WANT FRESH, ZINGY & AUTHENTIC TACOS AT HOME?
Hola! We’re Sarah & Otis Frizzell. A taco lovin’ husband and wife team that want to share our flavours with the world. It all started in 2011 on our honeymoon in LA. We fell in love with the Californian taco trucks pumpin' out tasty, fresh, authentic deliciousness. The food truck concept is HUGE in the States and gaining momentum everywhere in the world, but hasn’t really hit Aotearoa yet. There are a few popping up, but none have the same aesthetic as the classic Californian Taco Trucks. We wanted to start the food truck revolution here in NZ. BUT. Before we could start making tacos from a taco truck, we had to do things properly. So we embarked on a food odyssey through Mexico, where we fell under the wing of legendary Mexican Chef; Ruth Alegria. She showed us the vibrant local mercados packed from floor to ceiling with chillies and fragrant spices. We ate at all her favourite taco joints, sampling everything from sheep testicles to grasshoppers. We ate A LOT of tacos. *ahem* All in the name of research.
On our return home, we bought a truck, filled it with a kitchen and on May 14th 2013, The Lucky Taco was born.
In the last 2 years, we’ve carved our place as the best tacos this side of Mexico and been voted one of the BEST food trucks in the world by Expedia.
Last year we developed a range of Lucky Taco hot sauce, initially for the truck. Now it’s in a handful of cafes, deli’s and supermarkets nationwide.
It’s been an incredible journey so far. There’s just one problem. We’re just one truck. If you don’t live in Auckland, you can’t try Lucky Tacos. *sad taco face*. We want to change that and offer people an alternative to what’s currently out there in the supermarkets.
We want you to enjoy our fresh, zingy authentic tacos at home, any night of the week.
In order to do that, we need your help to produce and manufacture 2 x Lucky Taco kits, Chipotle Chicken and Sizzlin’ Steak.
Plus, accompanying Mexican pickles that will be available in supermarkets nationwide. First NZ. Then the world.
MEXICAN PICKLES - *not available through KS / but will be available for nationwide distribution in supporting retailers if project is fully funded*.
We need cash to move forward. But just as importantly, we want backers. We want all our amigos to get behind us and make this happen. AND be the first in-line to try our Lucky Taco Kits! We wanted to use Kickstarter as a platform to share our story and to sneakily make you crave Lucky Tacos *nya ha haa*. Having strong links in the US and the UK, Kickstarter seemed like the appropriate choice for us. Oh, and did we mention that it’s Sarah’s birthday on the 6th July? The launch date of this campaign. So instead of the expensive champagne, chocolates and flowers you were going to send her - make a pledge! Help us turn our taco dreams into a tasty reality.
WHERE THE MONEY WILL GO?
• Julian Geraets - The Director - who we paid in tacos • Kim & Steve from Claude & Co - Creative geniuses & script helpers • Dan Bussell - Amazing Designer and Lucky Brand Guardian - who we pay in tacos • Jim Hall - Sound Engineer extraordinaire (and bloody legend) - who we will pay in tacos • Mark 'DJ Slave’ Williams - That Voice over guy - who really likes our tacos • Louis AKA Louie the dog - excellent canine talent in the video - who really loves floor tacos (or any floor food) • Andy Higgs & Oliver Higgs - father & son taco talent - who will do anything for a starring role (and tacos) • Mr Vintage - our distribution amigos who also make Lucky gears in exchange for tacos • Pead PR - who’ll say anything we want them to for a shit load of tacos.
Thank you from the bottom of our spicy hearts.
Risks and challenges
There is a potential risk that once you try a Lucky Taco you will never be able to look at another taco the same again. They will pale in comparison. We challenge you to find a better taco.
But seriously though. We’re breaking new ground with our Lucky Taco kits. They contain fresh ingredients, with NO preservatives or weird numbers. Our salsas are made fresh, not cooked, so they needed rigorous testing to meet NZ food safety standards. We’ve tested our tortillas, each marinade and salsas for food safety and a 30 day refrigerated shelf life. Yeah, that’s right. Our taco kits need to be kept refrigerated. They aren’t meant to sit in your pantry for 6 months gathering dust.
