Hello! I am a freelance illustrator based in Knutsford, UK. My artwork is inspired by my passion for animals (that's my rabbit Renly!) but also my love of folklore and fantasy.
I've always been captivated by the rabbit folklore in Watership Down, and it's one of my all time favourite books. It inspired me to create this illustration featuring Fiver and Hazel along with the other rabbits from Sandleford warren, looking out towards the high lonely hills of Watership Down.
Lord Frith the sun – creator of the universe - can be seen on the horizon, his rays staining the horizon red like Fiver’s vision of a field covered with blood – the vision that caused the rabbits to leave Sandleford warren and set out on an adventure to find a new home.
The Black Rabbit of Inlé is the grim reaper of the rabbit world, serving Lord Frith by taking rabbits away at the predestined time of their death. He can be seen in the foreground floating amongst the woundwort plants, foreshadowing what is to come on their journey.
Originally I also intended El-ahrairah to be featured in the illustration, but unfortunately the image became too cluttered to fit him in as well. El-ahrairah is the prince of rabbits, his name meaning ‘prince with a thousand enemies’ in lapine. Rabbits tell stories of his adventures, learning tricks from his cunning ways that help them to survive in the wild.
I recently returned to my unfinished illustration of El-ahrairah and finally completed him!
The Pin Designs
I was disappointed that El-ahrairah didn't fit into the original illustration so I really want to create something to celebrate him. I love designing pins and thought that he would make a great set along with the Black Rabbit of Inlé.
Both pins will be hard enamel with metal clutch fixings on the back. The base metal of the El-ahrairah pin will be gold, and it will be 40 mm at it’s longest side. The Black Rabbit pin will have a silver base metal and it will be 50 mm at it’s longest side. They will come fixed on backing cards and packaged in protective bio-degradable bags.
Alongside the pins my Watership Down illustration is available as an A3 (42 x 29.7cm) giclée print.
These giclée prints are printed in the UK using lightfast pigment inks on smooth 300gsm 100% cotton archival white matt finish paper, giving them a longevity of approx 100 years (under glass) and colours that really pop! The paper is FSC certified and will be posted rolled in a sturdy postal tube.
As El-ahrairah is not featured in this print he is also available as an A4 (29.7 x 21cm) inkjet print.
These are printed on lovely thick 270 gsm, "Natural" (slightly off white) FSC certified card.
All pledges up to the value of £20 will be posted by 1st Class within the UK and by standard airmail outside the UK. Any pledges over £20 will be posted 1st Class Signed For within the UK and by International Tracked & Signed outside the UK.

Other ways to support my project
Kickstarter is a fantastic way for small businesses such as mine to bring projects to life which would otherwise be difficult to fund. However I understand that not everyone has the spare pennies to spend. You can also help support my campaign by sharing it with friends and family and through your social media - all your support is hugely appreciated, thank you!

Risks and challenges
This is a low risk project. I have already produced several pin designs before so I know what to expect. I will be working with a manufacturer that I have used before, and I have already consulted them about the designs so the artwork is ready to go as soon as the Kickstarter campaign is finished. They have advised that the current turnaround for pins should be 3-4 weeks.
I'm aware that when ordering pins there are occasional minor flaws, but I will ensure that only the best quality pins are posted out to my backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
