About

BEGINNINGS

  • First, my friend Drew Gorospe and I co-choreographed a piece called NOTHING. We organized a group of our peers at Cornish College of the Arts, and put together some original choreography to be shown at Base: Experimental Arts and Space in the show CHIC QUICHE.
  • This collaboration in January 2019 was based off our own improvisation and interpreted by the four dancers.  Our process  felt unfinished, so I asked Drew if she would work with me again on this short film.

WHAT IS THIS FILM ABOUT?!

  • I would like to make a film showing queer bodies in different stages of self. They would embody grief, mourning, community, empowerment, ecstasy, and mischievousness, especially in context of post-death. Explorations of these sentiments will take form by characterization of mythical beings.
  • With direction by dramaturg Brooke Morrison, movement artists would act as banshees (spirits who wail near the place where a loved one will soon die), Aphroditus (essentially, a transgender version of Greek goddess Aphrodite), and elves (spritely, mischievous creatures with magical powers, in human form).
  • Though their movements would take on the distinct personalities of each character -  the dancers’ dress and personal context would be current. We envision queer fashion styles including safety pin accessories and leather garments.

WHY A FILM?

  • Film gives the viewer a chance to see through the eyes of the filmmaker. In dance film, camera movement is just as choreographic as the dancer's movement, so a seated audience is taken closer to the limbs and essence of dancers. This medium allows us to experience dance in a unique setting; for us it would be in a wide field surrounded by satellite technology, at sunrise.
  • With a film, the viewer could feel what it’s like to grieve, find consolation, and relish in that - but in a particularly intimate way.

WHY SUPPORT IT?

  • These funds will go primarily toward paying the artists involved. If we exceed our goal at all it will pay for costuming materials as well as a stipend for myself. Our hope is that we can achieve this goal by November 10th, after our shoot date of November 3rd.
  • You need to support this film in order to support queer professional artists!! Not only do these artists each have years of training and degrees in their artform, but also we all bring a different perspective to this project - whether that is through dance, music, theatre, or dance film.
  • It is worth it to support a`group of individuals with diverse backgrounds and distinct voices who are all joining to make a relevant piece of art.

HOW WILL WE MAKE IT HAPPEN?

  • What doesn’t come from YOU, will come out of my pocket and the artist’s kind hearts. After three rehearsals throughout October to review the choreography from our previous piece, collaborators Drew Gorospe, Devin Muñoz, Kaiya Holtzman, Alyssa Mastropieri, and Reid Rayfield will collectively take a ferry to Vashon Island, and visit the field where the film is set. After spending the night in a cozy yurt, we will rise and shine to begin filming around sunrise, ideally surrounded by autumn fog.
  • Our amazing videographer Devin will shoot on a digital film camera, while another set of footage will be shot a VCR camera by multimedia artist and Vashon local Ethan DeLorenzo. Post shoot, footage will be edited by yours truly, as well as Devin, and released as soon as a month later. Some of your funds will go toward the cost of Adobe: Premiere Pro too!

WHAT COMES NEXT?

  • Next, our goal is to share this film with the wider world! We plan on sending it out to film festivals in the United States and Canada, in hopes of having it shown in various locations and contexts. Your donation to this project gets us one step closer to our ideal goal!
  • THANK YOU for your tremendous support, and for taking the time to read about our project. We can't wait to show you the results!

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenge with this kind of project is getting financial support from friends and family. We are hoping that by launching this Kickstarter and educating the community of artist-supporters around us, this project will reach its monetary goal. For projects to be a priority for artists, we need incentive - some $$$ will help that. Another difficulty is finding how to best reach YOU for your support. Is it Facebook? Instagram? Email? Let me know in the comments. AND feel free to email me any questions you have at maevehaselton@gmail.com.
