About this project

Dynasties of Ancient Egypt rise and fall. Will your rule be strong enough to survive? Build your society, feed your people, and please the gods. Protect your citizens from invaders and secure their places in the afterlife!

IUNU (uh-wah-noo) is a game for 2-4 players set in the ancient Egyptian city of the same name, the city of pillars. Also known as Heliopolis, it was a center for Egypt's political elite and their machinations.

Plan carefully, expand your influence, gather citizens around you, and your dynasty may just stand the test of time. Welcome to IUNU!

IUNU is the #2 game in the Sanders Select Series of games, which are all designed & illustrated by Todd Sanders. Besides their clever mechanisms, they all also share a distinct style often described as minimalist, almost poetic.

They Who Were 8, the #8 game in the series was the first one published, in 2016. After IUNU, we are planning to make the #1 game in the series, Mr. Cabbagehead's Garden, a wonderfully quirky solo game.

THE GAME PIT

"Fantastic interesting art ... the gameplay was interesting every turn ... looks good and plays well."

"This was a fantastic game, it is way deeper than anything of its kind has any right to be ... I thoroughly enjoyed it ... probably the best game I played at the [UK] Game Expo."

CREAKING SHELVES

"There are a number of different ways to approach this game, the interaction is at a very good level, and the minimalist graphical style, even in prototype form, is a treat. Well worth checking out!"

We'd love for you to try IUNU before you back the campaign! The game has been implemented on Tabletopia, and you can play for free here:

Todd Sanders lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he works as a graphic designer, publisher and furniture maker.

For the past six years he has also been designing boardgames and is well known in the Print and Play community on BoardGameGeek.com. He likes designing games that are quick to play but have clever strategic elements to them and strong thematic artwork.

His publishing imprint – Air and Nothingness Press publishes works of French surrealist poetry in translation by Robert Desnos, and fantasy and science fiction from Steph Swainston and Jonathan L. Howard.

We expect to fulfill all rewards from within the EU, and as a result EU backers do not have to worry about customs or VAT.

We are not able to offer multiple-game pledge levels through the campaign because we need to have a clear picture of how many copies to make - which will be just a few more than we need for the campaign. Since we already subsidize the shipping costs, a bulk pledge would not even save any money.

However, we do expect to have a post-campaign pledge manager via Backerkit, which allows us to manage stock levels.

Shipments to backers outside of the EU will have the most updated EUR value of 19 USD declared as the value of the package (currently 18 EUR). That's roughly equivalent to 25 CAD / 25 AUD / 19 CHF / 2140 JPY. The same applies for the $9 pledge level, with the corresponding amount declared. Note that we can not be responsible for any customs fees.

Tracking is not offered through this campaign. If tracking is important to you, please contact us via the KS messaging system before the campaign is over.

Please note that we can not take any responsibility for any lost or damaged copies to Hungary, Russia, South America, Africa or Antarctica.

What You See Is What You Get - this is our doctrine, and we like to run simple, straightforward campaigns. We are aware that add-ons and/or stretch goals would increase the funding total. However, we have already thrown everything into this game - a lot of time, effort, and money. We intend to print with the highest quality materials, and we let you, our fans, decide which version you want.

We also want to offer the game at the cheapest cost possible - and that is incompatible with stretch goals. We'd have to add "hidden" profit in the pledge levels that we can then "spend" to give you stretch goals - nothing is for "free". Therefore, raising money beyond our goal does not give us extra money on hand to create stretch goals.

Furthermore, because the games are made in Europe in a small print run, we do not benefit from economies of scale by producing a few more copies of the game.

We do not offer add-ons (not even our other games) during the campaign, because we want to keep our operations simple and deliver efficiently. We may however be able to offer a post-campaign chance to obtain other games, if stock levels and our operations allow. We are in this for the long run, so it does not help us to squeeze a few more dollars from a few backers, if we would disappoint *all* backers. We have a reputation for shipping on time or early, and this is how we minimize the risk of missing our deadlines.

Finally, we do not pay anyone to give an opinion on our games.

Todd Sanders is the creative mind behind this and many other games we hope to publish in the future. He is a joy to work with, and we are very proud to be able to make professionally printed games out of his very popular PnPs.

We are also very grateful to yet again have the help of David Turczi, (co-)designer of [redacted], Anachrony, Days of Ire and much more. Dave's input was extremely valuable in shaping what IUNU is today.

While Todd is overall responsible for the graphic identity of IUNU, there has been input by Viktor Csete, who has helped with the graphic design of the campaign and the prototypes made for reviewers.

Significant improvements were suggested and made to the rules and the rulebook by Paul Grogan of Gaming Rules!, who is the chief rulebook editor.

What in many ways tied the team together was Alvin Chen's project managment, which helped us coordinate this project and finally bring it to Kickstarter.

Finally, we'd like to thank the playtesters of the earlier versions of the game, including those following Todd on BoardGameGeek, those who gave feedback at Cardboard & Sun 2016 and at SPIEL'16, and the players of the Litsa board game club.

Risks and challenges

All of our many previous campaigns have been fulfilled, with rewards either having arrived or currently in transit. We are working with a manufacturer we have worked with before, and we are confident in our ability to deliver the game and any additional materials. That said, unforeseen events may affect how quickly fulfillment is conducted, and the graphics and components seen here are subject to change (however improbable). We will be exhibiting at Essen, and it is possible that some backers or other people may have the game in hand before you do, although we plan to ship your games first. Note that our goal is to ship the game on time, by the dates listed on the pledge levels. Shipping a package is different than delivering a package. We do not deliver your game; the shipping company does. Therefore, delivery times will vary according to your local postal service. Once we ship, the shipment is the responsibility of the shipping company. If tracking is important to you, please let us know before pledging. If your reward does not arrive, it is returned to us, so we need you to patiently wait until that happens. Many times we have re-sent a reward only for the backer to receive both the original and the replacement. Informal currency conversions made on this campaign may not be accurate by the time you read this and may therefore result in seemingly cheaper prices in the future. The story, characters, and incidents portrayed in this game are fictitious. No identification with actual persons or products is intended or should be inferred. Many modern societies pretend to be a bit more egalitarian, but maybe the pyramidal caste system isn't that different from today. Beware of anyone telling you to just eat your bread and be happy about it, even if it comes with Nutella! By backing this project, you indicate that you have read, understood, and agreed with the above. If you have any questions, please contact us directly via the KS messaging system.
