About this project

 SUCCESS! - Stretch Goal #1 – $3,500

Joe Kashnow is an American Veteran who lost part of his leg to a roadside bomb while serving in Iraq in 2003... but that's not the end of Joe's story. Today, he uses stand up comedy to confront his wounds and to help others heal through humor. Joe has already agreed to participate in our film. Now we need the funds to travel to Joe so that we can tell his story. Can you help us get there?

 Stretch Goal #2 – $5,000

Trauma is a part of the entire human experience and is therefore international in scope. Our intention is to eventually take this film around the world. Right now, by raising an additional $5,000, we will be able to start that journey as we travel to Canada to explore trauma and healing with our neighbors to the North. We are excited to add this component and need your help to do so.

 Stretch Goal #3 – $8,000

It's time to go back to Haiti and re-connect with several Haitians who experienced the earthquake in very different ways than I did. By contrasting my experience with the experiences of Haitians themselves, we will be able to gain new insight into trauma across cultures and experiences that differ greatly from one another. It will take $8,000 to transport our crew and equipment to Haiti for the purpose of exploring this important angle. We need your help to do this. Can you help?

By supporting this film, you are helping to create something that can help to inspire and guide people who suffer from psychological trauma. This could be someone you will never meet or it might be your mother, brother, neighbor or friend. The truth is, there are many people who have been traumatized and don't even realize it. They are imprisoned in a cell for which there is a key.

I became one of the psychologically wounded when I lived through the devastating earthquake in Haiti in January of 2010. I was surrounded by death and unable to escape the horror. As a result, I began to have nightmares and visions that sometimes left me with extended periods of loneliness, crushing depression and despair. I regularly struggled to identify with those around me. I felt stranded and alone, with each echo pushing me farther from those I loved. Almost 4 years later, I knew that I had to begin searching for any glimmer of light within the darkness.

That's when I decided to make this film, not just for me but for the millions of people who are presently suffering in silence.

I believe that, by exploring with openness and honesty – sharing the stories of others, talking to professionals and exploring healing techniques and concepts – we can uncover pathways to understanding and hope. Furthermore, for those who have not yet been subjected to a traumatic event, I believe that this film can better-equip them to survive a traumatic experience.

Whether through war, natural disaster, abuse, exposure, traumatic loss, an accident or other jarring event psychological trauma is a faceless assailant. It leaves countless lives suffering in silence. This film is about shattering that silence. It is time to expose the isolation and find a way for those affected to once again belong and return to the lives they left, not in spite of, but because of their scars. It is time to speak the unspeakable.

Surviving Trauma (working title) is a very personal film for me. I also feel it is a film that has the potential to help others who suffer from their own traumatic experiences. I hope this film will educate all of us about psychological trauma so that more and more people can join the conversation.

With this film, we are seeking to explore the many angles of trauma. Some of those include:

  • PTSD
  • Community Violence
  • Complex Trauma
  • Domestic Violence
  • Early Childhood Trauma
  • Intergenerational Traumatic Memory
  • Medical Trauma
  • Natural Disasters
  • Neglect
  • Physical Abuse
  • Refugee and War Zone Trauma
  • School Violence
  • Sexual Abuse
  • Traumatic Grief

With this film, we hope to explore approaches to treatment and healing. Some of those may include:

  • Somatic Experiencing
  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy
  • Interpersonal Therapy
  • Dialectical-Behavioral Therapy
  • Psychosocial Intervention
  • Art Therapy
  • Psychomotor Therapy
  • Spiritual Healing
  • and more...

In order to tell this story properly, we feel it is necessary to look at as many sides of trauma as we possibly can. For that reason, we hope to speak to:

  • Victims/Survivors
  • Family & Friends
  • UPDATE – thought leaders in the world of treatment who have CONFIRMED that they will participate: Peter A. Levine, PhD, Vincent J. Felitti, M.D., Dr. Daniel J. Siegel
  • Wish list:  - Maggie Kline, LMFT - Robert Scaer, M.D. - Bessel van der Kolk, M.D. - Steven Porges, M.D. and more)

How Kickstarter works:

  • First, you decide that you would like to contribute toward the success of this film.
  • Second, you look at the contribution ("reward") levels on the right-hand side of the page and select one that appeals to you the most.
  • Third, you submit your payment information through Amazon.com's secure, online form (Kickstarter takes you there automatically when you start clicking).
  • Fourth, because your card will not be charged unless the campaign is successful in raising the minimum amount, set the date on your calendar when the charge will eventually be billed to your card (Amazon will tell you that date once the transaction is complete).
  • Fifth, make sure the funds are available on that card on that date.
  • Sixth, spread the word! If you have contributed then we believe that you want this to happen. Help us to reach and exceed our minimum goal by encouraging friends, family members and others to participate. This whole system of funding is called "crowdsourcing" because it requires a "crowd" of people to make it work!

THANK YOU! WE HAVE REACHED OUR MINIMUM GOAL! THE FILM IS BEING FUNDED!

The primary goal of this Kickstarter campaign is to raise a minimum of $25,000. If successful, this money will be used to:

  • Travel to critical interviews within the continental US
  • Fulfill our reward commitments

Naturally, with a film of this magnitude, $25,000 isn't enough to do all of the things that need to be done. We are only beginning to scratch the surface. Please look at what is possible if we are able to exceed our primary goal...

In addition to myself as the writer/director, an incredible team is already formed around this project. As stated, we are all working for free. Producers, a cinematographer, illustrators, photographers, musicians and more are already donating their time and talents to bring this film to life.

If I can be totally honest with you, if we are able to significantly exceed our Kickstarter goals, I would love to be able to compensate these critically important people for the incredible work that they are doing to bring this film to life. In my humble opinion, by volunteering so much before anyone else even knew this project existed, these folks are genuine heroes to the potential thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of people who may be helped by this film. If we can raise the kind of funding that this film deserves, I would love to honor their sacrifice by compensating them.

Hey, a guy can dream!

Risks and challenges

THE GOOD
I have been making professional films, music videos, television and web content for more than 15 years. Presently, I co-own The Story Shop with my friend and business partner, David Neidert (www.thestoryshop.tv).

Through The Story Shop, we are already making this film. Several important interviews have been filmed and a team of professionals has rallied behind it. The team presently includes: producers, a director of photography, a graphic designer, a photographer, a composer and several production assistants. I am the writer and director. I will be editing too.

THE BAD
With our production hub centering around Indianapolis, Indiana, and our lack of production funds, we are limited to only telling stories in our region. Obviously, as trauma is a part of the global human experience, the telling of this story should be global in scale.

Without funding, we lack the ability to increase the reach of the film.

THE UGLY
If we don't get enough money to carry this film outside of Indiana, it will be dreadfully limited in its scale. Without the financial help of our friends (and some people we don't yet know), this film could easily die on the vine. Given the importance of this issue to millions who suffer in silence, we simply can't allow that to happen.

THE AMAZING
Quite literally, every dollar that is contributed to the making of this film will shape the film into a better version of itself. That means that, by partnering with us, you are actually improving the film! Consider what that means. More angles will be explored. More stories will be told. More people will see it. More understanding can happen. And all of that is possible by doing nothing more than pre-ordering a copy of the finished film!
