UPDATE - 25.12.2018 (REMEMBERING LANU)

Our old logo from previous version
Our old logo from previous version

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE! I hope you're having wonderful holiday! We have taken in a lot of feedback and suggestions and I guess I have some explaining to do. For those who remember our previous project called Lanu - Surviving Lanbridge is based on the same code but has gone through massive changes - unnecesery changes I must say. Somehow on this path we lost what made Lanu trully great - I guess it happens to a lot of small team game devs. So we have decided to bring the game back to it's glory! We will bring back most of the features that made Lanu stand out!

ETERNAL WINTER

So the story line of Lanu was completelly different. As much as we love 19th century - we understand limitations that it might bring to surviving eternal winter. We are currently in decision between two themes - near future that Lanu represented or fictional 19th century style with futuristic aspects - not steampunk cause we believe it's overused in gaming genre. We want to bring back the challenge in surviving eternal winter.

POLAR NIGHT

Part of the first version of Lanu that never saw the daylight in Kickstarter included Polar Night and we are bringing it back. It will give more challange in already challanging weather conditions where player will have to guide their town through 6 month long night. This will mean that player will have to gather enough resources to survive the long night time. It will limit ability to gather some of the resources and produce food from heathed farms and other buildings. It will require to gather enough wood to keep the lights on and keep citizens warm, cause when the lights go out - it's game over! We always wanted to make Lanu extremelly challanging and I guess we lost this goal somewhere on the way - but rest assured - we brought it back!

OLD STORYLINE

This was our old storyline and we want to follow it again. For those who have read it from Lanu project - feel free to skip ahead.

It was the year 2029. For more than a decade we had watched how weather slowly turned against humanity. How every winter became colder and summer hotter and how they tried to assure us that it was normal. That raising amount of people who died every year from extreme heat or horrifying cold was just normal, that there was nothing to worry about. It was natures way of adjusting and that there was no reason for concerns. We knew they lied. We knew something was wrong. But who were we to know the truth?

It was the morning of the 23rd of July, 2029. I was awoken by people marching by my house and making a sound that sounded like crunching snow. But it couldn't be. Had we just lived through another extremely hot summer day, and now snow? It couldn't be true. But as I stood up and saw my own breath coming out of my lungs. It worked like a switch like suddenly my body noticed that it was freezing cold. As my eyes focused on ice that covered my windows I realised that the only light in my room was from flashlights and torches that people held as they walked past my house. Something was wrong. I looked at the clock and it was midday. It couldn't be. I walked out of my house to see a starless night that gave no light towards earth and group of people marching towards the mountain that was nearby.

"It's the lord! I'm telling you. We all have sinned!"

"Don't be silly. It must be natures miracle!

"A miracle? I wouldn't call it that way. It's the end of the world."

People threw out many ideas as they walked by. It proved that I wasn't going mad. It was a sunless midday and that something had gone very wrong. It had caused a panic in our small remote town.

I joined the others to walk towards the mountain. I didn't know what people expected to see once they reached the top, but it definitely was not as we saw. There was nothing. It was so dark that you couldn't see past the light that covered earth from our torches. People started to cry and panic arises. It was out of our control.

The media was silent. There were no warnings issued, no explanation. Nothing. Like it never happened. All the phone lines were dead. You couldn't get hold of anyone who could have at least some explanation of what was going on. It was like we were disconnected and kept hidden from the rest of the world. People came up with even crazier theories and those who had religion close to their heart marched out to await the return of The Lord. It felt like we're back in the 20th century where science was still a joke in front of religion. Our town had gone mad. It was the darkness that played with our minds. The lost sense of day and night cycle. It felt like we were stuck in time.

Thankfully it wasn't the end. It lasted three days until the sun came back, but it had changed everything. We knew that we can't trust media or anyone. We had to prepare. We had to be ready for the worst. And we did.

The 2nd of February 2032. News had spread. It was the power of the internet that allowed us to let the world know of what was really going on and truthfully - we didn't have a clue of what was happening. But today was the day of the last broadcast. After 2 years of winter, media gave up telling lies and wished all the best for humanity and left us clueless on what to do next. There were protests across the world and panic was real. We were all terrified. Some people took the easy way out of this horrifying image of the new world, some tried to find answers. But knew that it was all up to us. We knew that nobody will come for rescue. We knew that if there will be a civilisation that will survive the never-ending winter - it will be LANU.

GENETICS

Part of the futurism theme that Lanu had was Genetics that allowed to research and modify citizen genetics. That included cold resistance, reduced food need and other aspects that helped to survive. I think it was a unique part of Lanu and we want to bring it back.

CURRENT UI IS TEMPORARY AND IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

Surviving Lanbridge city building real-time strategy game currently being developed by Lumi studios. Game takes place in 19th century. Game has no path to follow so it's up to player to decide the growth of Lanbridge. You can start by building farms, warehouses, lumber yards and other basic level buildings. Game's start goal is to produce enough vital resources like food, firewood and clothes to last through passive seasons (late autumn till early spring) where farming and other jobs will be limited. Game includes dynamic weather that affects gameplay. As your town grows - you will unlock law book, research table and economy putting you in charge of towns funds, taxes, manufacturing, laws and other aspects of game.

Game starts with couple of small houses and handful of citizens to start off with. Your first goal is to gather wood and build more buildings. Game starts in Spring so you have 6 months to prepare for the winter.

Food and firewood are must have to survive the first year. Options are many and farming is not the only way to produce food - you can hunt, fish or gather wild berries.

Lanbridge includes a family system where people will get married and have children if there is enough available housing. Small houses provide enough room for a couple to have one child, while large house will have enough room to house two families with 2 or more children. It's one of major ways to grow your family but with game's progress you will be able to accept citizens from other towns. At the beginning stage game has 4 major resources - food, wood, stone and iron.

Stone is required to build more advanced buildings and to upgrade existing ones to reduce the use of firewood (or more later in game - coal). Iron is needed to build tools that are required for many jobs - like woodcutting, mining and hunting. Citizens are able to do these without tools but with reduced speed and efficiency.

As the game progresses and population reaches a certain level - you will unlock economy, law book and research tree. This will enable currency and deeper management of your town. With economy people will have to buy food, pay rent and taxes which will go towards towns funds. You will have to manage ratio between jobs and population. If there won't be enough work available - this will cause people to become addicted to alcohol (spending money at the pub) lose their homes and become homeless. Homelessness level will affect your towns happiness and if left undealt with - will cause riots.

Law book enables you to take drastic measures against certain scenarios. It starts with adjusting working age and working hours. Allowing poor to get food coupons and rent reduction. Banning homeless and forcing them to leave the town and more. Each choice can affect your towns happiness. Citizens have randomly generated personalities - like religion and political believes - making every game unique.

Research tree will enable to research more advanced features and building related to industrial era that the game is based in. This includes factories, warehouses, medicine, new laws and resources like coal.

Medicine plays a huge part in second stage. At any moment your town can be hit by a major disease that you will have to research medicine for to save your population. Some diseases are minor and won't cause much problems but some could wipe out your whole population. Medicine research costs money and requires time. You have option to buy medicine from neighbour towns that might have already researched it but it costs a lot of money. Though this enables you to sell medicine to neighbour towns as well once they require it.

Trade will be enabled after building trade post or harbour which can be researched after unlocking economy. Trade post is the slowest method of trade and takes twice as long for resources to arrive at receiver but costs a lot less to build and research than harbour.

Harbour is used not only for trade - but also enables open sea fishing that can bring in a lot of food.

Dynamic weather affects gameplay in multiple ways. Harsh winters can bring blizzard that prevents citizens from working, dry summers affect farms and heatwaves affect citizens health and reduce working hours. Also, duration of seasons are random - meaning that short summers can affect the amount of food you can produce and long winters might make you run out of resources.

We are currently at super early alpha stage of the game. Most of stage one features are functional but has a lot of bugs. UI is primitive and will be shared as soon is finished. We were mostly focused on games mechanics and UI second. We are currently working on stage two features and more advanced AI. We are a very small team and have day jobs - so we require your help to enable us to work at least part time and put in more hours into games development.

We have a dream to make Surviving Lanbridge in one of the best town building strategy games ever. With very open mind towards communities' feedback and suggestions and with your help from backing our project - we believe that we can make this dream true - Together!

A huge thanks to Madison Denbrock for creating this unique song specially for Surviving Lanbridge trailer. Please check her out: https://madisondenbrockmusic.com/

She's a very talented musician and has a lot of great songs that is definatelly a must have for anyones playlist.

Risks and challenges

Optimizing the game to a stage that we want it to be in. We want to reach a large audience - but don't want to sacrifice the visual look of the game. Our plan is to optimize the game to a level where even low end computers could run it smoothly - but as well include textures and graphical setting for high end computers to enjoy the true beauty of Lanbridge.

A lot of design elements of current version are subject of change. We want to improve current buildings to be more modular - meaning more random and would look apart.

UI is still a huge stepping stone because we believe in simplistic UI that doesn't take much space on screen but there are multiple factors that we believe should be displayed at all times during gameplay - like weather status, money, population, citizen happiness, events like riots and diseases and other.
