Madam Clara Presents The 5-cent Tarot
The 5-cent Tarot is another new undertaking I have begun as a personal project. I wanted to create a fun and whimsical deck loosely inspired by Victorian era poster art. Using vintage images and remnants of biological and botanical ephemera, this deck also incorporates keywords in both the upright and reverse positions.
There are no people in this deck, but flora, animals and insects with sometimes human accessories and unexpected elements. This deck is full of small surprises and fun bits of whimsy — the idea is to engage the reader with images that are interesting, yet clear and to the point.
Quirky and fun: in this deck, pentacles are buttons, wands are matchsticks, swords are needles and cups are vintage teacups.
The keywords in upright and reverse positions are scaled to a size that will be helpful for new readers, but also not a distraction for experienced readers. The compositions also employ the symbolism from traditional tarot and are therefore, RWS-adjacent.
The designs you see here are near-final. However, I will continue to finesse details throughout so the entire project holds together as a cohesive piece.
Fans of the Madam Clara Sees All deck (3 editions) and the Midcenturian deck already know that quality and presentation are very important to me. Cardstock will be premium, akin to my latest decks which have a linen finish and superior shufflability, similar to a bicycle deck. Together we will explore luxury add-ons, such as gilded edges and metallics.
Each deck will include a matching custom designed pouch (watch for updates) as well as 2 extra cards, just for fun. Again, stay tuned for updates.
The backs will also be a vote for backers, so keep watching for updates to see where this could go!
STRETCH GOAL #1 REACHED! ALL DECKS WILL GET AN UPGRADED BOX
Hooray! The campaign is moving so fast, I can hardly keep up with all of you!
That said, I've set the first stretch goal to $15,000, which we have already surpassed, so everyone gets an upgraded premium box. It seems to be one of the more popular and meaningful upgrades from all the hearty discussion and feedback you've given. I am working with the printer on a hard-side magnetic book style box. Of course, the cards will also come with a custom drawstring pouch as mentioned in the launch. Stay tuned for design updates!
Matte color edges: love 'em or leave 'em -- it's your choice!
Once the campaign reaches $20,000 -- everyone gets the right to choose: matte color (tbd) or plain edges. I've heard both sides loud and clear and the only way to make everyone happy is to offer both! I will split the print run with a solid matte color edge (we've got healthy discussion around that -- gold, nickel, green, colors!) or plain edges for those of you that would prefer not. Everybody wins! And we are not that far away from this stretch, so this is just about a sure thing! Thank you all for your feedback -- I want you all to LOVE this deck with no compromises!
Alright, okay! All four extra cards for everyone!
With all the feedback on this, it's nearly impossible to distill to a best choice that you'll all be happy with! So, at the $21,000 funding level, everyone gets all 4 extra majors. Thank you all so much for the support and the encouragement. I know these are a bit off the RWS system, but I feel they can add another level of engagement and interest to your readings, should you choose to use them. So, $21k -- very much likely and within reach. If you want to guarantee these stretch goals, I appreciate you sharing the campaign in your circles to get the word out. Here we go.... Stretch goal #4 - stay tuned!
$20k reached and stretch goal #2 unlocked!
Thank you all -- good things coming your way! Stay tuned for the edge color reveal for those of you that want it. I will make this part of the survey at the close of the project. Cheers!
$21k reached and stretch goal #3 unlocked -- all 4 extra majors!
Thanks for your support! Spread the news for more backers and more stretch coming your way!
Stretch goal #4 unlocked: LWB with every deck!
We shot for the $25,000 goal and everyone now gets a printed LWB with your deck. I will also design a downloadable PDF so you always have a digital copy on hand. So, what do you say -- let's get the word out there, share on all your social networks and let's get the numbers even higher! And remember to post with #5centtarot for a chance to win a free deck!
Ca-ching! Stretch goal #5 unlocked and another freebie for all eligible backers!
Well, look at you! You've all amazed me once again! Because of all your posting and sharing, we've reached the big stretch of $32k and now every deck gets a coordinating spreadcloth! Looking at cotton, as that is the general desire on the message boards. I will be reworking the design, but I am liking the general vibe here. Will definitely change out those corner design, and again, temper the contrast. Hmmm. Maybe one more stretch goal before close out. Keep watching!
Let's go for another stretch goal #6! $35k gets a 5¢ pin
You guys are killin' me -- I know you love these stretch goals, so let's go for something really fun this time! The 5¢ coin slot pin in vintage antiqued brass and carnival red enamel. I created similar pins for my last Kickstarter deck and backers loved them! This simplified version of the logo design is also inspiration for the tarot pouch. A little more mystery, a little less "branded" and a whole lot of fun as a conversation starter. *Remember: it's all your sharing and posting that is driving up the total and unlocking more stretch goals, so please keep it going for these last few days! I will make it worth your while! Don't forget to include the hashtag #5centtarot and the link http://kck.st/2J61XJc
Mission accomplished! Stretch goal #6 unlocked!
All stretch goals unlocked and everybody wins!
Just rounding up where we landed on stretch goal rewards. For goal #2, I will provide more detail (final color) before the survey goes out. Also, look out for a potential choice in colors for the pouch and possibly for the spread cloth. Group hug!!
Risks and challenges
No real risks here. I have funded 3 editions of the original Madam Clara deck, as well as the Midcenturian here on Kickstarter. The project is 95% complete, with only a few details intentionally left to share the decision with backers through an online vote. I have printers at the ready and expect no delays in shipping.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
