"Of all my 50 battles, the most terrible was the one I fought at Moscow." Napoleon
The Battle of Borodino - fought at the gates of Moscow on Monday, September 7, 1812 - was the single bloodiest day of fighting in all the Napoleonic Wars.
Borodino has been the subject of many games, but few awards. With so many troops in a confined space, it has been a difficult battle to "game" in a way that provides players more than a pounding match.
VentoNuovo Games http://www.ventonuovo.net/ presents a true "player's game" on Borodino. Using game lessons from our popular Moscow ’41, and a lifetime of study (including visiting the battlefield), VentoNuovo brings you a Borodino that gives both players challenges and choices, and can be finished in a few hours.
One player commands the powerful Grande Armée, made up of French, Polish, Italians, and a host of German States.
The other player takes the place of Marshal Kutuzov, to place the mighty army of the Czar into position for a powerful defense (and always looking for a chance to counter-punch.)
Historically, both sides fought with valour and desperation, and both leaders made big mistakes. Can you do better? Can you change history?
A great game starts with a great map. Using a blend of period and modern sources, we have created the most accurate map of the battlefield ever presented.
The forest locations are there. The hills are right-- and mostly not as tall as usually depicted. This really was an only marginally defensive place. But that means the French have opportunities and the Russians are forced to maneuver.
Bloody Monday gives both players a range of challenging decisions... each impulse of every turn. Wooden blocks and colourful PVC stickers represent your troops and the command structure, providing both easy bookkeeping of unit strength and abilities, plus “fog of war” that forces players make choices without knowing more than a commander should know.
In the past, our games have used 16mm blocks. But for the color of Napoleonic warfare, we are going for larger 20mm blocks. Here is a size comparison of Bloody Monday blocks and our Moscow '41.
Game Play: Accent on Action
While we have captured the essence of Napoleonic battle action, particularly for this battle, there are only about 6 pages of rules, including some advanced/optional rules that players can add for more detail, if they like.
The point is, these rules are fast to get into and, with the Player Aid, you'll be moving blocks and rolling dice quickly, not paging through questions.
We have playtested Bloody Monday through a range of gamer types. Veterans, pretty-newbies, even Grognards who particularly love the period. Reactions have been very good and their feedback has helped us make it even better! But we just signed a contract that will make Grognards even happier.
André Jouineau is well-known for his beautiful military illustrations. We have reached an agreement to use his wonderful images in our rulebook and will offer an "AJ Collectors Set" of stickers to be used as an alternative to our standard stickers (although those are nice, as you can see above).
The AJ Collectors Set is included with the "Everything Bloody Monday" bundle or as a distinct Add-On (see below). All supporters who select "Everything" or the Add-On will receive sample art designs for feedback and input before that set is printed. See Update 11.
The game plays best with two players, though we have enjoyed 4 player games as well (there are some natural divisions that work out). All VentoNuovo games are also tested for solo play, with the gamer playing both sides and changing sides of the table to preserve some of the fog-of-war. This one brings smiles that way.
NOTE for those who have experienced our Waterloo 200 game – Bloody Monday is not "Waterloo goes east" but its own gaming system. We do like our Waterloo 200 game (and offer it in bundles here) but we want to make sure no one gets the wrong idea.

Right now, the rules are only about FIVE pages. After we add plenty of examples and illustrations, they might get as large as eight pages. But the main thing is that this is a PLAYERS' game-- fast to get into and easy to ride. You will spend your time moving blocks, planning, gambling, rolling dice, and making good game noises (happy, anguish at bad rolls, you know how it works!). Fast play, not page flipping.
Each player will have one of these-- one sheet, printed front and back. With a simple read through of the rules, your Player Aid will give you everything you need to lead your armies to triumph (or at least to a good time).
You pretty much have the entire game laid out for you in these two pages. You'll spend your time on PLAY!
Everything you need to know about the map, terrain, units, and their abilities is right here.
This side has less color, but just straightforward directions-- your "recipe" for a great game experience. Your first game will probably last a bit longer than two hours, and then you will be even faster. Play to a conclusion, shake hands, swap sides, and try it again!
Pick the Support Pledge that suits you (lots of other VentoNuovo games are available at a big discount too). And check out the great Stretch Goals which add more value to your box.
Bloody Monday. Bloody Great Game!
Our friend Luca took notes of his first play-through to give you an idea how the game works and feels. They decided to play with ALL the Optional Rules, just so Luca could see everything on his first visit.
The Support Levels mention two other games available as a bundle.

Risks and challenges
This will be VentoNuovo's 8th game and third kickstarter. Our Moscow '41 shipped successfully three months before our promise. Leningrad '41 is now entirely at the printer and will ship about ten weeks earlier than promised. While there are always unexpected things in game production, we are veteran makers and very careful with our promises. The game will be produced in the EU so we will not have any tales of "waiting for ships to sail" or "can't get past customs" like some other kickstarter backers have endured. We are confident that our October commitment is a "no later than," and not an "if everything goes perfectly."Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
