We're pretty sure we can program the disc so that it can seamlessly play any variant video. We have enough space for the MX23 Part 2 International edition in proper HD, so we don't anticipate any problems here.

    2. James Carlson 4 days ago

Hey Robert! Hope to join up and help contribute to this. With the possible inclusions of The the Streamline dub of Megazone 23 Part I and the Manga Entertainment English dub of Megazone 23 Part III, will they be seperate from the two main versions in standard def to save space? Cause if so, that's just awesome (Just be awesome to watch the original versions)

    3. Robert J Woodhead 5-time creator 6 days ago

Thanks for the comments, we are working on seeing if they are feasible.

Hi Robert. Do u have any cells from Megazone which u can offer as a reward signed by one of the artists??

    5. FM on

Can you get Toshihiro Hirano involved? He was a character designer on Megazone 23 along with Mikimoto. Intend to back the Pearlescent Patron as of now. But adding Hirano would be awesome!! Please keep us posted. Thanks for all of your dedication and hardwork. Cheers!

We tend to upgrade the packaging more organically rather than saying specifically "we'll add X". Sometimes stuff like foil doesn't make sense given the way the packaging evolves. Basically, if the project does well, there'll be budget for a lot of little tiny improvements and upgrades, most of which we'll just do and not even mention.

    8. Robert J Woodhead 5-time creator on

      Noted.

    9. Robert J Woodhead 5-time creator on

We are considering this. We've done it before with mixed results.

    11. Jake Grantz on

I'd still really like to see a stretch goal that puts foil lettering on the chipboard box. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, and could just be the title letters of the main logo even =)

    12. Mel Danes on

+1 for a first that includes the soundtracks. I know licensing them is a different beast but it would really make this a complete collection. Thank you for doing this at all. I so wanted to get the Japanese BD collection, but the expense was prohibitive.

    13. Zack K on

How about some social media goals? For example what they did with the Firmament kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1252280491/firmament/posts/2478667

I think you should include pictures of what an "Amaray Case" looks like, maybe pics from another campaign.

However the disc is configured internally, as played, the various versions will be in their original presentation. If we can do it in a way that saves bits so we can up the encoding bitrate, we'll do it, but we won't sacrifice content or reliability.

    16. Megazone 23 on

Hello, please, please keep the all version of Megazone 23 separate. The international edition has edited footage, different dialogue that changes context and story line. All parts should be presented in full for everyone to enjoy given how they were introduced to the series. If I have to give up a physical reward for extra disc for space then I can live with that. Thank you

Please do everything in your power to get those Streamline and Manga dubs! To make the "true Omega Edition."

    18. Robert J Woodhead 5-time creator on

The original Japanese release was on 4 BD25. We are planning on 2 BD50 so we have the same number of bits to work with. It's on my to-do list to see if I can combine MZ23 II and the international edition to save some bits, but it may be more difficult than you think, because there are almost certainly differences at the reel-change points and if the dub audio crosses those points, conforming them may not be possible.

Bit of history for you here: these films were produced on film, and film comes in reels of ~18 minutes or so. At the point where the reels change, there's a moment where the audio goes to nothing, and the image is usually either a fade down (on one reel) and fade up (on the other), or a jump cut, usually to a difference scene.

When shown in the theatre back in the day, there's actually two projectors, and the projectionist gets the second one running in sync with the first (the dots you sometimes see for a frame in the top-right corner of an old film help them do this), and then cuts between them at the right moment - and this is why live audio doesn't cross reel boundaries, because the crossover is dones manually, so the timing is never exact.

More recently, films would be delivered to the theatre in reels and then edited together onto a big platter, but the problem of audio at the splice points remains, it's just that the edit is fixed for that particular showing. When the film's run was done, it was cut back into individual reels again!

When a film is transferred to video, the individual reels are telecine'd, and then edited together. Since the audio doesn't cross reel boundaries, it's a simple edit. However, two different transfers might have different edit points. Usually they are only off by a frame or two, but sometimes it can be more - there's one in MZ23 I that's 73 frames different (!!) between the DVD telecine and the Blu-ray telecine.

This wouldn't be a big deal as long as no audio ever crosses these reel boundaries. Unfortunately, when dubbing for video release, being silent over a reel change isn't a consideration because there aren't any; you're creating audio for a single chunk of video. So it's possible -- even likely -- that the dub audio will cross reel boundaries.

This makes life tricky, because what do you do if your new HD transfer has a different number from a particular reel than the DVD transfer, but the dub has audio going through that transition? Fixing that requires some careful editing of the video and audio, but it can be done.

But the real killer is if there's a DVD commentary track, because that's synced to the DVD edit, it's a mix of the original dub audio and the commentary, and the commentators talk straight through the reel changes, the inconsiderate chatterboxes! No amount of editing is going to fix that. Fortunately for us, ADV films preserved the pure commentary audio (just the commentators), and by carefully editing out some gaps, breaths, and "umms" in the minute or so before and after a reel-change point, you can keep them in sync with the new HD video.

The end result, by the way, is that our version of the films is very slightly different from both the DVD and Japanese HD transfer, but only in ways that don't really matter. In a way, it's similar to how, back in the day, when you watched a movie in a theatre, what you'd see would be slightly different each time, depending on the reflexes of the projectionist.

    19. Robert J Woodhead 5-time creator on

A good point, I'll make it more clear. Basically, the default choice is the Eve artwork shown. If we hit the stretch goal(s) that mean we commission Mr. Mikimoto to create new art, that'll take him 3-6 months to finish. At that point the new art will be revealed, and all the backers who are getting art will be able to choose between the two.

We'll definitely ask again if there are any old character goods in a warehouse somewhere, but I wouldn't bet on it.

    20. Justin Sevakis on

Will MZ23 Part II and its International Version be separate discs like the Japanese edition, or on one disc? The two are nearly identical except for the "Present For You" opening and the sex scene, so it would be easy to do with seamless branching.
Also, one more request for the Streamline dub of Part I and all of the awesome bonus material from the JP discs.

      Dr. Retriko on

      Hello,

If the new Haruhiko Mikimoto artwork goal is reached, how will the process of the artwork be handled? Will we get to see some rough concepts before the Kickstarter campaign is over? Or will we get options like multiple characters? I believe he did the cover of the B-Club Special which has all the Eve versions. Something like that would be cool. I'm just trying to decide if I'm going to pledge for the larger framed print.

Also, any possible surprise bonuses that will be revealed during the Kickstarter like old Megazone 23 books, cels, genga / douga, posters, pencil cases, or anything like that?

      Thank you.

Nice idea about the military patch...

    23. Robert J Woodhead 5-time creator on

We are working on expanding the rights as much as possible. But we wanted to start project preparation as soon as we could.

    24. Robert J Woodhead 5-time creator on

I will keep this in mind but likely the "bad" elements of the home video edition have not been preserved, at least in a form suitable for HD transfer.

A set of postcards would be a nice touch for the goodies. Aiming for the $90 USD version

I'll definitely be getting at least the$90 version. I saw the call for suggestions and the patches. It would be cool to see some kind of patch for operator 7-g or even the military baddies.

Ok, I thought of something. I would absolutely love a stretch goal being added (providing they're agreeable) to add a Wachowski sibling commentary track. While they never outeardly admited it, Megazone 23 appeared to be a dominant influence on The Matrix, and a commentary to that effect would be amazing.

    30. Michael Studte on

Notice there is no mention outside US, Canada and Europe. Will Aussies be left out in the cold? Would we be able to join via a reshipping service with a US address? (although that'll suck more money out of our wallets)

    31. Mr. Wong on

I was hoping you could include the theatrical mono mix of Part One. The HD remaster of Part One is based on the theatrical version, but it uses the stereo mix from the home video edition that was released a few weeks before the theatrical version. The theatrical mono mix has a few differences, mainly sound effects apparently.

I'd also love to see the home video edition of Part One as a stretch goal. The home video edition of Part One has a few animation errors that were fixed in the theatrical release.

    32. Robert J Woodhead 5-time creator on

We only have a 5.1 mix of the english dub. We could downmix it to 2.0 but I wonder if that is worth the bit budget. Still, I'll keep this comment in mind.

    33. Robert J Woodhead 5-time creator on

Typically, longer campaigns don't work that well. Most of the activity in a campaign is in the first week and the last few days. Also, if we get post-campaign signups that cause us to hit a stretch goal, we just do it.

    34. Jake Grantz on

Is there any English dub mix that you can include that's 2.0? Us late night listeners/people who live in homes with thin walls would love to not have to blast a 5.1 mix out of our audio systems =)

      Thanks!

The additional animation shot for for the Robotech TMP is a must. It was included in one of the Japanese releases so it shouldn't be hard to get. Even if the audio has to be stripped.
The soundtracks would also be a great addition. Maybe even make some music videos like the BGC ones.

    39. Robert J Woodhead 5-time creator on

These are definitely on our consider list. Not something I can promise yet, since they tend to come together organically, but definitely something we'd like to do.

      Robert Gowers on

This might be a bit too much especially with licensing etc. AIC recently launched a couple of campfire campaigns for a Megazone 23 remake and reboot, though campfire is only available in Japan. Do you think there could be some way to arrange with AIC to feature some of the rewards of that campaign with this kickstarter?

    42. Lee Franklin on

I will second the stretch goal soundtrack, if you can afford the licensing! A very nice frame-able lithograph is always good too!

    43. Robert J Woodhead 5-time creator on

We've actually done similar things with personalized certificates on prior discs, and you are right, it is a nightmare.

    44. Keith Leopold on

I'd love to see a shiny foil stamped art version of the box as a stretch goal. As well as a potential bugging nightmare of being able to enter your backer ID at the menu, and being individually recognized as a 7-G Operator.

Hello Robert My name is Michael Moore I backed every Kickstarter you posted so far and I’m very interested in backing Megazone 23 omega edition I was wondering if possible are you thinking of offering a hardcover artbook With a sketch for 600$ like you did in the gunsmith cats Kickstarter I would be very interested in purchasing something like that If you made that a pledge item please let me know thank you very much

    47. Robert J Woodhead 5-time creator on

      Yes, all subtitles are selectable.

    48. Robert J Woodhead 5-time creator on

This is a bit out of scope for the project; music licensing is a whole separate thing from the video rights and makes things a lot more complex. I always consider it but there has never been enough "bang for buck" to make it worthwhile.

That said, if someone wants to do projects to re-release old soundtracks, we'd be happy to point them to the right people in Japan to start discussing it.

    49. Jimmy on

Thanks Robert - you keep taking my money for this projects. Looks like it will be my biggest backing yet for that big print. :D

    50. Jimmy on

Additionally, for the subtitles during playback of the Japanese track can be turned on / off on the fly?

About

This is a rough first-draft of the campaign. Your comments and suggestions are most appreciated.

Estimated campaign start date: August 1st, 2019.

Making its debut in 1985, Megazone 23 ignited the Japanese Original Video Animation (OVA) boom. It proved there was a market for direct-to-video anime films, and paved the way for anime to become not just a niche genre, but a world-wide phenomenon.

The team that created Megazone 23 includes a Who's Who of anime legends, including (just to name a few) ISHIGURO Noboru (Macross, Yamato), ITANO Ichirō (creator of the “Macross Missile Massacre”), MIYAO Gaku (Devil Hunter Yōko), MIKIMOTO Haruhiko (Macross, Gunbuster), ANNO Hideaki (Evangelion), YATAGAI Kenichi (Bubblegum Crisis), ARAMAKI Shinji (Appleseed), HOSHIYAMA Hiroyuki (Dirty Pair), ARII Emu (Bubblegum Crash), SAGISU Shirō (Evangelion), MORIMOTO Koji (The Animatrix), YŪKI Nobuteru (Vision of Escaflowne), KAKINOUCHI Narumi and HIRANO Toshiki (Vampire Princess Miyu), UMETSU Yasuomi (Kite), and KITAZUME Hiroyuki (Gundam).

With your support, it will be our honor and pleasure to help create the definitive release of the series: the Megazone 23 Omega Edition.

Synopsis

YAHAGI Shōgo is a young man living in Tokyo in the mid-80s, enjoying life during a period of unprecedented peace and prosperity.

Or so he thinks...

In reality he, and everyone he knows, are living in a carefully maintained illusion. Almost all are blissfully unaware that they are aboard a massive spaceship, Megazone 23. Only a few of the inhabitants of Megazone 23 know the truth -- that not only is the city a ship, but that it is controlled by Bahamut, an AI, and is in danger of attack from the mysterious Dezalg.

When Shōgo stumbles upon the secret of Megazone 23, the military decides that he and his friends need to be silenced before they can interfere with their plans to hack Bahamut. Shōgo only has two things going for him – a motorcycle that is much more than it seems, and an acquaintance who is much less so!

Featured Artists

Two members of the original production team have agreed to provide new materials for this release.

MIYAO Gaku is a manga artist, character designer, and animator, best known outside of Japan as the creator of Devil Hunter Yōko. He worked on the mecha designs for Megazone 23, and is currently working on the charming manga series Cycle Shop Aoba (which has been running for 20 years and shows no signs of wearing out) and Second Life Animator, a time-travel story set in the anime industry.

MIKIMOTO Haruhiko is an illustrator, character designer and manga artist, and in the past has also worked as an animator and animation director. He is renowned for his work on influential series such as Macross, Orguss, Gunbuster, Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, and, of course, for the design of Eve, the sentient computer program that runs Megazone 23. Current works include the original character designs for Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, and the manga Super Dimension Fortress MACROSS THE FIRST and Mobile Suit Gundam École du Ciel.

Contents of the Set

The Omega edition will be a significant superset (with a few minor possible exceptions; see below) of the Japanese Megazone 23 Blu-ray release. The core content (assuming no stretch goals are reached) will include:

  • The complete Megazone 23 saga (Parts I, II and III) with the original Japanese 2.0 and the ADV Films English 5.1 audio tracks. Total runtime: 4h 4m (each is about 80m long).
  • The Megazone 23 Part II International Edition English dub (94m).
  • An assortment of Megazone 23 trailers.
  • The original ADV Films English commentary featuring Matt Greenfield, David Williams and Janice Williams.
  • Multicolored non-SDH and SDH subtitle tracks and SDH captions for the Japanese program, SDH captions for the english program, and multicolored SDH subtitles for the commentary tracks.
  • All backers will be listed on the disc in a special feature and in a 9-panel poster insert in the Amaray case.
  • Expanded Production Artbook containing significantly more content that the Japanese artbook (Premium set only). The Japanese book was about 64 pages, ours will probably end up over 100 pages long.
Sample settei pages from the Japanese Blu-ray Artbook (our version will be translated into English, of course!)
Sample settei pages from the Japanese Blu-ray Artbook (our version will be translated into English, of course!)

In addition, we are planning to include additional content if certain stretch goals are reached. This includes:

  • Japanese commentary featuring MIYAO Gaku and our returning champion, SATO Hiroki.
  • Use of MIKIMOTO Haruhiko's outstanding new Eve painting.
  • New artwork created by Mr. Mikimoto for this edition.
  • 8-page Megazone 23 manga created and illustrated by Mr. Miyao.

Finally, there are several items that we hope to include, but which require additional work to ensure that we have the appropriate rights to use them and usable materials. These include:

  • A series of music videos featuring MIYASATO Kumi that were included in the Japanese release.
  • The Streamline Pictures English dub of Megazone 23 Part I.
  • The Manga Entertainment English dub of Megazone 23 Part III.

The Basic set will consist of 2 BD50 Blu-rays and the poster in a dual-disc Amaray case with reversible cover insert. The Premium set adds the production artbook and a chipboard case. As with our previous releases, the Omega Edition is a limited-edition and there will be only one pressing.

A smaller (24x18") digitally-signed version of this reward will also be available as an add-on goodie; see below for more details.

Pearlescent Patron - Current Price: $2500 - Limited Reward: 10/10 Remaining

Includes everything in Prominent Patron, plus Mr. Mikimoto will create a colorful shikishi based on your request and inscribe it to you personally. It does not have to be related to Megazone 23, but it must be personally inscribed; these are not intended for resale.

The price of this reward will drop by $100 every few days until it sells out or reaches a reserve price. All backers who select this reward will get the same price as the final backer.

Due to the way Kickstarter works (we can't change the price of a reward after someone selects it), all backers will be initially be charged whatever the price was when the first person selected this reward, but we will issue partial refunds shortly after the campaign concludes.

Here are some samples Mr. Mikimoto has provided us to give you an idea of what he will deliver.

Purrfect Patron - Current Price: $2500 - Limited Reward: 10/10 Remaining

Includes everything in Prominent Patron, plus Mr. Miyao will create a colorful shikishi based on your request and inscribe it to you. It does not have to be related to Megazone 23, but it must be personally inscribed; these are not intended for resale.

Important Shikishi Restrictions

Only one character per shikishi. You may make suggestions about situation, pose, clothing, etc., but these are suggestions only; they are not binding on the artist.

Shadowy Junta Leader - Current Price: $6000 - Limit: 1

All the rewards of Prominent Patron, 5 copies of the Premium set, one of each of the variants of the signed Mikimoto giclée prints (if we produce multiple options because Mr. Mikimoto creates additional art, you'll get one of each), and 5 of each goodie (except for the 24x18" giclée prints, since they'd be redundant). Most importantly, you will be listed as the Shadowy Junta Leader on the packaging!

The price of this reward will reduce by $100 per day until it is chosen.

Multiple Rewards?

Just like with the goodies, you will be able to addon extra rewards post-campaign. The one tricky issue is if you want multiple rewards that are limited in quantity. In this instance, we recommend that you pick the reward you want the most, and message to tell us about the other reward(s) you want. If they are available at the end of the campaign, you will have the opportunity to snag them at the differential cost. So for example, if you selected Portrait Patron and also wanted Prominent Patron, since both provide the basic Patron rewards, you'd only pay the difference ($100) between Patron and Prominent Patron.

Stretch Goals

$125,000 - Japanese commentary featuring MIYAO Gaku and our returning champion, SATO Hiroki.

$150,000 - Use of Mr. Mikimoto's Eve illustration created for the Japanese Blu-ray release, with additional tweaks by Mr. Mikimoto (a notorious perfectionist). This is the illustration we used as a test for the giclée canvas prints.

$175,000 - New 8-page Megazone 23 manga created by Mr. Miyao. Will unlock 8 special Portrayed Patron rewards ($900), which result in you being depicted as a background character in the manga!

$200,000 - A new “cell-art” Eve illustration by Mr. Mikimoto. In addition to being used in the packaging, it will be available as a giclée canvas print.

$225,000 - New Secret History of Megazone 23featurette by the team at Did You Know Anime?

$250,000 - Mr. Mikimoto's new art will be upgraded to a painting similar in complexity to what he created for the Japanese release.

$300,000, $400,000, $500,000: We have no idea! But you have great ideas, so with your help we'll come up with something really cool if need be!

Shipping Fees

Basic Sets:

  • US: $7.
  • Elsewhere: $20.

Premium Sets / Patrons:

  • US: $9.
  • Elsewhere: $30.

Goodies

In our Gunsmith Cats kickstarter, we created a variety of little extra goodies that were available as addons. We are doing the same on the Omega edition, but to keep the Kickstarter part as simple as possible, we'll be handling them as post-campaign add-ons.

Most of our goodies have their origins in backer suggestions, so if you have a good idea, please let us know.

Currently planned Megazone 23 goodies include:

  • Embroidered Patch - $5.00

Risks and challenges

While we should be able to meet or beat the September 2020 release date, a video production project such as this can suffer unexpected delays. In particular, one side-effect of the excellent feedback we get from backers is that we expect a certain amount of "feature creep" as people come up with great ideas that "simply must be done", and these tend to stretch the schedule a bit.

Our policy is that when a critical-path item causes a delay, we use that extra time to try and improve other aspects of the project. All of our previous projects have ended up shipping a few months late (each time for new and "interesting" reasons), but what we ended up shipping was better than what it would have been if we'd hit our schedule.

The bottom line is that we will take the time to get things right, even if that means slipping the release date, and that we will keep you fully informed every step of the way -- we typically post updates every couple of weeks.

Some people tell us that the stories we recount about things going wrong are one of their favorite parts of our projects, but we promise we don't do it deliberately. We don't have to fake incompetence, it just comes naturally.
