STARDECK is a custom deck of poker-sized playing cards, designed and illustrated by Lunar Saloon, and printed by The United States Playing Card Company. We struck out to create STARDECK after unsuccessful attempts at finding a well-designed set of sci-fi themed playing cards. Most are based off of existing properties like Star Wars or Star Trek, and their face cards are decorated with uninspiring photography. In response, we created our own world and filled it with richly illustrated characters in the style of classic card art.
56 poker sized playing cards featuring original artwork by Lunar Saloon printed by the United States Playing Card Company.
STARDECK tells of four archetypal sci-fi factions as they vie for control over Proxima B, Earth's terrestrial neighbor in the Proxima Centauri system. Proxima B's native population, the aliens whose subterranean existence has earned them the moniker "Spades", defend their world from outside invaders. Their overwhelming numbers are enabling them to fend off Earth's militarized colonization effort. The Hearts, an advanced robot population, aid Earth's various civilian and military factions via combat, manufacturing, and espionage; all while advocating for equal treatment and representation on Earth. The Club, Earth's most decorated combat unit, was the first to touch down on Proxima B. Quickly overrun by the Spade horde, its surviving members defend their landing site from the planet's hostile natives. The Diamond Corporation, currently profiting from a lucrative arms market, are diversifying into natural resource commodities, arriving on Proxima B with the goal of claiming rights to the planet's unassigned lands.
This Kickstarter-exclusive uncut sheet features every card on one side, and the card backs on the other. This mock-up shows the front and back of a single 22 x 26" uncut sheet.
We've worked with Neutral Ground to produce a Kickstarter-exclusive wooden etching. Each backer at this level will be able to choose their favorite face card, or the card back, to have laser-etched into a 6x8.5" maple ply. Each etching includes a keyhole slot for hanging. Backers will choose their card in a post-Kickstarter survey, but here are the cards you'll be able to choose from.
Another Neutral Ground exclusive, backers will get to choose their favorite face card, or card back, to be laser etched into an aluminum plate. Each etching is standard poker-card size. Pictured are early prototypes, while final metal cards will have an anodized texture, similar to a Macbook Pro. Backers will choose their card in a post-Kickstarter survey, but here are the cards you'll be able to choose from.
Backers at this level will be featured on a thank you card, included not only in the first printing for Kickstarter backers, but in every subsequent printing from here to eternity.
While the first three goals are pretty straight forward, the fourth may require a bit more explanation. In the video, Alex discussed some of the details in the cards and the story the deck is portraying. The STARDECK guide would be a small booklet covering these many details and easter eggs, along with additional story tidbits about each of the four factions.
Lunar Saloon is the Minneapolis-based creative studio of Alex and Meg Griendling. With nine years of industry experience, we've worked with clients like Google, Tumblr, IGN, Game Informer, and Double Fine. We hope that STARDECK will be the first of many fun products in our studio's lineup.
Risks and challenges
Any risks lie in the production process, but as we have years of experience with printers, and The USPCC are experts at printing playing cards, we're not anticipating too many issues. The design and initial spec printing has already been finished, so we're ready to send the artwork into production as soon as our campaign is fully funded.
We have a strong relationship with Neutral Ground, already having partnered on five previous projects. Any issues with production are expected to be resolved quickly, with our customer's expectations a top priority.
Our goal is to have rewards shipped out by December 19th, assuring that they will make it under the tree in time for Christmas celebrations. We are a two-person operation, which can make packaging and shipping tedious, however having already put out a Kickstarter with a similar timeline, we expect to be a well-oiled machine by the time the decks are ready to ship.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
