After the honeymoon

We recently had a very challenging week in Cape Town. It was one of those times when it seemed everything that could go wrong, did!

It began when we took our car for routine service. The garage took it upon themselves to fiddle with things, before informing us of their diagnosis of what needed to be done. They ended up ruining a very important and expensive function – the brake system! This alone extended our stay in Cape Town significantly. We first had to find a more competent garage, who then not only had to service the car but, also fix their peer's damage. A big thanks to our Airbnb host for helping us with recommendations (and generally being so lovely and accommodating).

The next day, Joe lost his drone camera to the strong Cape Town winds. Below is one of her last shots.

Next up, one of Mutua’s cameras got stolen, while shooting some of the city’s epic views.

Being without a car and cameras is small fry, compared to our final challenge of the week. While shooting at a street party (part of the celebrations during Design Indaba week), Mutua was involved in a hit and run accident. The driver literally hit him, jumped out of his car and ran, fearing the worst.

It’s miraculous Mutua managed to make it through relatively unscathed and we are just so grateful for that. Thank you for all the kind words and prayers received during that frightening time.

South Africa: you have wowed us and you have tested us, in so many ways. Here are 2 shorts from some of the more magical moments, created by Joe and Josh, respectively:

Sorry to hear you have had trying times in Cape Town, but also glad to see you're all surviving and intact. So enjoying following your journey. If you're heading east from Cape Town towards Port Elizabeth, let me know - happy to host you and/or provide contacts.

So far I love what I've see. Great Job. Travel can have very unexpected occurrences....keep going though.........that's the only way to go.....forward. Best of Luck.

Thank you for the update and I'm so sorry to hear about all the misfortunes. I was starting to wonder about all the photos you promised.

I am a little disappointed though that you decided to showcase South Africa. The point of the project was to show urban Africa. I live in Britain and most people here already think a developed Africa is only in South Africa. How pleasing it would have been to show them other great cities across the Southern part of Africa.
