What is Empires of Sorcery?

Empires of Sorcery is essentially a spiritual successor to the MicroProse game "Master of Magic." Many of you will be familiar with that game and already have a pretty good idea what we're talking about. Others less fortunate may never have heard of it, and comparisons to that game will mean nothing, so let's just talk about exactly what we're doing:

  • A turn-based 4X strategy game: Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate (Davros would be proud). Pretty much a gamer's bread and butter.
  • A unique yet familiar fantasy world: Elves, dwarves and other fantastic races working alongside (or against) humans in a campaign of diplomacy and/or domination. Fantastic creatures in the roles of enemy, slave, or even potential ally. Parallel planes of existence, separate but subtly interdependent.
  • An intricate system of magic: Spells from several distinct but overlapping schools, acquired through research or conquest. Spell effects range from simple combat damage, to summoning monsters and binding them to your will, to literally changing the face of the planet.
  • City management that matters (but not too much): Expand your empire by building or conquering towns. You can rise to supremacy by wiping out other races, or incorporate the strengths of conquered peoples into your growing empire. You don't have to master every aspect of city management to implement a successful strategy, but you can't completely neglect it, either.
  • Tactical combat puts your strategy to the test: Home-grown military units fight for your cause alongside summoned creatures, all supported by your sorcerous abilities. Build your armies, choose where and when to fight, and may the best emperor win!

OK, great, but those are things almost any game can offer. What makes Empires of Sorcery unique?

  • Powered by d20 OGL. A role-playing system with many years of success behind it, with roots in the familiar Dungeons & Dragons system. Almost endless variety, but balanced by a play-tested rule set which ensures there is no "master race" or "single best unit in the game."
  • Undead as a playable race. This is what the world has been waiting for. Yes, a few games have already tried it, but we feel their implementations have been lacking something. We intend to go to the greatest lengths to make the Undead Experience fit seamlessly into the world we're creating and provide something unique, compelling, and most of all, FUN!
  • Speaking of fun, that's what so many of these games are missing. We are trying to make a game we would want to play, and we hope you want to play it too. To that end, we will strive to provide enough complexity to challenge experienced 4X gamers while still keeping it simple enough for the casual gamer to jump in and enjoy.

We are currently developing Empires of Sorcery for PC, but hopefully we will be able to develop versions for Mac and other platforms as time goes on.

For more information about the game itself, please visit our site at: http://www.empiresofsorcerygame.com/

Hasn't this been done already?

Well, no, not really. Several games in the past (some quite recently) seemed likely candidates to take up the legacy left by “Master of Magic”. However, we feel that none of them managed to fill the void in the genre. “Master of Magic” has never had a true spiritual successor. That is what we're trying to produce. We want to give the world the next step in this unique genre's evolution. We feel that, up to this point, that has never been accomplished.

Why do you need my help?

Good question. We are a small team, and frankly this is a large project. One of us is working around the corners of his full-time gig and dedicating all of what the uninitiated might call his "free time" to the project, while the other is living on savings and working for free in order to make this happen. That's how much we care about getting this game off the ground, and we're going to keep at it. But dedication and goodwill only take a person so far. At the end of the day we have to do something to keep the lights (or more importantly the computers) on, and the energy drinks and ramen noodles flowing.

Even more importantly, we just can't do it all ourselves. A successful video game requires a great deal of artwork that is simply beyond our creative capability. Every map requires tiles to represent what exists where, as well as the land itself. Every city requires images to represent its buildings and armies. Every combat unit, from the lowliest peasant with a pitchfork to the mightiest of dragons, requires a whole series of sprites to indicate moving and fighting. Every user interface... well, honestly, we can make it completely functional without any added graphics at all, but we think it would look nicer if we could make it... look... nicer. And unless you want to sit in silence while you play, you're going to want some kind of background score, event music, and sound effects. We are working with some very talented artists, and they are worth much more than we can afford to pay them, but even at cut rates these things cost time and money, so that is where the vast majority of your pledge will be going.

As much as we would like to say that we'll finish the game no matter what, we just can't. We need your backing to pay for the things we can't do ourselves, and we are at our limit for self-funding. Frankly, Empires of Sorcery will not become reality without your help.

What happens after you meet or exceed your funding?

The real goal of the Empires of Sorcery project is not to raise the money, but to make the best game we possibly can. The initial funding goal ensures that we can complete the game in its most elementary form, but falls far short of our ultimate vision. We have some specific stretch goals in mind, and we will be talking more about them as we approach each level, but here is a general idea of what we'll be doing with any funds raised above the $25,000 mark: designing a nice boxed edition of the game for those of us who like that sort of thing; adding more playable races; adding more custom artwork and music to areas that may get simplistic treatment in the first pass; porting to other platforms including Mac and mobile devices; and, of course, incorporating your feedback into the game. We want to make the game YOU want to play.

After the Kickstarter campaign ends, we'll have the resources to push development into hyperdrive. We still have a long way to go, but in between implementing and distributing the rewards for our awesome, generous, super-cool backers, we will be working overtime to get Empires of Sorcery finished and ready to meet the world.

And that's just the beginning. We've got big plans for adding new content in a series of expansions, and we will of course continue asking for your feedback and doing all we can to make this a gaming experience like no other.

Why Kickstarter?

We are a small, independent development company, and we are committed to bringing our customers the very best. We may not always be small, but we will always be independent, and we see the gaming community of the future thriving on the creative independence that the Kickstarter program provides. No artificial deadlines forcing us to push unfinished product out the door. No watering down your gaming experience for the sake of mass appeal. Just pure, honest collaboration between gamers and game developers.

We believe strongly in the idea of independent, community-driven development, not only for what it can do for us but what it can do for you. That's why we're backing projects we believe in, investing in ideas we want to see brought to life. We hope you'll help us get Empires of Sorcery off the ground, of course, but we also hope you'll find other projects to become a part of. This is what community is all about.

I love this project for its own merit, obviously, but... What's in it for me?

We are offering a large number or reward tiers so that you can choose to pledge at whatever level feels comfortable for you, and we think we're putting some things out there that you can get excited about. We hope so, anyway!

Many of these rewards offer a greater or lesser input into the game, from naming a city to designing your own custom race. Please keep in mind that we can't let you put just anything you want in there. Primarily, we want to keep the game family-friendly, so no profanity, nudity, etc. Any kind of offensive content is right out. Also we want to maintain a certain creative and artistic style, so things will need to be worked out to fit in with the game overall. Of course the "Easter egg" reward will have a bit more latitude in that aspect: you can make something happen that obviously isn't part of the game proper. In short, your input will be collaborative in nature and subject to editorial review, at our discretion.

But that's not your only chance to get your ideas into the game. Every backer will have access to our development forums, where you can tell us about what we can do to make the game better, from core content to user interface. We need your input to make Empires of Sorcery the best game it can possibly be!

Please feel free to contact us about any questions you may have about any of our rewards before committing yourself to a pledge.
