"At Sea" is an animated virtual reality short film by a group of students from Chapman University's Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. Our goal with this project is to challenge ourselves narratively, technically, and artistically, but above all else, to tell a story that makes the audience think, feel, and enjoy.
While we will be utilizing today's latest and most advanced technology to present the experience in virtual reality, the most important aspect of this project will always be the story. In fact, most of our production timeline is dedicated to refining and perfecting the story we will be creating. We don't want to spoil it for you, but we do want you to know how important it is to us!
A project this complex needs an immense amount of planning and visualization for an entire team to communicate one, clear idea. We are hiring storyboard artists, production designers, and concept artists to make sure we have a clear understanding of our story across the board before we begin production.
We are hiring 3D model and texture artists to create the environment of At Sea, and will be using the cutting-edge technique of photogrammetry for the creation of Noah. This consists of bringing in a model who will be scanned with high-resolution photographs into a 3D model that will be brought to life. To bring them to life, we will recruit an energetic motion capture performance artist, and will animate Noah using motion capture technology.
We will bring all of the assets and animation files into Unreal Engine to simulate the animation in realtime to create the VR experience. Meanwhile, our animation team will be fixing up the little details that can't yet be recorded with motion capture to enhance Noah's performance and make the experience more immersive and entertaining.
Once the project is complete, we get to share it with the world! You, our supporters, will have exclusive access to the VR Experience, as well as a standard video non-VR render of the story. We will submit the project to various film festivals and events, and will be leaders and entertaining storytellers in the virtual reality medium.
