About

Self-Made is a documentary about community workshop spaces called Fabrication Labs, where a person can make almost anything, from furniture to computer code, utilizing shared tools, machinery, and a member-driven, open-source knowledge base.

Madison and Miriam, two adventurous Millennials from the mountains of Colorado, will bicycle from Copenhagen to Barcelona in the summer of 2015, to explore the European Fab Lab movement. Copenhagen is famous for its dedication to urban sustainability and Barcelona pledged this July to be the first Fab City, fully sustainable within forty years. Bold frontiers are opening up in DIY manufacturing, with a dramatic new approach to STEM education. Fab Labs test the potential of exciting new technologies.

Over the course of four months, Madison and Miriam will travel through six countries to visit around thirty Fab Labs. In August they will return to the United States to attend Fab11 in Boston, the 11th international digital fabrication conference.

Madison will begin editing footage in August 2015, with the goal of wrapping post production in early 2016.

Self-Made will tell the story of people with world-altering, totally possible projects--the story of sustainable industry.

Risks and challenges

MadRim Productions has already been hard at work investigating Fab Labs and the maker movement, so we've had ample time to identify where our understanding lacks. Neither of us comes from a background in technology or manufacturing, so we are effectively researching a documentary about a completely foreign topic.

Fortunately, everyone we've encountered in the movement has been overwhelmingly positive and encouraging. We've received help and instruction from the wonderful individuals involved with local Colorado maker spaces and have already learned more about digital fabrication than we ever thought possible. We look forward to developing our already established contact with European Fab Labs.

We are fully invested in this documentary and have no other side projects. In fact, we believe so strongly in our project that we are relocating to Europe in January to continue our research of Fab Labs and the maker movement from the front lines. Our bike tour does not begin until April, so we will use the intervening three months to visit Labs not along our route, to promote our project, and to continue meeting and developing friendships with the amazing people working with digital fabrication.
