About this project

The Lunar Ensemble aims to promote fresh, hot off the press contemporary music through commissions, collaborations and vibrant performances. We regularly promote and perform fresh new contemporary music composed by talented young composers from across America and Canada. Formed in 2009, this mixed ensemble features fine instrumentalists and singers affiliated with the prestigious Peabody Institute of the John Hopkins University.

2012 marks the centenary of Arnold Schoenberg's masterwork of the early 20th century, Pierrot Lunaire. Written and premiered a hundred years ago, the 21 movement piece revolves around selected poems of Albert Giraud, which focus on the macabre musings of the archetypal and oft depicted Pierrot character, a standard player of the italian Commedia Dell-arte. We are celebrating and commemorating this timeless work with a massive collaborative event, in conjunction with Peabody Conservatory, which we call the Pierrot Centenary Project.

Eight gifted, experienced and eminent composers from the Peabody composition community have been hand-selected to write music to the remaining 29 poems that complete the set of 50 that were originally written by Giraud. Each composer explores three or four poems, and creates in their own personal language and sound world the images of Pierrot. These selected composers, alongside their brand new compositions are:

Natalie Draper - Suite pour le poete maudit

Douglas Buchanan - Eingang

Joshua Pangilinan - Three Songs from Pierrot Lunaire

Lonnie Hevia - Violon de Lune

Sean Doyle - Harlequin Redux

Faye Chiao - moments colorés

Joshua Bornfield - Aspice Pierrot pendu

Evan Combs - Pierrot's Realm

We will be performing Pierrot Lunaire, along with these exciting new works, at several concerts between early october and mid december. However, in order to best share this exciting concert here in Baltimore, we're searching for funding and donations to assist in paying the costs of performing in Baltimore's illustrious Shriver Hall. The Lunar Ensemble has been given the opportunity, both by the Peabody Conservatory and by Shriver Hall, to perform in their fantastic space—but we need your help in order to succeed! Although we've been partially funded, there are substantial costs that go into an undertaking such as this, and our goal of raising $2000 will offset these costs. Without your generous support we might not be able to give back to the music community with this exciting undertaking!

With your help, the expert musicians of the Lunar Ensemble will perform these pieces throughout October, November and December, beginning with a composers' workshop on October 7th (featuring four of the new works), then touring the music to Fredonia, NY to perform at SUNY Fredonia, then performing all eight new works, in addition to Schoenberg's original Pierrot Lunarie, in two concerts at Shriver Hall in Baltimore. But we need your help in order to fund our Shriver concerts!
Music carries a message, and it longs to be communicated. With music we bring people together, and when people come to share our performances with us, they share in this message. As an ensemble we are dedicated to developing the musical traditions of the past, in order to better align our past with our present day, but we're also passionate about cultivating the voices of the rising composers of this generation. It is our aim to enlighten, inspire, and challenge our audiences as we break boundaries, explore new music, and to tie us all culturally to the art world's rich musical history to its exciting sonic future.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

The Lunar Ensemble
