You all know the story, it's as old as time. Boy meets boy and boy's brother. Boy marries boys' sister. Boys love history, and games. Historical games.

So, they all sit down, read a ton of books, play a ton of games, and design a hell of a board game.

That board game is Byzantio / Nekken. Well, its's kinda two games. In one.

We took that design, asked you to fund it, and we all end up with some wonderful cardboard & wood that we can use to plot and scheme our way to the throne.

Much like Gear & Piston, we expended a lot of sweat, tears and even some blood (we experimented with custom sheet metal dice) to bring this game to the world. Lefteris & Alexandros tested & retested ideas, came to Essen, gave interviews, and generally were swell fellas.

Everything went like Nutella on a warm day, and we had games, we had packing peanuts, we had boxes. Almost everything, that is, because the USA-bound shipment of backer rewards took a little extra time to get going.

So, when asked to help us thank you for supporting the game, it was a no-brainer that Byzantio / Nekken would follow in the footsteps of that other campaign that's running right now, and contribute towards giving backers from the USA a little somethin' somethin', and boardgamers everywhere some more content for the game.

A few emails later, we had it:

We know, we know. We talked a lot about expanding Byzantio, about Saracens & mercenaries & the treasury and... well, that's still aways from coming to your friendly local crowdfunding site (playtesting, you see), but we thought we might push something simple & fun, that does not radically change the game, but still offers more variety; to wit, 9 new events:

Here's what they do:

Byzantio

  • Chaos: Playing order is reversed. The player that is last in turn order becomes the first player, the second-to-last becomes the second, and so on.
  • Cult: Roll the die to determine the provinces where the cult takes hold of local superstitions. Each player must remove one of their garrisons from any city within the affected areas.
  • Duel: Roll the die. If there are more than one Pretender token in a province matching the number on the die, the players that the tokens belong to roll the die once to see who wins their duel. The winning player may then send the Pretender token(s) of losing player(s) to any province of their choice.
  • Quarantine: Roll the die to determine which provinces are blockaded by Imperial forces. For the next 5 rounds (until the next event), players may not take any action that would add or remove any garrison tokens in the affected provinces.
  •  Storm at sea: For the next 5 rounds (until the next event), no player may use sea lanes to campaign. Advance and all other actions may happen normally.
  • Wave of support: Roll the die to determine which provinces develop strong patriotic feelings. Each player may take a free Muster action in one city within those provinces.

Nekken

  • Chaos: Playing order is reversed. The player that is last in turn order becomes the first player, the second-to-last becomes the second, and so on.
  • Duel: Roll the die. If there are more than one Pretender token in a province matching the number on the die, the players that the tokens belong to roll the die once to see who wins their duel. The winning player may then send the Pretender token(s) of losing player(s) to any province of their choice.
  • Volcano eruption: Players may not take any action involving their tribal Leader token for the next round. Only the Expel, Bribe and Negotiate actions are allowed.

You can mix the new 6/3 events with the 4/3 old ones, and just like in the variant described in the game rules, pick 4 to place in rounds 6, 12, 18, 24 / 6, 13, 20 and reveal them when reaching that round.

Or, to familiarize yourself with the new events, you can set the game up as usual, substituting a specific "old" event with one from the new set.

In any case, the effect is the same: more variety, more ways that one game can be different the next, and more challenge for the players.

But what if you have no idea about Byzantio / Nekken?

Well, in short, it is a game of medieval intrigue in the time that the Byzantine Empire. Having just finished the partial reconquest of much of formerly lost territory, the emperor that made it happen died, without heirs. The players, heads of the four historical dynasties of Byzantio, attempt to be the ones to succeed the emperor.

On the reverse side of the game board lies Nekken, with the imposing volcano looming over the namesake city. The players use the same game mechanisms as Byzantio, to lead their tribe into the desolate wastelands, trying to dominate what is left of their homeland following the eruption that destroyed the city that they until just recently shared peacefully with their fellow tribes.

As you can see to your immediate right, you can also exchange your hard(or not so hard)-earned money for a spanking new copy of Byzantio through this campaign.

Similarly to that other thing we're doing these days, we have placed a limit on the amount of copies available through this campaign, to make sure we can deliver what we promise. In addition, we have very, very limited supplies left, so after we see the response to this campaign, and make a proper stock count, we might increase them.

NOTE: There is no limitation for the $5 pledge reward. Anyone can pledge for it.

Note 1: The amounts in currencies other than USD were calculated with Google's currency converter when the campaign started. Exchange rates fluctuate every day, and your payment provider may convert them to different amounts when you make your pledge.

Note 2: Anyone can pledge for the $5 level, not just past backers.

Limits & Multiple copies

$1 / $5 rewards: You may add $1 / $5 (or more, if you are feeling generous) per set to your pledge in order to receive multiple sets.

$65 / $75 / $85 rewards: Limit of 1 base game per backer. We save no money in shipping two games (it's actually more expensive), and since this is not being fulfilled by a large team (like last time, before Spiel), we can't do bulk packages. Also, last time we tried it, and it was terrible - delays, complications and no money saved. You can add $1/$5 (or more) for each copy of Event Set I that you would like.

Even though Byzantio (and Gear & Piston) were quite successful, we've discovered that we didn't charge enough, and that there's all sort of expenses in (gasp!) running a company. So, we need to ask you to help us make these. Please don't make us dip into the Nutella Fund.

Backers from the USA that also backed the original Byzantio / Nekken campaign need only pledge $1 to get the Event Set I. Following the end of the campaign, we will check that to make sure that only eligible backers receive the set at that price. To see if you are eligible, first check to see if you are in the USA (to some, this might be less obvious than one would expect), and then click https://www.kickstarter.com/profile/backings to see if you've backed Byzantio / Nekken in the past.

Backers from everywhere else only need to pledge $5. This is the bare minimum we need to produce, pack & ship the tiles, and is in keeping with prices at places like the BGG store.

While we are not "branding" this campaign as a "Pay-What-You-Want" campaign, we will graciously accept any amount above $1/$5.

As you might notice, we also offer pledge rewards for the full game. While you may already own it, there's many more out there that don't, so tell them it exists by sharing the campaign on Twitter, Facebook and BoardGameGeek.

To make sure that we can

The Event Set I will only be available directly from LudiCreations. They will not be available through distribution channels, and will not be available on the BGG store.

If we have any left over from this campaign, we will offer the set on our website for 5 EUR (6.88 USD - the discount calculations on the rewards list include this). To preserve the trust that our backers put in us, we will not be making any exceptions to this.

The set will also be available at Spiel 2014 for a similar amount, or free with a minimum purchase. We reserve the right to make promotional deals, bundles and offers to promote Gear & Piston and other LudiCreations products. But fear not, our backers are our first priority, and as we have demonstrated time and again, we aim that the campaign to launch a product of ours is the cheapest way to ever get that product.

Byzantio / Nekken: Event Set I will be shipped from Finland, once the tiles have been produced.

Byzantio / Nekken copies will be shipped from Germany, soon after the campaign concludes.

In both cases we are using postal services, not any fulfillment company. We will try to ship to the furthest destinations first, but please understand that due to the nature of this big, beautiful, (almost) round planet of ours, some backers may receive the rewards before you do.

For backers outside the EU that are getting the base game, we will state the gift value as 35 EUR (you pay for the main game, everything else is "free"), which should bring it under most thresholds for customs duties.

Once more a big thank you to Lefteris, Alexandros and Anestis, three individuals with lots of glory ahead of them. We'd also like to thank Mateusz for his fantastic illustrations, and Maciek for tolerating constant graphic design abuse from us, and whoever invented stroopwaffels for giving us another sweet thing to put Nutella on.

AVATARS:

Risks and challenges

There is of course always a risk that the factory will be late with producing the tiles, but they haven't so far, and we are inclined to believe that this will continue. We gained a lot of experience with fulfilling our first campaigns, and intend to use it to deliver on time. The rewards for the Gear & Piston and Byzantio / Nekken campaigns have been delivered to everywhere but the USA, to which the pallets are now on their way to. The Ambassadors campaign rewards are being fulfilled at this very moment, and the Boardgames That Tell Stories book is in the process of being finished. For more information on those campaigns, please use the respective comments pages, or contact us directly.
We are aware that running two campaigns at the same time can have its own challenges, but since the Gear & Piston: The Americans and Byzantio / Nekken: Event Set I share several steps in the process of fulfilling the rewards for both, we are confident that we can deliver what we promise.
