To protect them from a world devastated by the wars of elves, Aecer hid the Roden from the light of the world.
After the age of Elves, it was Men who discovered the nest of Roden, set fire to it and stole the lamps of Aecer. The children of Aecer are exposed to the light of the world, once again. The Roden are sometimes advised by the last Elf that lives in a ruined tower above their nesting caves. In the ancient wood nearby are the fierce Wolfen. These are massive, bipedal wolves. They are a brutal, xenophobic people and the Roden closest neighbors.
Without the lamps of Aecer to hide them, the Roden must decide how to live in the post-elven lands, and if they have the courage, the strength ...the blessing of Aecer, recover their stolen lamps.
By Aecer's Light - The Zine
By Aecer's Light is a fantasy setting featuring the Roden.
The zine is a 18 - 24 page, black and white, 6 x 9 saddle stitched booklet. Artwork mystically rendered by the incredibly awesome Kurt Komoda and the layout magics cast by the multi-talented Nathan D. Paoletta.
The zine will provide play for a campaign-starter or one-shot (easy con run) focusing on the Roden after the time of elves. Roden are the rat-folk of Burning Wheel fame. They are covered in fur with a long tail --the likeness of Aecer, herself. There are sections covering the last elf and the uneasy relations with their Wolfen neighbors. The Wolfen are a new monster. They are a savage, superstitious folk brought to these lands during the war of Elves and abandoned after the songs of peace.
Then there are the desperate men from the south who truck with a devil...
- 6 pre-gen Roden characters. Just add names and beliefs. Suggestions for beliefs included.
- Stats for Wolfen, Men and the last Elf and the devil of men.
- A regional map, drawn from the Roden perspective
- Advice about writing beliefs for the setting and playing other stocks in the setting.
The printed map in the Initiates Reward tier is laminated 11x17, 100# matte white cover stock. Hand-drawn and painted by Roden initiates from the original land scroll of Aecer.
New Kickstarter, who dis?
I'm a Tabletop RPG evangelist and freelance game writer. I wrote the recently released The Clockwinders for Fate Worlds of Adventure. I've also written the Prime Supers setting for Cortex Prime.
My gaming convention schedule is maddening! I've played and run games like Burning Wheel at Dreamation, Origins, GenCon, BigBadCon, New Mexicon, PAX Unplugged, RinCon, KantCon and more. We may have even played together!
Burning Wheel is my jam and I have indoctrinated the new, the shy and the curious at cons for years. I have GMed several sessions in this setting at conventions over the last two years. The zine quest promo was a stroke of lightning for me. I'm giddy-excited about working with rockstars Kurt Komoda and Nathan D. Paoletta on this project.
I'm also grateful to you, KS backer, for making this happen.

Risks and challenges
I like to stack the deck. I've called in some favors from industry vets who've been to this rodeo before. I'm using SmartPress for printing, I've got art commissioned by the amazing Kurt Komoda, the text of the zine is headed to editing. Layout is in the capable hands of Nathan D. Paoletta. I've been running this setting of Roden adventures the past two years at conventions - some of you have even played these!
The unknown, unknowns, should those gremlins appear - I'll tell you about them as soon as I know and we'll starve them out.
- All gone!
