Pocket Ballpark - baseball card game.

I wanted to create a game for teaching my sons the basics of baseball, around the same time I saw the GenCant contest for creating a game with only 18 cards. Our game submission didn't win but we felt we were onto something so we improved the game by adding additional cards for scorekeeping and for keeping track of the pitch count. We passed a few prototypes around to neighborhood kids and the feedback was universally positive. So we've decided to do the next step and publish the game! Baseball & board games are great past-times and here's a chance to put them both together!

Pocket Ballpark™ is a 2-player baseball card game with a 1-player variant. It is aimed at the ages of 7 and up. Playing time is around 20 minutes for a 3-inning game. Each player plays a pitch and a batter card - the total of the numbers on the cards determines the outcome of each play. Players can strategize by keeping track of what cards their opponent has played, as well as taking advantage of opportunities to steal bases. The game comes with 4 base cards, 2 outcome table cards, 7 pitch cards, 7 batter cards, 2 score cards, and 1 count tracking card.

The game was created by Robert Bruce & Jayce White.

Father Geek - Child Geek Approved!

"If you like baseball, are a fan of card games, like playing games on the go and on demand whenever you feel like it regardless of your geographical location, then do consider picking up Pocket Ballpark. Its simple approach is a fun mix of random outcomes, hand management, and logical thinking. It just might be a home run for you and yours."

Open Seat Gaming - Fluffy Meeply

"Pocket Ballpark takes the tension of a baseball game and makes it into a light, fun game that young sports enthusiasts can enjoy, and we’d definitely recommend it for sports-loving families with children."

The Setup

Place the 4 Base cards in the shape of a baseball diamond with home plate on the bottom Place an Outcome card and a Score card in front of each player. Place the Pitch Count card where both players can see it. Use coins or other markers to keep track of the score & pitch count (not included). The players will decide how many innings they will play in a game. Three innings works best for a first game. The players will also name their teams. For simplicity, we will refer to each team as Team A and Team B. The younger player will join Team A as the pitcher to start. The pitcher will hold the 7 Pitch cards in their hand. The older player will join Team B and hold the 7 Batter cards. Team B will go to bat first

The Play

Each player selects a card from their hand and places their card face up at the same time. The sum of the two cards will determine the outcome of the pitch. The pitcher will discard their card. The batter will discard their card unless they are able to get on base. In that case, their card is flipped over and a runner is revealed. For example, if the pitcher throws a Fastball (e.g.plays a 6) and the batter plays a 5; the sum of the cards is 11. Using the Outcome card, the players determine that the batter has hit a single. The pitcher discards their card to the Team A discard pile. The batter flips over their card to reveal a runner and, in this example, ‘runs’ from home plate to first base. The runner remains on first base.

Players continue to play their cards until their hand is empty. Once their hand is empty, they reshuffle the cards in their discard pile and add them back to their hand and continue playing. This continues until Team B has 3 outs.

The play follows standard baseball rules. Three strikes mean the batter is out. Three outs mean the Teams switch roles; Team B goes up to pitch and Team A goes to bat. Once Team B has 3 outs, the inning is over.

A Hit! If a batter hits the ball, he becomes a runner and makes his way to the appropriate base as per the Outcome card. A Foul! Fouls count as strikes but you cannot be struck out on a foul ball.

A Walk! If a player receives 4 balls, the batter becomes a runner but ‘walks’ to first base.

A Run! A run is scored if a runner makes it all the way to home plate. Once a runner reaches home plate, they are added to the discard pile of the batting team.

Stealing Bases – The player on the batting team can attempt to have one of their runners steal a base. They just need to declare that they are stealing a base and the players determine whether the runner advances or is out. If successful, they can move their runner to the next base. A player cannot steal home.

The Win - At the end of the last inning, whoever has the most runs wins the game. In the event of a tie, the players can choose to play extra innings until the tie is broken.

One Player Variation - Pick a side, for the other team, shuffle their cards place face down. Pull one card at a time to determine the other team’s card. Instead of playing all the cards as in the two-player game, reshuffle the opponent deck when there is one card remaining.

Risks and challenges

This is the first Kickstarter project for Mad Packs Games so we expect there will be some learning along the way. We have a lined up reputable printers, fulfillment partners and the art is essentially complete - however its possible for issues to happen during the production / shipping phases.

We'll do our best to incorporate feedback from our backers into the project.

Due to the game being about baseball, we're expect most of backers will likely be from the USA / Canada, you will be responsible for any taxes and duties for other countries. Should we get a reasonable number of backers overseas we'll investigate European friendly fulfillment partners at that time.
