This album has to happen!
We are the Misbehavin’ Maidens, and we’ve had a blast performing live the past two years. But every time we perform, people ask us if we have CDs to sell.
And that’s a problem we’re hoping to remedy with this Kickstarter.
Like dragons (SEXY dragons), we've been carefully hoarding our tips and merch profits to get a CD together. But what we’ve saved isn’t enough, and we need your help to actually make this CD thing happen.
Album and goal details
Our initial goal of $3,000 will allow us to record a 6-song EP from our a cappella repertoire. (And, as of 1/5/15, we've met that goal - thank you so much! You all are amazing!)
Now for our stretch goals!
$5,000 Will allow us to make a full-length, 10-song album with more of our fans' favorite songs!
$7,000 will allow us to make a 12-song album and get more songs on there that we have to pay royalties for (which are among our fans' favorites)!
$10,000 will allow us to make a professional music video, which we will release on YouTube! A professional music video will help us get more gigs at cons, so we can serenade more people with our bawdy ballads!
Why so much?
Because we’re self-producing this album, and we want to do it right - in a good-quality studio, printing good-quality CDs, and paying the royalties for any non-traditional and non-original songs we decide to record. (Many of our crowd’s favorites fall into this category).
All that adds up to about $500 per song, on average.
Quality music videos are expensive to make as well. We want to make sure we get people who know what they're doing to help us out.
Release details, release date, and song list
We hope to release the album in June of 2015.
We will be releasing the CD in physical form, and also in digital form (potentially on Bandcamp, iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, CDBaby, etc. - we are still researching the best options here).
Song list is still TBD. We'll keep you posted (and feel free to vote for your favorite songs in the comments!). The more we raise, the more likely we'll be able to include some of the fan favorites that require royalty payments.
Why we'll succeed
We know we can do it, because we’ve developed a passionate crew of fans from our shows. In the past two years, we’ve performed dozens of shows, including at Piratz Tavern in Silver Spring, Md., The Limerick Pub in Silver Spring, Md., The Weirdo Show in Washington, D.C., as well as John Strongbow’s Tavern in Alexandria, Va. We’ve even gone on the road with the fandom con circuit, performing at ConNooga in Chattanooga, Tenn. and Nauticon in Provincetown, Mass. Our fans want this CD to happen, and we’d love to have it to sell at our dream venue: Dragon Con!
Additionally, three out of the four of us have studio recording experience. Saber Tompson is a founding member of Scales and Crosstones and is featured on both of their albums. Flint Locke is on two albums from Pirates for Sail, and Lucky Annie is on one Pirates for Sail album.
And finally, one of our members has been deep into the local folk scene her whole life and has tons of connections to spread the word, while another one of us has been doing professional marketing for 14 years. We've got the smarts!
Have a listen!
"Twiddles" is the song where we introduce ourselves. It's heavy on the innuendo - probably PG-13 rated.
"Paddy Murphy" is a traditional Irish drinking song. It's relatively work-safe.
"Cathouse Tragedy" is a song by Aurelio Voltaire (and he LOVES our cover). It's REALLY dirty - consider this one rated R.
About the rewards
Online concert invitation
We'll do a 30-minute concert and Q&A session over Google Hangouts! Make sure you've got Google Hangouts set up on your computer in advance. We'll also endeavor to post the concert video online after the fact, so if you aren't able to attend at the time we perform, you'll still get to see it!
Digital copy of the album
We'll send you a DRM-free version of the album. Some reward levels get you this tasty treat a week before anyone else!
Song list still TBD. If you back us, we'll keep you posted on those decisions. (But feel free to comment with your favorite songs from our repertoire so we can take that into account!)
Kiss from the Maidens
Our most adorable reward and an early bird special, we'll send you a postcard with the image below and actual kiss marks from each of us. (We're looking forward to spending an afternoon taking turns kissing bits of cardboard...we'll try and post some video of that!)
Physical copy of the album Just what it sounds like! Some reward levels get you an autographed copy, even!
Cover art is still TBD, but we'll post it here once it's ready.
We've been selling shot glasses for awhile, but this is a brand-new, Kickstarter-exclusive design! (Design subject to change.)
Again, we've been selling t-shirts for awhile, but this will also be a Kickstarter-exclusive design! It will be a black, unisex-fit shirt with red lettering. On the front, it will say "I like lewd lyrical lasses with tight chorals and loose morals," and on the back, it'll feature our logo. (Design subject to change.)
You can specify your size, S-XXL, and we will send out a size chart with our survey, so you can make sure it'll fit!
ALL THE MERCH
The "All the merch" backer rewards include the t-shirt and shot glass, above, plus a button, PLUS a keychain, magnet, earrings and necklace hand-made by our own Lucky Annie (girl is obsessed with Shrinky Dinks, we don't really know what the deal is). Each has a glossy finish.
Birthday video call
You can think of this as our version of "Happy birthday, Mr. President." You (or a friend) will be serenaded via Skype by the Maidens, on or around the birthday in question (we'll do our best to make our schedules work, but sometimes this can be tricky!). We'll sing a song of your choice from our repertoire.
Yes, really. One or more of the Maidens will bake and deliver to you a dozen cookies of a flavor of your choosing (within reason; we reserve the right to negotiate this). If you're stumped for flavors, one of our members makes some pretty killer chocolate chip pecan cookies and M&M and potato chip cookies. We're just sayin'. But we'll work with you on this one.
Please note that this reward is limited to the DC/Baltimore metro region ONLY.
Customized naughty poem by Lucky Annie
Lucky Annie writes some pretty hilarious dirty poems and lyrics, and with this reward level, she'll write one just for you, based on your responses to a short survey sent after the end of the campaign.
Customized D&D 5th Edition character by Flint Locke
Flint loves her some D&D and has a knack for creating some pretty awesome characters. For this reward, she'll work with you to create a character you'll love to play. (Note: This does not include a drawing of the character, since Flint can't draw.)
Personal online mixology course with Rouge
Rouge is a former bartender who still loves whipping up fun and interesting concoctions for parties. (She invented our Mudder's Milk and Sereni-tea for our ConNooga room party, which both got rave reviews!) If you're stumped on how to mix a good cocktail, Rouge can help you. She'll do a one-on-one Skype call with you to demonstrate the basics and show you how to make a couple of classic cocktails.
Please note that this reward is limited to backers who are 21+ ONLY.
Want to brainstorm or pick Saber's brain about starting a band, modeling, or even sex toys (she sells them for her day job)? This reward gets you a 30-minute Skype call to talk about it.
Note you must be 18+ if you want to talk about sex toys.
If you love us so much you're willing to throw $500 our way, we will come to you and perform a 90-minute concert for you and up to 9 friends. We'll try and make this happen sometime during 2015, but it may have to be pushed to 2016, depending on schedules.
Please note this reward is limited to people within a 3-hour driving distance from Silver Spring, Maryland ONLY.

Risks and challenges
We're committed to making an album of superior audio quality, and that means working with a professional studio. Three of us have recorded CDs before, but we're planning to record at a studio none of us have worked with before: one that specializes in capturing a cappella groups. Though working with someone new always has its risks, we're confident that the studio we select will give our album the treatment it deserves.
All our fans have favorite songs, but it's possible we won't be able to include everybody's favorites, partly due to the limits of our time to record as many songs as we'd like, and partly due to the cost to get the rights to songs owned by other groups. Sometimes, artists will flat-out refuse to let certain types of groups record their music, so we will need to be flexible with regards to our track list, and make sure to get those details sorted before we spend time and money in the studio. That's why we don't have a track listing up now, but stay tuned!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
