Mad Era Brewing is a local microbrewery and restaurant in Simi Valley that will be opening in the summer of 2019. As Simi residents, we are excited to share our passion with the community and bringing a brewery and a restaurant to our home town.
Mad Era Brewing will have a full food menu as well as craft soda, kombucha, beer and wine!
How it all started
Adam and Alex met by chance at a Simi Valley block party in the Summer of 2014. Little did they know how important this chance meeting would become...
Alex was a craft beer enthusiast, Adam was just learning the ropes. Alex took Adam to many breweries in Southern CA and introduced him to the Craft Beer scene. Alex also taught Adam the fine art of Homebrewing. After years of brewery visits, beer tastings, and countless brew sessions, there was only one thing left to do...
Early one morning, Adam approached his wife Christine, “Let’s open a brewery here in Simi!”, Christine replied, “I like everything you’re saying”. Much to Adam’s surprise Christine was on board 100% from the very beginning. This immediate support is what gave Adam the drive to pursue the dream of bringing a Brewery to Simi Valley.
Adam knew he and Christine could not do it alone.
After several months of inaction, Christine pushed Adam to follow through with their plan. She knew he was going to need a jumpstart to get moving.
Adam approached Alex with the plan. At first, Alex was a little hesitant, understanding the time, effort and money it would take. There is a lot that goes into starting a brewery, especially if you want to do it right. First you need the support of your family, then you need the right team, a perfect spot, appropriate licenses and permits, equipment, beer, and most importantly, you need the community.
When Alex approached his wife, Binh, with the idea, she first looked at him and asked, "Are you running out of things to do?" followed with, "I think it's a great idea, you've always wanted to open a brewery." Binh suggested that to do it right, it needs to be family friendly, pet friendly, it must have vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options, and most importantly, it must provide more than just beer.
It was clear that between the 4 of them, they have what it takes to get this project off the ground. Adam & Christine bring small business and restaurant experience to the table, while Alex & Binh bring retail corporate experience, financial acumen and beer expertise.
One other thing was also clear, the community is key to the success of the brewery and if they were to open one, it needs to be in a community that they will be able to support, as well as one that would be able to support them. Simi Valley was the answer.
Next on the list was finding the right location. After looking at over a dozen spots, there were a few potential locations lined up, but not one of them seemed like the perfect spot for Simi's first brewery. After nearly giving up on the perfect spot and settling on a location, they received a call from the property owner of the old Marie Calendars building. The perfect spot became available and he wanted to create a home for our brewery. It was the call they were waiting for.
Up until this point, a brewery was a dream, but with that phone call, suddenly it became very real. With a location too good to pass up, the 4 of them embarked on a new chapter in their life. Slowly but surely, the pieces started to fall together, and the journey began.
From the beginning, the vision was to bring a brewery to the Simi Valley community, and not only to offer a delicious cold beer and amazing food, but to also provide a destination that the community would want to visit, invite their friends to. This was on its way to becoming a destination Simi Valley would be proud to call their own.
Adam and Christine are deeply involved in the community. From little league to school functions, their passion is supporting the community.
Alex and Binh are food and beer enthusiasts who enjoy discovering different tastes and styles, and learn what makes them great.
Together, they hope to bring the best beers in the industry, and the best styles from all over the world, to Simi Valley. The goal is to provide Simi Valley with an opportunity to explore, learn and appreciate this marvelous beverage.
What have we been doing?
We have spent the past year working with our architects, engineers, and construction crew on getting this brewery off the ground. We’ve ordered our 15 barrel brewhouse (465 gallon), built our plans, worked with the city to get the necessary approvals, and now we are fully in development mode.
Our goal is to provide the Simi Valley community with a place where you want to go after work, on weekends, on special events, or just because. Your donation will help us ensure this will happen. Your donation today will bring us to our goal of not only providing the Simi Valley community with beer, but creating a place that will give every resident pride in saying that there is a brewery in Simi.
Where will my money go?
The money will go toward the brewpub of course! A portion will go toward the merchandise and benefits that you will receive, the other portion will go toward the brewery and beer. There is still some brewery equipment that we need to purchase, and the rest of it will ensure we have enough beer for everyone once we open the doors.
With your donation, we are excited to offer various rewards to show our appreciation. We are grateful for anything, we truly are. We can’t do this without you and even the smallest amount matters.
Mad Era Kickstarter T-Shirts and Hats will only be available via the kickstarter campaign.
To save shipping fees, rewards can be picked up at the brewery once we're open.
We’d like to show you a few of the rewards that you’ll be getting when you back our kickstarter.
Follow us on Instagram and Facebook for the buildout updates!
- When do you open?
The estimated date for opening is in July 2019.
- How will I get my prize?
In an effort to save shipping costs, you can pick up your prize directly at the brewery.
- When do we receive our rewards?
The rewards expectation date includes the date in which you should expect your reward. The items that are brewery-related will be fulfilled once the brewery is open.
- If we select a reward, do we receive all the rewards that are at lower levels?
No, the reward you select includes the items that are in that reward. For example, if you select the $25 Mad Era Hat reward, you will not receive the items other categories, i.e, $10, $5, etc... If you would like to receive the other items, we would love for you to purchase the other reward.
- How do I purchase 2 or more rewards?
If you would like to purchase more than 1 reward, simply add the dollar amount of the additional reward to your total. At the end of the kickstarter campaign, we'll send out a survey asking what reward that additional amount is for.

Risks and challenges
The risks around the campaign include the timeline of when the brewery will be built. As you can see we are in the building phase of the brewery, and are aiming for a summer open. We will of course keep everyone updated on the buildout, we just ask that you be patient with us if any delays come our way. We truly appreciate your support!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
