Prepare to be Lyberated

Our mission is simple: to provide access to audio-based news, discussion, and alternative media without relying on existing broadcast companies for distribution in order to provide unabridged and uncensored content to our audience.

When we sat down and started Lyberated, we had a few goals in mind. Tired of traditional corporate motivators, "shareholder value", and the classic media business model, we are committed to restoring public discourse across conflicting viewpoints.

By removing ties to existing media companies, corporate interests, and government, we can provide the people with a censorship-free platform for their views. Our audience - this means you - has a direct impact on the type and variety of programming we offer throughout the network. We keep a careful balance between popular demand and core areas like under-reported news, culture, and science stories. Even if we, as a company, don't agree with the message, we will fight to hold the door open for the views of the American people.

Say Goodbye to Advertisers

We are completely eliminating the sale of the message to corporate interests, private lobbyists, and political action committees - restoring the free market to free media by letting the audience vote with their interests. Long story short, we will not take advertiser dollars to try to sell you something on one of our shows. No "words from our sponsors," no 15 minute political ad breaks, no male enhancement pill spots. Our network runs on LYSTYN, a proprietary platform built with the help of a huge community of developers working to achieve something magical. Play almost anywhere, on thousands of devices live or on-demand. Connect with other members and even show hosts as much or as little as you’d like. It’s up to you. LYSTYN isn’t bound by upward constraints on the size of the audience — which is an industry first.

Building LYSTYN was no small undertaking, and represents most of our efforts (and spending) so far. Coordinating all of the moving parts to give our audience a clean, streamlined experience has been a focus, and we remain committed to delivering high-quality content in a high-quality manner.

The Plan

We're currently planning a full public launch in February of 2015. Before we hit that point, we have an early preview period planned starting in December, and we're currently providing preview (or Pre-Pre-Launch) content that is available to the public.

With your help, we can launch in February (which is earlier than planned - see our Why Kickstarter section) and continue to grow from there. Our initial $10,000 goal is enough to guarantee a subscriber base that will warrant a full launch. It certainly doesn't benefit anyone if we provide content and no one is listening, so we want to make sure we've got a big enough user base to go live.

For Launch, we're putting forward our Launch Content Guarantee - basically our promise to deliver a certain amount of content, in certain ways, on the day of our full Launch (in other words, some pieces may not be available during Pre-Launch). Our basic guarantee is this: you'll be getting 30 hours of original programming per month, every month, even at our most basic level of service. If you have a modern web browser - even on a phone - you'll be able to listen along with us. We've got so much more than that planned, but we do have to pay the bills.

When we say original programming, we do mean original. Not replays, downloads, "best of" shows, or anything of the sort. Those will exist - we just don't count them toward our commitment of 30 hours.

Stretch Goals

Beyond our initial target, we've already got many stretch goals planned for you all. Before we dive into them, we can't stress the following point enough: everything you see below is part of our road map, and the stretch goals simply exist to get you these things sooner, at our launch.

  • At $20,000, we're going to bump our Launch Content Guarantee to 40 hours of original programming per month.

  • At $30,000, we'll also be distributing custom apps for iOS and Android at Launch. You'll still be able to access Lyberated from these devices without us reaching this point - apps just require some dedicated development we want to make sure we can support.

  • At $40,000, we bump our Guarantee to 50 hours.

  • At $50,000, we'll also have apps for set top box devices and apps like Roku and PLEX at Launch.

  • At $60,000, we jump to 60 hours for our Launch Content Guarantee. As an added bonus, for every $1,000 past this point, we'll add another hour (with a tentative cap of 200 hours at $200k).

  • At $75,000, every user will be able to personalize their own archive stream. Similar to a podcast subscription, you'll be able to sign up to download individual show archives, receiving episodes as soon as they are put into the vault. By the time we hit this goal, we'll be at 75 hours per month.

That's probably enough to cover for now. We'll get to our further plans in the coming days and weeks. Just remember -- every dollar grows the network for everyone, so every backer stretches your dollar even further.

Why Kickstarter

We had originally planned to launch Lyberated in the Spring of 2015. This would have given us plenty of time to secure additional funding and, more importantly, a larger talent pool for a larger content launch. Then Crimea happened. Then the dust-up in Gaza. ISIS. Ferguson. The list for the last year is long. We couldn't afford to wait any longer.

Lyberated launched early in its current "preview" mode. Focus shifted from recruitment to news coverage. We’ve more than doubled our development and marketing pace, causing some outlays to happen more rapidly than anticipated. We want to get Lyberated to you as fast as we can, but that's going to take more work.

Despite all of the motivation and talent at hand, we’re only human. Lyberated needs support in order to be fully realized, and we feel we need to move forward now. With all of the moneyed interests delivering 'the news', we don't think we can afford to wait.

To secure remaining talent and complete development, we need to fund final code development and staffing. We need to build a user base that is willing to help shape our Launch Content list. You have the opportunity to be a part of this effort from the ground up.

We're using this Kickstarter campaign to spread the word, gauge overall interest, and build the listener base that is necessary to drive our Launch. Getting in on the ground floor allows more than just access - it allows you to be a guiding hand in what we become.

Risks and challenges

Most of the necessary components for our launch are already in place, including the servers and network. Our developers are already hard at work to get the various other technical components ready so that they're completed before the end of the campaign - we want to be prepared regardless of how well we do.

There is always the possibility that we hit unanticipated costs along the way. However, we've done our best to budget for the unexpected.

While most projects worry about delays due to finances or manufacturing, the nature of Lyberated means that the sooner we can get to air, the sooner (and faster) we can grow to provide more content to more subscribers. Regardless of barely squeaking out our initial goal or blowing our stretch goals away, we plan to launch in February.

It's possible we might hit an unexpected problem that forces a specific show or app to launch later than anticipated - that's the nature of the business. Just rest assured that, if the campaign is successful, we will launch, and we will launch on time. Even if that means we have to pay out of pocket to do it.
