Ellie Connelly and the Eye of the Vortex is a planned 124-page graphic novel of Victorian adventure and paranormal intrigue. Ellie Connelly, her friend Henry Button, and her Uncle Everett must race to discover the location of a legendary vortex of mystical energy, before the dark and mysterious Mystic Legion can take control of it for their own malevolent purposes!
I've been working on the comic now for several years, while supporting myself with contracting work as an illustrator. An adventure in the mold of Indiana Jones and Tintin, the first 32 pages have been published and are currently readable in the Archive at http://www.ellieconnelly.com/chapter-archive.php.
The goal of this Kickstarter project is to allow me to focus more of my energies on completing my book. I estimate that it takes me about twenty hours to complete each page - from writing and laying it out, to pencils, lettering, inking and coloring. And being an independent contractor, those twenty hours can be very hard to come by. At this rate it will be another six years or so before the story is finished, and at such a slow pace it is very difficult to build up any promotional momentum.
I realize that $25,000 is a lot of money, but this will cover my living expenses for an entire year - rent, groceries, and utilities - affording me the time I need to complete Eye of the Vortex.
My plans to publish the book include digital ( in the form of
four ebooks available in both pdf and cbz formats), as well as
collecting it into two 64-page print albums. I'm already working with a
translator to put together French language versions of the ebooks, and
will seek out a French publisher when the book is complete.
I'll continue posting the newly completed pages on the website for free (in both English and French), and will also release the ebook issues when they're completed.
Pledge at the $20 level and receive a special edition 4GB flash drive with a laser-etched logo, and access to ALL of the Ellie Connelly digital comics!
The money I raise from this project will also enable me to print a 64-page album when the first half of the book is complete, in both a softcover format and in a limited edition hardcover. These 8.5x11.5-inch albums will be printed in full color on thick white paper and squarebound for great longevity and many years of reading pleasure. The Hardcover edition of the first volume will include printed endpapers, and will ONLY be available for supporters of this Kickstarter project!
I'll be able to sell this book online and at conventions, hopefully generating the funds and laying a solid foundation for me to continue creating these stories. I'll also have more time to promote the comic as I'm releasing pages online.
So, what are you getting for your contribution? I’ve put together a lot of different levels of support, and you will receive lots of different things, from digital copies of the comics at the lower levels, and a USB drive to store them on, to signed print copies in the mid-range. You can even have your likeness put into the comic as one of several characters which haven’t been introduced yet! You can buy original art, like 9x12 pen & ink depictions of scenes from the comic (which I will use to promote the books as well), and even the original 14x17” artwork from the covers of the books.
Original art for the first Ebook, available at the $500 level
And finally you can bring me to your town for a reading and signing at
your local bookstore or comic shop. I’ve tried to design all of these
rewards with an eye toward allowing me to work on the comic, so all of
the items you’ll be rewarded with are either part of the process, or will help me promote the book!
who knows? If I raise enough money to be able to print Volume 2 as well, I’ll even add copies of that into the reward options!
If I manage to find a publisher for the book before I've completed it, then my plan is to take the money I would have spent self-publishing the album and will instead hire a colorist to help me finish the pages more quickly.
I'm excited about this project, as I feel like it will finally enable me to really actively work toward the dream I've had since I was fifteen years old, of being a professional comics creator supporting myself through my own characters and stories. Even if you aren’t able to contribute to this project, I hope that you’ll at least go to ellieconnelly.com and check out the comics I’ve got up there, and that you’ll tell your friends and help spread the word about my project.
Thanks for your time, and I look forward to your support!
