"Heaven and hell suppose two distinct species of men; the good, and the bad. But the greatest part of mankind float betwixt vice and virtue."
- David Hume
Errant Kingdom is a queer, high-fantasy visual novel for PC, Mac & Linux, brought to you by Lunaris Games, the team behind supernatural murder mystery, When The Night Comes.
The Kingdom of Novus has been thrown into disarray, and it's up to you to decide if you’ll help to bring peace, or if you’ll stoke the fires of chaos. Enter a high fantasy world steeped in political intrigue; where magic touches the land and blood turns the wheels unseen. Dishonor & betrayal. Hope & despair. Pick a side, and meet your match.
Errant Kingdom is a story with darker elements at play. As a denizen of the kingdom of Novus, you're at the heart of watching history unfold before your eyes. Whether you see its rise or fall, however, is up to you. There are those who will help you in your endeavors along the way, and might even find themselves enamored with you. However, it is possible to earn their ire as well, should your plans be devious. Only you will see how the story evolves, and the most important moves to make are yours, and yours alone.
Errant Kingdom features three playable protagonists (with no fixed protagonist portrait, leaving players free to imagine their character as they see fit) and eight potential romance routes (six individual, two polyamorous). You can also play our 'story only' mode where you do not romance anyone, and it will not affect your experience in any way.
Errant Kingdom will be released in volumes on a bi-monthly (once every two months) basis. We plan for there to be a minimum of 5 volumes, each totaling approximately 2 hours of playtime, with the prologue being released in December 2019 if successfully funded. Your pledge will give you a download for our Prologue, the first installment, and all subsequent Volume updates after this will be free!
We have no in-game purchases, and this one-off cost will give you access to 240+ hours of game play when taking into account our 8 romance routes, our no romance route, and our three different MC roles. Each play-through has the potential to be different, depending on your choices and your actions.
Errant Kingdom has a LGBTQA+ cast of love interests, each with their own unique backgrounds and intertwining stories. You will begin the game as merely an acquaintance, but as the story progresses you will have the chance to spend time with each of them. Eventually, if you choose a romance route, you will become exclusive with one (or two, if polyamorous options are selected) of our love interests, and will gain access to special scenes, CGs, and conversations.
All six love interests are romanceable individually, and our polyamorous relationships are Lucien & Raiden, and Maja & Erik. Roux is asexual, and Livia is demisexual.
You can also check out our character playlists over on Spotify!
Our story is linear, so once a romance is selected, you will still interact with all of our other cast members! We're trying to bring an RPG style of game play to the Visual Novel world, and this is one of the elements we're most passionate about executing well.
Livia is an imposing presence in the kingdom; Novus' dark knight suffers no fools, and she is unquestionably committed to her duty as newly appointed Knight Commander. Her loyalty to the crown is unwavering, but Livia has her weaknesses just like everyone else does. Feeling betrayed by her former commanders actions, she sets out to prove herself and ensure that she does not exist under his tainted shadow.
Erik has lost his way after being discharged from his duty as Knight Commander. He's been exiled from the palace, has lost the trust of those he held dear, and now he resides among the 'normal folk' of Novus. He makes coin by taking contracts as a bounty hunter, and he's damn good at it, as long as he's sober... or awake.
Maja hails from a highly respected noble family, but has no interest in using her families name to get places. She's her own person, and she's determined to serve the crown with poise and grace. Painfully smart and kind, Maja educates the magically inclined citizens of Novus and assists with research and ensuring that the kingdom is safe, no matter what.
Raiden, at first glance, is a strange, unassuming young man. Though, if the rumors are true, he's actually Novus' infamous 'Snake in the Shadows'; an assassin so deadly that even other assassin's fear him. You can decide if you think the title is befitting of him, but there's no doubt that you'll have an incredibly interesting time in his company.
Lucien is the palace's demon ambassador; something which raises many eyebrows with the citizens of Novus. Why would the king and queen appoint such a creature to serve the crown, you ask? Well... Lucien isn't really sure that they know either, but they're definitely not going to question it. They're the epitome of mysterious, and they love to play games, just don't get on their bad side...
Roux is... Roux. They are the watchful eye that follows you in the forests that surround the kingdom, and they are the friendly face that greets you with a smile in the tavern. They know everything, and they will eagerly offer you assistance in your time of need. However, don't think them a friend too fast, because Roux is also mischievous, and nothing is ever what it seems...
Pick from three totally unique protagonist roles to start your journey in Novus. Each role will offer unique dialogue options, reactions, and scenarios within the world of the game, ensuring each time you replay you have a different experience.
You're a revered noble from Vih'thris chosen by your King to serve as an Ambassador to the kingdom of Novus. Previous meetings between you have made you see eye to eye, and you've managed to establish a friendly, but tenuous alliance. While newly immersed in the court of Novus, you advocate for the betterment of both kingdoms. However, though you may serve the realm, you also serve the people. The assassination attempt puts into question both the King & Queen's ability to rule, and their integrity. It's up to you to decide how you will proceed.
You've been sent to Novus from the neighboring kingdom of Vih'thris as a show of good faith between rulers. Hand-picked by your king, your reputation as a knight proceeds you, and you've been charged to serve Novus and its inhabitants in the name of glory. The reception to your arrival has been promising, but following an attempt on the lives of Novus' rulers, everything has been thrown into chaos. You've sworn to protect Novus with your life, but are you happy to serve the sometimes bloody hands that rule?
By the order of a high-ranking associate in your hometown, you find yourself stationed in Novus; a kingdom that has a grudge against its newly appointed rulers. As a small rebellion threatens to find its footing, you plant yourself amongst the 'normal folk' to cause chaos. Though, it is up to you to decide if you will stoke those fires of rebellion, or if you'll douse them and reduce them to ash.
Player Pronoun Selection
As well as picking your role, first name, and surname at the start of your game, you can also select your pronouns. You will be addressed correctly throughout the game.
We want to give those who might not be interested in pursuing a romance the chance to comfortably enjoy the game. You can play the game without having to select any flirt options, or enter a relationship, whilst still experiencing the story in-full.
Depending on your choices and actions throughout the game, your reputation will fluctuate. This system will allow players to unlock special dialogue options and experiences that will influence the reactions of those around you, all tailored around the choices you make.
In Novus' town square you'll find a mission board where you can pick up additional mini-quests for added gameplay. With each update, the board will change, and you'll get the chance to embark on some weird and wonderful journeys in addition to the main story-line. Though, you'll have to wade through the letters of complaint, petty disputes between townsfolk, and lonely hearts adverts first...
Unlock character information, lore, and much more in our Codex that will appear in the main menu alongside our CG gallery!
The game will be available to download on both Steam and itch.io.

We're a queer indie development team with a passion for creating immersive, narrative-driven stories filled with diverse characters. We believe that representation matters, whether it be solving supernatural murders, or saving a kingdom. Our primary goal is to bring the stories & games to the LGBTQA+ community that it so sorely needs, and to do that with the love it deserves and that we have for it.
We started working on our very first project, When The Night Comes, in the summer of 2018 as a hobby between three friends. With no experience in game dev under our belts, we simply set out to make something we would personally enjoy and want to play. Our success with WTNC has been wholly unexpected, and we found our hobby quickly turning into something relatively serious, and thus Lunaris Games was born.
WTNC is currently #3 on itch.io's top rated games, with 5-star reviews across the board. The game is completely free and its creation is 100% fan funded via donations on itch.io and Patreon, where we enjoy sharing our works in progress and development process with our supporters. We also run a successful online shop where we sell prints and other merchandise, which we plan to expand with the release of Errant Kingdom.
Most of the team now work on our projects full-time, and the reason we're seeking funding is simple; we want to make more games of a much higher quality, and also feel secure whilst doing so.
That's where you, and this campaign, come in!
Kris W. - Lead Writer
Kris is our resident British cryptid, and has been writing creatively for as long as she can remember. With a background in marketing and merchandising, as well as being our lead writer, she runs our day to day operations and never sleeps for more than four hours. If you can't find her hunched over her desk typing furiously, you may come across her in the local graveyard perched atop a tombstone, waiting for the night to take her back.
Anna T. - Artist
Anna is an incredibly talented young artist who resides in Athens, and her love for all things fantasy translates beautifully into her stunning, magical work. Her and Kris bonded over their mutual love of creating characters (and making them kiss), and they founded Lunaris Games together. She's often seen creating masterpieces on her iPad, but you can also find her basking on a rock in the middle of the ocean, attempting to lure sailors to their deaths.
Tara D. - Writer & Artist
Tara is our newest addition to the team, and co-creator of Errant Kingdom with Kris and Anna. They are one of those rare eldritch beings who can both create beautiful art and write wonderfully, which, frankly, is terribly annoying. They live in Seattle with a particularly vocal cat called Sai who often interrupts our meetings with loud peeps. Rumor has it that if you look them in the eyes for too long, you might turn to stone... if you're lucky.
Kevin N. - Writer
Kevin joined us after a few chapters of WTNC, and we've since refused to ever let him go. His writing is evocative, intelligent, and painfully witty; just like him. When asked what picture we could use for his bio, he requested a frog wearing glasses and a wizards hat. That tells you all you need to know about Kevin.
Marina B. - Background & Merch Artist
We were all long time admirers of Marina's work, so when she applied for our background artist position, we all shit a figurative brick and cried a bit (a lot). Her beautiful backgrounds breathe life into our games, and her ability to go from 0 - feral REAL FAST whenever Dungeons & Dragons is mentioned is a true feast for the senses.
Jude W. - Programmer
Jude is a normal human man who stays far away from us because he's smart, but he's also the best Unity programmer in the land. He has the patience of a saint for putting up with us.
Risks and challenges
Having successfully, punctually released an episodic visual novel over the last 10 months, and doing so with less resources than we have now, we have no doubt that we will be able to deliver the bi-monthly installments. We also have a team who are experienced in project management and merchandise procurement and fulfillment, so we are confident that the only challenge we may face will be if we run into any delays from the manufacturers of the rewards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
