles for our development team was working with systems that we are not that familiar with. Javascript, HTML, and CSS are not languages that we are used to working with which was causing us to learn as we code and therefore slowing us down. Unity and C# are systems that we are very familiar with and have used extensively so creating content going forward will be easier and faster.

Obviously, with a change of this nature, there is going to be some extra time needed to get the project back to where it is today. This transition is already underway and moving along nicely. What follows is a rough outline of how we plan to move the project forward in the coming months.

Phase 1: September - October

  • Authentication module
  • Updated backend datastore module
  • Content creation/distribution module
  • UI Framework
  • Save/Load module
  • Pen tool module
  • Roller/Tile module
  • Layer module
  • Selection tool module

 Phase 2:

  • Eyedropper module
  • Undo/Redo module
  • Library and Palette module
  • UI for above modules
  • Shapes module
  • Eraser module

 Phase 3

  • Flood fill module
  • Airbrush module
  • Additional paint tools added
  • Additional layer tools added

Just to reiterate, this is a rough outline and will likely change as things progress. Moving forward, we plan to get updates to our backers more frequently with a bare minimum of once a month.
