A Pirate's ABC Adventure; real adventure for real kids.
A Pirate's ABC Adventure is 54+ pages of full color, full page artwork. Learning and an exciting adventure in a quality binding.
"A Pirate's ABC Adventure is one of my read-aloud books. My students love this book. The illustrations are witty and well-done, and the text is humorous, without being dumbed down for kids. This book is a staple of our class library."
Jay DeVine, Teacher
Hello And Thank You For Your Time
My primary Kickstarter goal is to get A Pirate ABC Adventure printed and into the hands of kids. I wrote this book a couple of years ago for fun and shared it with friends who shared it with teachers. Everyone has loved it! Your backing will assist me in doing a quality hard cover printing and allow me to begin distributing A Pirate ABC Adventure to students, teachers and libraries so more people can enjoy it.
I chose the pirate theme because pirates are a life-long love of mine. For most people, the romanticized pirate brings to mind a sense of adventure and freedom. Using that passion and identification I provoke a level of interest and involvement in the readers that will make the process of learning more fun and effective.
The story, rich art, and action words have kids of all ages loving this book. When we tested sample printings of the book at homes and in classrooms the response was 100% positive. This book is an experience that gets kids engaged in learning and they want to return to the book again and again.
A Pirate ABC Adventure will be a hardcover book and feature 54+ full page, full color, exciting art for each letter of the alphabet. Both upper and lower case will be displayed in a common font on the facing pages as well as the story. I will be printing the book using the traditional offset method which yields an all around higher quality. There will be 54+ pages as each facing page will contain a word and part of the story, see examples.
What This ABC Book Offers
I believe that A is for apple is way too simplistic for most kids - too boring and forgettable. This book is written for kids from roughly 5 to 8-years-old. Each of the 26 letter pages is a full color piece of art that follows the story of a pirate on an adventure.
This book has been test run through several classrooms and private homes. Every kid of varying age (5 to as high as 10) of various genders and races loved it without fail. The adults love the intense interest the kids have in the exciting, and often humorous, adventures of the pirate and the level at which they engage in the discussion.
How Kickstarter Works
You pledge whatever amount of support you would like to.
Only if the project is successfully funded (we get 100% of our funding goal) does your card get charged.
If the project does not reach its funding goal, your card is never charged.
Kickstarter has a very detailed and thorough help section that includes answers to every question you could have about backing a Kickstarter campaign like mine. For more information on how Kickstarter works see their Backer Questions FAQ.
What The Project Needs
Most importantly, spread the word!
Your pledge is important and you will get some great rewards for it but we really need you to spread the word! Let anyone you think would be interested in this project know about it.
- Parents of awesome kids
- Pirate lovers
- Cool people in general
It would sincerely help a great deal if you just let people know about the campaign. If you are active in pertinent forums, have a Facebook page, or any avenue to let people know about the campaign - with out annoying them of course! Don't spam, just let people you think would be interested know about this project. Thanks!
Why This Book?
There are many reasons I want to produce this book but essentially I want to give kids something really fun and cool to learn with. I want every kid that reads this book to feel like they spent a day at Disneyland or the movies.
I want to present words to kids that are action oriented and more advanced conceptually, not just longer and more difficult. I also think there aren't enough good pirate books out there. On one hand we have all the Disney stuff (it is awesome but all centers around a handful of actors and a detailed and limited pirate world) and on the other we have very simplistic and cartoon pirate books.
What I Have Done
- The book is art complete and laid out
- Testing has been done in schools and homes - 100% positive
- Rewards are designed
- All costs have been researched for the best price and quality (see below for more info)
- Print and ship the hardcover book
- Create and ship the rewards
- Make the book available to the public
The costs (with shipping) to print 1,500 hardcover copies of the full sized, full color book on quality paper using the offset process will be close to $7,000. In order to fulfill the rewards and ship all the books to backers and other locations such as schools, libraries, and other institutions the total cost jumps to around $13,000. The reason I am trying for 15k is that after the fees from Amazon and Kickstarter (about 10% total) I am left with 14k with only a little padding for errors or cost changes. Remaining money will be used to ship more books to the above mentioned institutions.
"This looks like a grand book and we'd be happy to promote it. The bumper sticker is fantastic! Best reason I've ever seen connecting Pyrates and literacy (not two things that often go together in folks minds)."Capt. John Swallow, NOLA Pyrate Week

T Shirt design ideas. I will include the Kickstarter backer badge in the design as well.
So far I have only one stretch goal should this project exceed its funding goal by only $1,000 dollars I will get an 18 x 22 inch full color map of the island printed, folded, and inserted into the book. Other than that I would love your feedback on stretch goals.

Risks and challenges
The book is complete, the rewards are designed, and I have researched all the costs involved. There are no serious risks I can see. I am concerned about getting the rewards out in time if things explode and are ultra successful, but I will do my best to get them out and will communicate frequently with you my wonderful backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
