Hi there! Lucky Pocket Press is an artist collective and risograph press that strives to tell stories through comics and merchandise from artists with a strong and unique point of view. We want to be a platform for artists to tell their stories through handmade merchandise, apparel, comics, toys, and more. We promote collaboration and accessibility, and are focused on ethical creation of our products, which we print ourselves. With your help, we are trying to purchase a risograph printer!
For a look at what kind of work we'll be hoping to make, take a look at Dear Basil- our first publication by co-founders Steph Bulante and Sara Hagstrom, released in May, 2019. It is a 42 page, 3 color risographed comic and field guide. Each book was hand bound and printed by ourselves. Along with the book, we also made these hand-cast little figures of spirits from the story.
Our main focus is the creation of products that combine novel ideas and unique merchandising. We want to work with artists who don't necessarily have access to a risograph or other printmaking methods, and make their stories accessible to audiences by keeping costs low. Most importantly, we want to tell stories that feels lucky, warm, and like home.
A risograph printer is duplicator machine that produces bright and rich colors through soy-based inks. It is often described as a marriage between a xerox copy machine and the silkscreen printing method, as it prints one layer at a time, and can affordably and quickly make thousands of copies. Risographs are also known for producing prints that feel tactile and handmade! By printing large volumes and using soy based inks, risograph machines minimize waste and can reach greater numbers of people.
We are trying to buy a dual drum risograph, as well as at least 6 drums in order to offer a sufficient amount of flexibility to our collaborators. Dual-drum duplicators print two layers at a time for more precise registration and can print up to 11 x 17. Really cool!
Lucky Pocket Press is run by two small bugs, Sara Hagstrom and Steph Bulante. We began this project in an effort to create an independent publishing press that tells stories through not only comics, but apparel, accessories, and other unconventional objects through the least amount of outsourcing as possible, making most of our items in house. Currently, we are both freelance artists based in Baltimore, MD, and Los Angeles, CA. We have a bunch of really exciting stuff in the works with a ton of really cool artists and would love your support to make these projects a reality!
We have a lot of cool stuff to offer you for helpin' us out! Here's a breakdown of what rewards we have for your pledge:
First, we're offering this really cute red-plated soft enamel pin of our mascot, Pocket! It is 1".
We're also making these LPP totes! They are soft cotton with a red handle, and hand printed on both sides.
Next, we've got this sick ringer crewneck design! These custom made crews have red hems and are printed on both sides as well. They're super unique (and super comfy too)!
Lastly, we have these plastic cast Pocket figures for our most generous donors! They are hand sculpted, hand painted, and made with love. They'll stand at approximately 3 inches tall. We have a limited number of these figures, so snatch one up fast!
[EDIT] We’ve added our comic + figure bundle of DEAR BASIL! A 42 page book about Fern, a young boy making a field guide of spirits for his baby sister. You can pledge for the comic alone, or you can get the comic AND figure!
We also have some stretch goals that will be unlocked after our initial funding goal is met!
Our first goal at $16,000 is to turn the enamel pin reward into a blind box- we'll offer 3 total designs of Pocket's many emotions and you'll get one randomly, packaged in a cute box! We want to be able to offer a lot of color options for our risograph, which costs more money, so the more funding we can get, the better!
We hope you're interested in Lucky Pocket Press! Thank you so much for taking the time to take a look at our project. We have so much in store for you all!
Have a lucky day!
Risks and challenges
We hand make most all of our products ourselves, and make sure the quality is outstanding for each product! That being said, we will need a bit of time to print everything and get the rewards to you all. We have a lot of heart and care very deeply about this project, and we hope this comes across!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
