About

It was the year 2029. For more than a decade we had watched how weather slowly turned against humanity. How every winter became colder and summer hotter and how they tried to assure us that it was normal. That raising amount of people who died every year from extreme heat or horrifying cold was just normal, that there was nothing to worry about. It was natures way of adjusting and that there was no reason for concerns. We knew they lied. We knew something was wrong. But who were we to know the truth?

It was the morning of the 23rd of July, 2029. I was awoken by people marching by my house and making a sound that sounded like crunching snow. But it couldn't be. Had we just lived through another extremely hot summer day, and now snow? It couldn't be true. But as I stood up and saw my own breath coming out of my lungs. It worked like a switch like suddenly my body noticed that it was freezing cold. As my eyes focused on ice that covered my windows I realised that the only light in my room was from flashlights and torches that people held as they walked past my house. Something was wrong. I looked at the clock and it was midday. It couldn't be. I walked out of my house to see a starless night that gave no light towards earth and group of people marching towards the mountain that was nearby.

"It's the lord! I'm telling you. We all have sinned!"

"Don't be silly. It must be natures miracle!

"A miracle? I wouldn't call it that way. It's the end of the world."

People threw out many ideas as they walked by. It proved that I wasn't going mad. It was a sunless midday and that something had gone very wrong. It had caused a panic in our small remote town.

I joined the others to walk towards the mountain. I didn't know what people expected to see once they reached the top, but it definitely was not as we saw. There was nothing. It was so dark that you couldn't see past the light that covered earth from our torches. People started to cry and panic arises. It was out of our control.

The media was silent. There were no warnings issued, no explanation. Nothing. Like it never happened. All the phone lines were dead. You couldn't get hold of anyone who could have at least some explanation of what was going on. It was like we were disconnected and kept hidden from the rest of the world. People came up with even crazier theories and those who had religion close to their heart marched out to await the return of The Lord. It felt like we're back in the 20th century where science was still a joke in front of religion. Our town had gone mad. It was the darkness that played with our minds. The lost sense of day and night cycle. It felt like we were stuck in time.

Thankfully it wasn't the end. It lasted three days until the sun came back, but it had changed everything. We knew that we can't trust media or anyone. We had to prepare. We had to be ready for the worst. And we did.

The 2nd of February 2032. News had spread. It was the power of the internet that allowed us to let the world know of what was really going on and truthfully - we didn't have a clue of what was happening. But today was the day of the last broadcast. After 2 years of winter, media gave up telling lies and wished all the best for humanity and left us clueless on what to do next. There were protests across the world and panic was real. We were all terrified. Some people took the easy way out of this horrifying image of the new world, some tried to find answers. But knew that it was all up to us. We knew that nobody will come for rescue. We knew that if there will be a civilisation that will survive the never-ending winter - it will be LANU.

LANU is a single player town building strategy game based in year 2032 when global freezing has overtaken planet earth. It's aimed to be a hard difficulty game by default that punishes player for every wrong move they make. Every research, production choice or town management choice like food rations or limiting firewood usage counts towards next day that can bring unforeseen weather or other conditions. With over 80 different buildings, many professions, over 30 resources and research tree with over 300 choices - every decision counts towards survival.

Game starts with basic town that is capable of producing wood and turning it into firewood. Food is produced through hunters shack by hunting live animals. These are all limited resources. With every day temperature drops even lower which affects firewood usage and people capability to work outside for long hours.

Players start goal is to research alternative methods of producing food, heating buildings and keeping people warm. It includes researching new building or upgrades for existing ones. Player has limited time since once the temperature reaches -40 - animals will slowly start to die from cold.

Beginning goals include researching mining - for coal, iron, stone and other. Researching heating upgrades for houses to use coal instead of firewood. Researching medicine , alternative food source and similar.

The more hash becomes the weather - the more advanced research is required. Game involves not only managing resources but town as well. It includes limiting food usage, limiting allowed house temperature to reduce fuel usage, increasing work hours and other aspects of game.

Player will be faced with need to research medicine and better clothes option, advanced manufacturing and refining of resources as well as synthetic materials.

Part of games goal is to find other survivals that could join your town and help with jobs. Every person has unique skills like biomedical scientist, Telecommunications engineering and bionic surgeon. Finding survivor with one of these many unique skills unlock unique research choices that could dramatically increase chances for towns survival or give you ability to save the town right when you think that there is no more hope. Finding advanced doctor could save a town filled with severally ill people or finding advanced fuels scientist could give you alternative heating methods right when you have ran out of resources. Every step counts and making wrong ones can be lethal.

As game advances - and advanced science and medicine has been researched - genetics option opens up. It gives ability to research and find ways to alter genes to make people more resistible to illnesses and cold. These methods take long time. player has choice to alter certain genetics before they have been completely researched. This however, depending on researches progress, gives risk of loosing lives, but as well could save town in times when there is no other way.

Each game of Lanu is aimed to last up to 12 hours - depending on players choices. Due to random events, random survivors that unlock certain building and huge research tree that can take player many ways - we see Lanu as hugely re-playable and making each game unique.

We are the best team in the world. And I say that not because I have huge ego - I say that because I love my wife to bits and it's just two of us working on Lanu title. Al-through - we have amazing friends and they have showed great interest in helping Lanu making reality.

My name is Maris. My background is based a bit on everything. A bit of graphical design, a bit on web design and development and a bit on 3D modeling. I realized my passion for games early on, but I never though of building one myself until last year where we just suddenly looked at each other and thought of the same thing - how amazing it would be to build a game together. And that's were foundation was set. With days and nights spent learning and working on ideas - nothing could stop us - and by saying that - nothing will.

Although we have to think of our day-jobs, rest of the free time get's put in Lanu's development. Every building used in Lanu is uniquely made from scratch by my wife. We put our heart and souls into this cause there is nothing more amazing in life than to find your true purpose and yes - we can proudly say that we are the lucky ones to have found it. And although we are asking for help from you - we can honestly say that we would finish Lanu no matter what. But it's not the ego talking again - it's just that we love what to do. So - the important question of the day - why then we need funding? Well - my PC was never made for this and is truly outdated. With Quadro 2000D it's hitting it's top limites and my i5 4th gen is not too happy either. But computer parts can be saved for and bought even used - the main reason is to give us ability to quit day-time jobs and fully dedicate our selves to Lanu, so that's where we need your help.

Risks and challenges

Like I mentioned previously - with or without funding - we will complete Lanu. Without funding it would take a lot longer and would face a lot delays due to limited time available.
As per now, the only risks I can name are unforeseen circumstances - like sudden global freezing, illnesses or other tragedies that would relate to us. Other than that we can promise that Lanu will get developed and will hit Steam store no matter what.
