About this project
100% Funded! We made it! Thanks to everyone who's backed the campaign so far. But it's not over til' the fat lucha taps. Now it's time for stretch goals:
The story so far...
A post-apocalyptic Luchador story about heroes, good versus evil, and a megalomaniac who goes by the name... Sokrates!
El Marvo is the first comic book from the Hawk & Cleaver publishing team, written by Ben Errington and Luke Kondor with art by Dan Butcher, Will Robson, and Vincent Cyril.
Seriously, this comic is going to suplex you right into the apocalypse. Don’t believe me? Here’s a tease:
The first 5 pages of El Marvo, issue 1! Download in high-resolution HERE.
Sounds kinda bonkers, right?
There's sentient warts and everything.
We personally think it's going to be great.
Hawk & Cleaver is a digital story studio. We make award-winning short films, iTunes chart-splitting podcasts, and we write books … like, lots of books.
Ben Errington is the guy who thunk up old Marvo way back in 2000-2001. He’s also the writer behind the psychopath revenge novel, Ten Tales Of The Human Condition, a furious short story writer, and apparently he’s a monster in the sack. (...his words)
Luke Kondor’s the guy who said ‘El Marvo, eh? I like it … what if we put him in a Mad Max style apocalyptic world?’ He’s also the guy who made a film in 7 days with no money, wrote a novel about an alien hipster in East London, and can be sometimes spotted practicing his moonsaults in a 24hr Tesco carpark in Manchester.
And Dan Butcher is the craziest of them all. He’s the guy who said ‘sure I’ll draw your Luchador in the future story. I’m sure it can’t be that - ah God is that a talking wart?!’ He’s also the creator of the incredible superhero web-comic, Vanguard. (Seriously, it’s really good.)
Also, Will Robson worked on the cover. Immediately afterwards he got a job at Marvel. Not saying that was because of us, but … coincidence? (Yeah, probably).
So let’s talk pledges, FIRST UP!
Here are the pledge levels in full...
Feeling extra generous?
£50 – Draw Me Like One of Your Splatter Folk
All of the above, plus be drawn into the last scenes of issue one as one of the many people living in the small town of Splatter.
£75 – Personalised Luchador Pinup
All of the above, plus big bad Dan Butcher will draw you as a Luchador (mask on or off, depending how you like it). Design it yourself and watch your own wrestler vigilante hero come to life!
£100 – H&C Workshop
All of the above plus something extra special. Are you a writer? Comic creator? Join Luke Kondor and Ben Errington for a one hour Skype session (ooh err) where they will discuss, critique and advise you on your short story, script or comic book idea.
£250 – Original Artwork (3 available)
All of the above plus get your hands on one of the original El Marvo comics from 2000-2001, written and hand-drawn by Ben Errington (see below).
Plus, we'll have some stretch goals that will unlock additional content once we hit these targets!
Sounds interesting … so take me back to the start. How did it all come about?
ORIGINS OF THE PROJECT
The project started way back in the year 2000-2001, written and drawn by Ben Errington. It was a straight up Spider-Man rip-off, drawing influence from almost every major Marvel property. There was a clichéd origin, a few knock-off villains, a love interest and a catch phrase – all pretty basic stuff.
But Ben kind of fell in love with the idea of creating an original superhero property with El Marvo, so he put his head together with Hawk & Cleaver colleague Luke Kondor to tell a new, totally different story with the Luchador warrior.
You like it?
Cool, the pledge button is just up top.
Or if you’d rather, here’s a few extra little something-somethings...
MUCK - THE WORLD OF TOMORROW
Muck is basically the planet gone to shit 200 years in the future – no borders, no governments, no law. Just one big continent built up of various colonies — mutants, scavengers, mercenaries, and would-be empires led by genocidal maniacs – you know the drill.
Think the post-apocalyptic world of 'Mad Max' and 'Fallout' but populated by a cast of heroes who wouldn’t be out of place in a modern day superhero movie franchise.
EL MARVO (Fernando Sanchez)
A Luchador wrestler vigilante, daubed in red and yellow, his face covered by a mask. His right leg is missing from the knee downwards but has been replaced by a steampunk style prosthetic. He’s the vengeful type, and after awaking in a strange future world after two centuries of cryo-sleep, he’s pissed. Wouldn’t you be?
KNUCKLE DUSTER (Ibrahim Greycloud)
Ibrahim is a kid out to prove his worth to his father, the leader of a colony that is going up against the evil rule of Sokrates. When he meets El Marvo, his purpose becomes clearer and he adopts the persona of Knuckle Duster, a tech-savvy brawler.
GO GET 'EM GIRL (Madeline Moonshine)
Madeline has a personal vendetta against the dictatorship of Sokrates after her brother is murdered by one of his goons. Teaming up with El Marvo and Knuckle Duster, she vows to take on the oppressive force and free Muck from its grasp. She’s a scrappy girl with a slight disfigurement on the right side of her face, her weapons of choice a meat cleaver in one hand and machete in the other.
8-BALL (Alias unknown)
One of Sokrates’ generals and right-hand men. A mad man, armed with a pair of cosmic revolvers and a magical obsidian sphere that looks kinda like a magic 8-ball.
HOW ABOUT AN AUDIO PREQUEL?
'Enormes Locos Violentos' is a prequel story which focuses on Luchador wrestler El Marvo before his self-imposed cryo-sleep which saw him wake in a post-apocalyptic future. Narrated by Josh Curran and taken from Hawk & Cleaver's popular podcast series 'The Other Stories'.
OH, AND HERE'S THE OFFICIAL EL MARVO THEME SONG
COOL, SO WHAT’S NEXT?
We’re aiming to fund the first issue with this campaign and eventually tell the first arc of the story over a 4/5-issue mini-series.
OKAY SURE. SO WHEN DO I GET MY COMIC?
Dan is set to get to work as soon as we clear our £2000 funding goal. You digital-folks should receive a sizeable ding in your inbox about 5-6 weeks after that.
And you physical people … well, as you may well know, it’s not such a small world after all, and printing, packing and shipping takes time, about 2-3 weeks more in fact.
SO WHAT NOW?
All that’s left is to pledge, make some tea and biscuits, and prepare yourself for a one-of-a-kind journey to the land of Muck!
And if you don’t want to back us yet, then maybe we should pass you over to someone who knows a thing or two about a thing or two.
Take it away, 8-Ball.

Risks and challenges
This is our first comic book project. Sure, there are risks involved, but we've built up a solid network of creators who are practically holding our hands throughout the entire process.
On top of that, we've built a solid track record of consistently delivering on projects, whether that's in our books or in our podcasts, and we're looking forward to proving our worth to the Kickstarter community.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
