After a long process of designing and prototyping, we are proud to announce the latest addition to the MAEN collection, the Skymaster 38 Automatic Chronograph! At MAEN we are passionate about chronograph watches as few other watch functions integrate mechanics to its design as convincingly as the chronograph.
We especially appreciate vintage sized chronographs, as it is much more challenging to get a balanced chronograph dial in a smaller diameter watch, but when done right it becomes all the more interesting. This is exactly what we tried to achieve with the Skymaster 38, a balanced, vintage inspired chronograph with a sophisticated yet powerful appearance.
With its modest size of 38mm, narrow bezel and vintage styled rehaut the Skymaster is a real eyecatcher. As always, beauty lies in the details. The indicators are for example brushed with a polished beveled edge, playing with the light in a very interesting way.
The Skymaster 38 houses the high-quality Swiss Made ETA 2894-2 Automatic movement and has a 12H GMT bi-directional bezel to keep track of an additional timezone.
The Skymaster 38 collection consists of 5 different color variants, each giving the watch a different look, but keeping in line with the unique character of the Skymaster 38. We did our best to create a vintage vibe, inspired from chronograph watches from the 1960's and 70's, with modern touches to it. While designing and producing the Skymaster we put a lot of time and effort in making sure the watch is up to the highest standards.
We have taken into account all feedback from backers of our previous Kickstarter campaign, the Hudson Automatic, and made sure to invest extra time and money in critical parts.
The Skymaster 38 was born out of our love for vintage chronograph watches. We appreciate watches that effortlessly combine elegance with functionality and that is also what we wanted to achieve with the Skymaster 38.
The Skymaster 38 is a very versatile watch that will look good on any occasion. It has a balanced design and symmetrical 3-6-9 sub-dial layout, which characterizes the look of many vintage chronographs. The chronograph does not only look cool, it is also a very useful tool that can come in handy when you quickly need to time an event.
The watch has many vintage features such as the long lug to lug height, narrow bezel, oversized subdials and box domed glass. The Skymaster 38 comes standard with box domed hesalite glass. This gives the watch a nice vintage look while still showing the dial from many angles.
After many requests we have also decided to offer a sapphire glass option. Please note that box domed sapphire glass is much more expensive to produce than hesalite glass. So this explains the extra fee of EUR 59,- The sapphire glass will have a double layer of Anti Reflective (AR) coating on the inside to reduce reflections.
Below are some pros and cons regarding hesalite vs sapphire glass. It is up to you to decide what you find more important!
-Distortion and slight optical cloudiness give the dial a "warmer" and/or vintage look
-Scratches can be polished out much easier
-Replacement cost compared to sapphire much lower
-Watch has a lower price
-Picks up scratches easier
-More distortion and less optical clarity
-Much harder material, scratches much less likely
-Sapphire adds less distortion and is optically clearer than hesalite
-Easier to chip and/or crack than hesalite
-Scratches that might arise are much harder to get out
-Replacement cost of crystal is much higher in the unlikely case you need to replace it
-Slightly heavier on the wrist
-Watch has a higher price
The backside of the Skymaster 38 has a minimalistic and clean design that does not distract the eye from the beautiful ETA 2984 movement. The caseback is equipped with a sapphire glass allowing you to see the movement in all its glory.
The Skymaster 38 will come standard on an Arizona top grain black leather strap with white contrasting stitching.
If you wish to include a stainless steel bracelet with the Skymaster 38 you can increase your pledge with EUR 69,- and we will include this bracelet with your order.
Our 5-link stainless steel bracelet has solid end links, tapers from 20-16mm and comes with an engraved deployant clasp. The bracelet has a satin brushed finish that matches very elegantly with the inner lugs and gives the watch a sporty yet refined look.
Designing the dial was a big challenge for us. We had to make sure it was aesthetically pleasing while still very readable. The Skymaster is equiped with ''oversized'' subdials to enhance the vintage look but also the readability. Each subdial is highly detailed with a nice radial finish. The applied hour markers have a brushed finish with a polished beveled edge and are well raised on the dial.
The case of the Skymaster 38 has many refined details that make it interesting to look at from different angles. The lugs are relatively long with their 46mm lug to lug length, giving the watch a good wrist presence. The side of the case and inside of the lugs have a nice satin brushed finish, while the top of the lugs have a polished finish. This creates a beautiful and subtle contrast. We decided to go for drilled lugs to make it easier to change straps and to enhance the vintage look. The pushers and crown are polished to create a nice contrast with the satin brushed side of the case.
An invaluable travel companion that is easy-to-use and gives you the time in two different time zones simultaneously is a GMT scale on the bezel. The Skymaster 38 is equipped with a 12H GMT bi-directional bezel making it easy to keep track of a second time zone.
We think that proportions are one of the key factors that make a watch. While designing the Skymaster one of our goals was to create a slim automatic chronograph. The case of the Skymaster measures only 10,9mm and including the domed hesalite crystal the watch is only 12,9mm thick. This results in a very sleek watch, especially with the long sharp lugs.
The 2894-2 is the ETA chronograph movement based on the 2892-A2. Even equipped with these upgrades, the movement is no higher than 6.1 millimeters. The 2894-2 is, when directly compared to the ETA Valjoux 7750, the more modern and more complex interpretation of a very reliable chronograph movement. The automatic caliber has 37 jewels and as expected of ETA, a Swiss lever escapement as a regulator.
The movement we will use for the Skymaster 38 is the Elaboré version in nickel finish (not pictured above). The movement pictured above is a fully decorated TOP grade movement with blue screws. We might offer the possibility to upgrade to this version, but we cannot guarantee this at this stage as we need to wait for confirmation regarding availability and minimum order quantities.
Due to the thin size of the movement we managed to get the thickness of the case to only 10.9mm and including the hesalite crystal only 12,9mm!
Please note that the Skymaster 38 will have a ghost position on the crown, as we have decided to omit the date window for aesthetic reasons.
The Skymaster 38 will be Swiss Made and will be assembled in Ticino, Switzerland. Waterproof testing, entrance inspection and final quality control will also be performed in Switzerland. The Swiss Made ETA 2894-2 movement will be passing tests to certify the precision of the movement. This movement has 37 jewels, a power-reserve of around 48 hours and is equipped with the ETA-Chron regulator system for easy regulation.
The Swiss Made label is a representation of the ultimate sign of quality - the perfect combination of function and design.
MAEN was founded by two Dutchmen. They have always been fascinated by the story of New York City. In 1626, the island of Manhattan was renamed to New Amsterdam after it was discovered by captain Hudson on the Dutch ship the Halve Maen (‘Half Moon’).
The Netherlands is a small country with a global reach and entrepreneurial spirit. Long ago the Dutch conquered the sea and sailed all over the world; they travelled around the Cape to Indonesia and crossed the Atlantic to New York and Surinam.
When the sea wasn’t big enough anymore the air was the next frontier. The Dutch pioneering mentality brought The Netherlands the first European Air Service to the United States. On 21 May 1946, KLM was the first continental European airline to start scheduled transatlantic flights between Amsterdam and New York City.
The Skymaster 38 is a tribute to this iconic flight and is named after the aircraft used, the Douglas DC-4 Skymaster.
STEP 1: Backing our Kickstarter project is very simple. For now the only thing to decide on is if you prefer 1 or 2 watches. Once decided pick the cheapest available reward and you are done!
STEP 2: Once you have backed our project you are ready and can start thinking about what dial you prefer. After our campaign has been closed we will send you a survey where you will be able to select the dial of your choice.
Below you can see the production schedule we aim to follow. We are doing our best to stick as close as possible to these dates, but there can always be unexpected delays. Especially the sourcing of the movement could cause potential delays due to the uncertain lead times. Please keep this in mind and understand that we are doing everything we can to deliver as fast as possible.
Please note that in order to qualify for a VAT refund you will need to send in your survey + address details latest by October 7. Surveys that will be submitted after this date will not qualify for a VAT refund.
Risks and challenges
We are an established company and have been shipping watches to consumers in over 50 countries. For more than 4 years now we have been in contact with different assembling and manufacturing companies to make sure that we found the right partner for us. We are happy to announce that we have found a production partner for the Skymaster that really understands our needs. We are very picky when it comes to small details, such as the click mechanism of the bezel, sharpness of lugs, brushing on the case etc. Our current partner has been in the business for over 16 years and works with many other known Swiss Made watch companies. We have been working intensively with them and we are really satisfied with our collaboration. This means that we are confident that we will be able to start shipping as scheduled and that the product will be of the highest standards. We do have the responsibility though to warn you that delays in the production process might happen. We will keep you updated if there are any changes and we will always be here to answer any questions you might have.
We have shown prototypes of the Skymaster 38 to many watch connoisseurs, journalists and enthusiasts to get feedback about the watches, straps and packaging. We gathered an incredible amount of valuable feedback and this feedback was incorporated in the final version of the watch.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the project from the start and to all our backers!
