Frequently Asked Questions
World Engine will be subscription based because we want it to be a map maker that keeps getting better. Here are the benefits to having a subscription:
- We’ll be adding new tools and features on a continual basis
- You will have a large library of art assets at your disposal (tiles, textures, objects and more) to build your maps – with more added regularly
- You can use World Engine on multiple personal devices right from your browser – there is nothing to download or install
- You’ll always have the latest version – there are no version upgrades to buy
- You can keep your maps no matter what (they’ll be available in your account vault for export, even if your subscription ends).
- Any content you buy in the marketplace is yours to keep and use.
We know some of you are skeptical of subscription models – and we understand your reservations. But we are committed to making World Engine the best RPG map maker around as well as one that works for both desktop and tablets. We believe World Engine will be a better product if we can continually release new features, tools and content as they are ready instead of waiting two or three years between standalone versions.Last updated:
Yes! You can link to tiles, textures, maps and other assets stored on popular cloud services (e.g. DropBox, Box, Google Drive, OneDrive, etc.) to include in your maps. Asset files can be in .png, .jpg, or .bmp format.Last updated:
The simple answer is "Yes” but with some caveats. Individual artists will have the ability to supply End User License Agreements (EULA) to you as map builders. Each EULA will detail the artist’s specific limitations and restrictions on commercial use. You will be required to agree to the artist’s EULA prior to acquiring access to the specific assets.
In addition to the EULA, we will be tagging content for quick sorting in the Library and on your Palette. These tags will include Commercial, Personal, Commercial with Grant entries. If you attempt to export a map containing assets using the Commercial or Commercial with Grant tags, World Engine will notify you of the tag and point out which asset(s) are responsible for the warning. In the case of a Commercial with Grant we will provide contact information for the vendor to assist in your acquisition of a valid grant. Assets marked as Commercial or Personal will not require additional action.Last updated:
You own and will retain access to the maps you create as per the artist’s EULA for the assets used. Maps you create will be stored for the life of the application and will be recovered from the archive when an account is reactivated. Unarchived maps will use save slots up to the available slots for the renewed account. Any maps that exceed this total will remain archived until slots are available. While an account is inactive there are two methods to access maps you’ve created in World Engine.
1.) If you have been a subscriber for at least 6 months and allow your subscription to lapse, we will archive your maps in a read-only state which allows you to load them and export them using World Engine. (We are still determining if there will be limited editor access to these archived maps from within World Engine while in a non-subscribed state).
2.) You can export a flattened map at whatever resolution you would like to keep for personal archival purposes prior to your account expiration. These flattened exports can be PNG/JPG and at the maximum resolution your account provides. Keep in mind that World Engine allows for you to add your own art as assets through a cloud service. Doing so would allow you to later edit using the flattened map as a base.Last updated:
Your maps will be there waiting for you! If your subscription lapses, your maps will be archived for future edits (if you later renew) or available for print and export in the meantime. We will even provide a limited tool selection which will allow for basic edits to the archived maps. Keep in mind that this version will have limited save slots and functionality, so not every feature and tool will be at your disposal. But the important thing is that you won’t lose your map or any content that you purchased from the marketplace.
Here’s an example to illustrate how this would work:
Let’s say you have World Engine Pro and you have several maps. At some point, you get busy and stop gaming as frequently, so you end your subscription or let it expire. If you log into World Engine at that point, your maps will be stored in a read-only vault. You can load, export or print any of them.
Now let’s assume you want to make some edits, but you aren’t ready to re-subscribe. No problem! You can use a limited version of World Engine, make a copy of a map from your archive, and make some changes. You can use any tile, texture or tool provided in this limited version or already owned by you to modify the map. However, any tools, tiles or textures that were part of the Pro version remain locked since you are no longer an active subscriber at that tier. The limited version will provide enough free tools that you are able to make some simple edits and export the map for use in your preferred VTT or for print.
A couple months later, you start gaming again and you decide to re-subscribe to World Engine. All your maps move from your archive to your re-activated account. You can now pick right up where you left off.
Worth noting, the archive also works to handle maps which would exceed a downgraded subscription level. If you have 5 more maps then are allowed for your subscription, those 5 would go into the archive but could be pulled down into your active maps when you have the extra space.Last updated:
Yes! Backers will be able to shift their subscription level and keep their Kickstarter discounts. For example, Surveyor, Topographer and Cartographer level backers can move up and down the subscription tiers in the future and keep the exclusive Kickstarter rate. Similarly, if you were to back at the Ultimate Topographer level (which is lifetime Pro), you could contact us to upgrade to Ultimate Cartographer (lifetime VIP). Note that the lifetime backer levels (Ultimate Topographer and Ultimate Cartographer) are ONLY available through this Kickstarter and will not be offered when World Engine goes live. We appreciate the support of all our backers and want to give them as much flexibility as we reasonably can.Last updated:
Yes! The maps created by World Engine are saved out in standard graphic formats, which are easily imported into D20PRO and other popular virtual tabletops as well as campaign management tools. Additionally, maps can be exported at controlled sizes and grid resolutions, so you know exactly what you’re getting in the final output.Last updated:
Several things. World Engine is available in browser, meaning you do not have to download or upgrade any software. It’s available for both desktop and mobile, so you can use it anywhere, anytime. World Engine includes mixing of pre-built tiles with freehand drawing, made from its extensive and powerful Draw Tools. It uses the same principals as many dedicated graphic editing tools and software, such as GIMP, Photoshop and Illustrator, but without the need for pro-level graphic design skills--it’s super easy to use!Last updated:
What is the difference between the content included in the Standard, Pro and VIP libraries versions?
The Standard tier provides access to a large library of over 100 assets including tiles, textures and objects. Pro subscribers will have immediate access to an additional 150, a total of over 250, assets. VIP subscribers get a massive 500-plus assets at their fingertips. Assets will vary in style and genre providing a wide selection of art to start building with right away!Last updated:
Premium content refers to licensed content from vendors who elect not to include their assets in the World Engine content library and instead require that their art be separately purchased or used only under limited license. This scenario is hypothetical at this point -- we hope to make as much art available at each tier as possible! We built the “premium art” concept into the system to allow future “big name” vendors or “celebrity” artists to join World Engine without violating their existing policies.
VIP subscribers will have special VIP-only offers on Premium content. These may take the form of monthly specials or a flat discount on specific brands. We’ll be subsidizing these offers as a thank-you to our VIP community!Last updated:
By backing this Kickstarter, you permanently lock in exclusive low subscription rates reserved for backers. For example, if you back at the Early Bird Surveyor level to get World Engine Standard for $21, your renewal rate for a 6-month subscription is locked in at $21 permanently (normally $30).Last updated:
At present, World Engine is being developed for online use. However, a WebView version of World Engine for offline use is on the roadmap after the full product launch in Summer 2017.Last updated:
Yes to both! The Kickstarter 6-month rates are a deeper discount than will be offered to post-Kickstarter subscribers at any subscription term. Please note, VIP will only be available in 6-month and 12-month subscription terms.Last updated:
